William QUAIT (c1725-1797)

and Ann MILLS (1733-1776)

William Quait and Ann Mills married on 4 May 1752 in Horsham, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Quait may have been baptised on 3 February 1729 at St. James in Clerkenwell, London, the son of George Quait and Mary, or on 10 March 1732 in Ash, Surrey, the son of William Quait and Ann Harwood.  (One of them married Elizabeth Woodford on 3 March 1754 at St. Botolph's, Bishopgate, London.)  William may have been buried on 1 January 1797 in Horsham, as per the IGI non-conformist records.

Ann Mills may have been buried on 31 December 1776 in Warnham, Sussex.  She may have been baptised on 22 February 1732/3 in Horsham, the daughter of Edman Mills (?-1735) and Ann Willougby.  But there was another Ann Mills baptised 20 November 1727 in Horsham, the daughter of John Mills and Ann Pryer.  Given that Ann's last known child was born in 1773, I think it more likely she was born 1733.  After Edman Mills death his widow Ann may have married George Quait.

On 27 December 1757 in Horsham, William was a witness to the marriage of Benjamin Perry a husbandman from Oxted, Surrey and Mary Mills.  The other witness was Jane Hunt.

William Quait and Ann Mills had 12 known children:

1. John Quait was baptised on 7 June 1752 in Horsham.

2. Sarah Quait was baptised on 29 July 1753 in Horsham.  She may have been buried there on 26 August 1753, but the burial register noted that she was a child and there was another Sarah Quait who was baptised in Horsham in 1741.

3. Hannah Quait was baptised on 27 July 1755 in Horsham.

4. William Quait was baptised on 22 August 1756 in Horsham.  He married Hannah Emery in 1784.  (They have their own page.)

5. Edmund Quait was baptised on 17 February 1759 in Horsham.

   Edmund may have married Sarah Baker by licence on 7 May 1786 at St. Botolphs Bishopgate, London.  He was a bachelor of Storrington and she a spinster of St. Botolphs.

6. John Quait was baptised on 14 December 1760 in Horsham.

7. Mary Quait was baptised on 4 November 1764 in Horsham.  She died as an infant and was buried on 14 April 1765 in Horsham.

8. George Quait was baptised on 7 May 1766 in Horsham.  He married Mary Briggs in 1797.  (They have their own page.)

9. Benjamin Quait was baptised on 8 November 1767 in Horsham.  He died as an infant and was buried on 13 December 1767 in Horsham.

10. Mary Quait was baptised on 25 December 1768 in Horsham.

11. Benjamin Quait was baptised on 30 December 1770 in Horsham.

12. Sarah Quait was baptised on 14 March 1773 in Horsham.
