John RESTALL (1766-1854)

and Ann ALDRIDGE (1768-1840)

 

John Restall and Ann Aldridge married by banns on 30 September 1788 in Harting, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Harting.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Vollar and Ann Voller.

John Rustell was baptised on 8 July 1766 in Harting.  He was the son of Thomas Restall and Sarah Wheeler.  He died aged 90 years and was buried on 13 July 1854 in Harting.  The burial register noted that the was from Champs in Harting.  The 1841 census records that 74 year old John was a gamekeeper living in Harting.  Also in his household on census night was the family of his daughter Sarah.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was living with his daughter Sarah and her husband at Champs.  John was then said to be 84 years old, deaf and a late game keeper.

Ann Aldridge was baptised on 26 December 1768 in Harting.  She was the daughter of William Aldridge and Anne Long.  She may have died aged 73 years and have been buried on 2 October 1840 in Harting.  The burial register noted that she was from New Woods.

 

John Restall and Ann Aldridge had 10 or 11 known children:

  1. Ann Restall was baptised on 1 February 1789 in Harting.

  2. William Restall was baptised on 20 September 1790 in Harting and buried there on 21 February 1792.

  3. Fanny Resthall was baptised on 8 April 1794 in Harting.

  4. Frances Resthall was baptised on 29 September 1796 in Harting.

  5. John Restall was baptised on 16 December 1797 in Harting.  He died aged  25 years and was buried on 9 November 1822 in Harting.  The burial register noted that he was the son of John and Ann from Hambledon, Hampshire.

    John may have married Maria.

    John and Maria had the following child:

    1. John Restall was baptised on 31 March 1822 in Harting.  The baptism register noted that his father was a stone mason from West Harting.

  6. Anthony Restall was baptised on 20 May 1800 in Harting.  He died aged 40 years in the Chichester Infirmary and was buried on 19 December 1840 in Harting.

  7. George Restall may have been part of this family.  He was born about 1803 in Harting.

    George married Jane Wells by banns on 13 June 1828 in Harting, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Harting.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Pink and Mary Mittin.

    8. Jane was born about 1807/8 in Petersfield, Hampshire.  She died aged 47 years in West Harting and was buried on 12 December 1854 in Harting.

    The 1851 census records that the couple and 3 children were living at Nye Woods in Harting.  George was then a 48 year  old agricultural labourer and Jane was 43.

    Geroge and Jane had 6 known children:

    1. Ann Restall was baptised on 19 October 1831 in Harting, at which time her father was a labourer from West Harting.

    2. Harriot Restall was baptised on 13 March 1834 in Harting, at which time her father was a labourer from West Harting.

    3. Emily Restall was baptised on 12 June 1836 in Harting, at which time her father was a labourer from West Harting.  In 1851 she was 14 years old an living with her parents.

    4. George Restall was baptised on 7 August 1838 in Harting, at which time his father was a labourer from West Harting.  He was 12 years old in 1851.

    5. Alfred Restall was baptised on 20 June 1841 in Harting, at which time his father was a labourer from West Harting.  He died aged 9 years and was buried on 19 September 1848 in Harting.  The burial register noted that he was from Havant, Hampshire.

    6. William Restall was born about 1849 in Bedhampton, Hampshire.  He was 2 years old at the time of the 1851 census.

  8. James Restall was buried on 3 August 1805 in Harting.  His baptism doesn't seem to have been recorded in the Harting baptism register.

  9. Sarah Restall was born about 1807 in Harting.

    Sarah married Thomas Ellison by banns on 11 July 1824 in Harting.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Harting.  The witnesses to their marriage were George Restall and Charlotte Ellison.

    In 1841 the couple were living in Harting with her father.  Thomas was then a 35 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 35.  Also with them was 16 year old Sarah Ellison.  When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living at Champs in Harting along with Sarah's widower father.  Thomas was then a 45 year old farmer and Sarah was 44.

  10. Charles Restall was buried on 1 May 1809 in Harting.  His baptism doesn't seem to have been recorded in the Harting baptism register.

  11. James Restall was buried on 24 April 1811 in Harting.  His baptism doesn't seem to have been recorded in the Harting baptism register.
