The
RESTALL Family of Sussex

I don't know if I
have a Restall ancestor.
My 3x Great
Grandmother, Sarah
Baxter, married
John Restall
in 1833 in Bepton, Sussex. By 1845 she had settled down with
George Goble.
Her son Edmund born about 1841 was my 2x Great
Grandfather, but who was his father? According to the 1851 census he
was the son of George and Sarah, but I haven't found a birth certificate nor
a baptism for him. His younger brother James was born in 1843 and his
birth certificate records his name as James Restall son of
John Restall a horse dealer and Sarah
formerly Baxter. However, when James was baptised
only his mother's name was recorded in the baptism register. Both
Edmund and James took the surname Goble.
The 1841 census
records that there was a 30 year old John Restall residing
in the Easebourne workhouse, but Sarah was not there with him, nor have I
found her or her son Edmund in the 1841 census. George was then most
probably a 35
year old seaman living in Portsmouth.
Sarah's John was
most probably baptised as John Restall Aylwin in 1807 in
Treyford cum Didling, Sussex, the son of
Elizabeth
Aylwin (1785-1865). He died in 1845 at the Easebourne
workhouse. Might his father have been
John Restall
(1779-1852)? He was the father of another
John
Restall born in 1812 in Trotton, Sussex, who in 1848 he was described as a horse dealer.
