George QUAIT (1766-1838)

and Mary BRIGGS (c1775-?)

 

George Quait and Mary Briggs married on 10 August 1796 at St. Luke's in Chelsea, London.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

George Quait was baptised on 7 May 1766 in Horsham, Sussex.  He was the son of William Quait and Ann Mills (1733-?).  George died aged 72 years in Storrington and was buried on 10 July 1838 in Sullington.

Mary's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

 

George Quait and Mary Briggs had 6 known children and possibly more:

  1. George Quait was baptised on 13 August 1797 in Horsham.

  2. Mary Quait was baptised on 20 January 1799 in Horsham.

  3. William Quait may have been part of this family.  He was born about 1801 in Charlwood, Surrey.

    William married Charlotte Booty on 13 November 1824 in Horley, Surrey.

    Charlotte was born about 1805 in Charlwood.

    In 1841 the couple and 4 children were living in Reigate Heath Mill, Reigate.  They were both said to be 40 years old and William was a miller.

    The 1851 census records the couple were living in Reigate Foreign.  William was a 50 year old miller and Charlotte was 46.  They both gave their place of birth as Charlwood, Surrey.  Four of their children were with them on census night along with unmarried 21 year old lodger Charlotte Luck.

    William and Charlotte had the following children:

    1. George Quait was baptised on 16 October 1825 in Horley.

    2. William Quaite was baptised on 30 September 1827 in Buckland, Surrey.

    3. Ann Quaite was baptised on 13 September 1829 in Buckland.  She was 12 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was an unmarried 21 year old and living at home.

    4. Emma Quait was born about 1831 in Surrey.  She was 10 years old in 1841.

    5. Henry Quait was was baptised on 26 November 1837 in Reigate.  He was 6 years old in 1841.

    6. Charles Quait was baptised on 24 November 1839 in Reigate.  At the time of the 1841 census he was 3 years old.  The 1851 census records he was 11 years old.

    7. Edmund Quait was baptised on 15 May 1842 in Reigate.

    8. Alfred Quait was born about 1846 in Reigate.  He was 5 years old in 1851.

    9. Robert Quait was baptised on 14 May 1848 in Reigate.  He was 2 years old in 1851.

  4. Edmund Quait was born on 3 January 1803 and baptised on 23 January 1803 in East Molesey.  He married Mary Ann Wagstaff in 1822.  (They have their own page.)

  5. John Quait was born on 3 January 1803 and baptised on 23 January 1803 in East Molesey.

    John married Sarah Evershed by banns on 15 December 1827 in East Grinstead, Sussex.  He was a bachelor of Reigate and she a spinster of East Grinstead.

    In 1841 the couple and 3 children were living in Dorking, Surrey.  John was a 38 year old miller and Sarah was 45.  All bar Sarah were born in Surrey.

    The 1851 census records the couple and daughter Mary were living at Milton Court Mill in Dorking.  John was a 49 year old miller and gave his place of birth as Molesey.  Sarah was 52 and said she was born in East Grinstead.

    John and Sarah had the following children:

    1. George Quait was baptised on 29 January 1832 in Dorking.  He was 10 years old in 1841.

    2. John Quait was baptised on 8 September 1833 in Dorking.  He was 8 years old in 1841.

    3. William Quait was baptised on 15 November 1835 in Dorking.

    4. Mary Quait was was baptised on 21 October 1838 in Dorking.  She was 2 years old when the 1841 census was recorded.  In 1851 she was 12 years old.

  6. Friend Quait was baptised on 3 January 1806 in East Molesey.

  7. Hannah Quait was baptised on 6 March 1808 in East Molesey.

  8. Mary Quait may have been part of this family.  She was baptised on 13 April 1817 in Cranbrook, Kent.
