Family History is my hobby.  I am not a professional genealogist.

John REEVE (1671-1748)

and Ann GARDINER (c1675-1727)

John Reve and Ann Gardiner were my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 23 April 1696 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.

John Reeve was baptised on 17 October 1671 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, as John Reaue.  He was the son of William Reeve (c1635-1690) and most probably Sarah Geale (1637-1713).  John died aged 77 years and was buried on 24 June 1748 in West Grinstead, Sussex.

Ann Gardiner's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 26 July 1727 in West Grinstead.  (The date of her burial comes from a transcript of the West Grinstead registers which state that Ann was the daughter of John.  However, the original register has been checked and that records that she was the wife of John, although the exact date could not be read - thanks to Kevin Reeves for this data.)

John Reeve and Ann Gardiner had 8 known children:

  1. John Reeve was baptised on 7 July 1697 in West Grinstead.

As Jonathan Reeve of West Grinstead he married Elizabeth Tester of Edburton on 18 October 1722 in Newtimber.

Elizabeth was baptised on 31 August 1701 in Edburton and was the daughter of John Tester and Elizabeth Wares.

John and Elizabeth had the following son:

    1. John Reeves was baptised on 5 September 1725 in West Grinstead.

  2. Mary Reeve, my 7x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 23 April 1699 in West Grinstead.  She married Daniel Beck in 1723.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Hester Reeve was baptised on 1 June 1701 in West Grinstead.

  4. Elias Reeve was baptised on 26 September 1703 in West Grinstead.

  5. Ann Reeves was baptised on 30 November 1705 in West Grinstead.  She or her mother may have been buried there on 26 July 1727.  Or, Ann may have married John Newman on 7 May 1728 in Nuthurst, Sussex.

  6. William Reeves was baptised on 6 March 1708/9 in West Grinstead and buried there on 21 December 1709.

  7. Thomas Reeves was baptised on 30 November 1710 in West Grinstead and buried there on 1 June 1732.

  8. Elizabeth Reeves was baptised on  25 October 1716 in West Grinstead.  She may have married William Goldsmith on 17 May 1738 in West Grinstead, at which time they were both of West Grinstead.  (This marriage appears in the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index but not in a transcript of the West Grinstead marriage register.).  However, an Elizabeth Reeves daughter of John was buried in West Grinstead on 13 February 1732/3.

Hester Reeve, widow was buried on 28 September 1703 in West Grinstead.

Elizabeth Reeves, wife of John was buried on 13 February 1732/3 in West Grinstead.  John moved to Cowfold in 1734, which is recorded in a settlement certificate.

William Reeves was buried on 4 November 1735 in West Grinstead.

Many thanks to Kevin Reeves for identifying the marriage of John and Ann, and for additional data about the above family.
