Richard PURVEY
(1596-1640)
and Margaret NEWNAME (?-?)

Richard Purvie
and Margaret
Newname were my 9x Great Grandparents twice over. (Click
here to see their
place in my pedigree chart.) They married on 25 May 1624 at the parish church of Holy Trinity in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.
Richard Purvey was baptised on 22 August 1596 in Lindfield,
Sussex.
He was the son of John Purvey
(c1550-1605). His mother was buried as a widow in Lindfield in 1632.
I have not found his parent's marriage nor was his mother's name recorded
against the baptisms of her 10 children. Richard
was buried on 5 March 1639/40 in Clayton, Sussex.
Lindfield to Hurstpierpoint is about 10 miles and the parishes are separated
by Cuckfield to the north of Hurstpierpoint and west of Lindfield. To
the east of Hurstpierpoint and south of Lindfield are the parishes of
Clayton, Keymer and Wivelsfield.
Margaret Newham may have been baptised on 17 April 1597 in Lindfield
and have been the
daughter of John Newnam,
of Plumarden and Mary Nutley.
Or she may have been baptised on 22 November 1601 in Lindfield, the
daughter of Thomas Newnam of Godyngwecke and Denise
Pilbeame. The other Margaret Newnam married
John Vinall on 3 August 1623 in Chailey.
Richard Purvey and Margaret Newname
had 6 known children:
-
Richard Purvey was baptised on 20 January 1624/5 in
Hurstpierpoint and probably died as an infant.
-
A daughter was buried on 21 January 1624/5 in Hurstpierpoint.
-
Richard Purvey was baptised on 30 July 1626 in
Hurstpierpoint.
-
Robert Purvey,
my 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 1 March 1628/9 in
Hurstpierpoint. He married Ann sometime before or
about 1664 possibly Ann
Streeter. (They have their own page.)
-
Damaris Purney was baptised on 16 June 1632 in Clayton.
-
A daughter was baptised on 28 May 1637 in Clayton, Sussex. Might she
have been Margaret Purvey who was buried on 21 December
1639 in Clayton. The burial register noted that she was the
daughter of Richard Purvey.
