Henry PURVEY (1665-1711)

and Bridget SHERLEY (1668-1745)

Henry Purvey and Bridget Sherley were my 7x Great Grandparents, 3x over, via 3 of their daughters.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart via Elizabeth, here for Sarah and here for Bridget.)  They married on 28 April 1691 at the parish church of St. Giles in Shermanbury, Sussex.

Henry Purvey was baptised on 16 May 1665 in Slaugham, Sussex.  He was the son of Robert Purvey (1629-1680) and Anne (possibly Ann Streeter).  He was buried on 14 May 1711 in Bolney, Sussex.  A burial took place 3 weeks before he died and the next was more than 2 months after, so no evidence of widespread illness in the village.  As Henry was only about 46 years old when he died, did he have an accident or was he ill?

Bridget Sherley was baptised on 4 October 1668 in Bolney, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Edward Sherly (1620-1681) and Alice Curtis (1629-?), although at her baptism her mother's name was recorded as Ealce.  She was buried on 19 February 1744/5 in Bolney, making her about 75 when she died.

How did Bridget cope after Henry's death?  She was left with 6 children aged between 17 and 2.  Did Henry leave sufficient money and/or property or the lease of a house and land?  Or were Bridget and her children taken in by relatives?  Her eldest son was about 16 years old when his father died, so did he help to support his mother, sisters and younger brother?  Of Bridget's 6 children who survived to adulthood, only her eldest daughter remained in Bolney.

Henry Purvey and Bridget Sherley had 8 known children:

  1. Henry Purvey was baptised on 6 March 1691/2 in Bolney and buried there on 10 March 1691/2 as Henry Purvie.

  2. Mary Purvey was baptised on 9 August 1693 in Bolney.  Mary married Richard Moore in 1713.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Richard Purvey was baptised on 14 January 1694/5 in Bolney.

Richard married Ann Borgery on 18 November 1725 in Slaugham.  At the time he was of Thakeham and she of Slaugham.

Ann was baptised on 19 January 1695/6 in Slaugham and was the daughter of John Borgrey and Ann.  As Ann wife of Richard Purvey she was buried on 31 March 1731 in Slaugham.

Richard and Ann had 2 known children:

    1. John Purvey was baptised on 4 April 1727 in Slaugham.  He died aged 90 years in Bolney and was buried on 10 April 1816 in Nuthurst.

John married Mary in about 1750 possibly in or near Nuthurst.

Mary wife of John Purvey was buried on 19 October 1794 in Nuthurst.  Another Mary wife of John Purvey died in Bolney and was buried on 30 November 1798.  Yet another Mary Purvey died in Bolney and was buried on 4 March 1800 in Nuthurst.

  6. Robart Purve was baptised on 5 November 1701 in Bolney.  He or his son was buried as Robert Purvey on 7 March 1786 in Keymer.

As Robert Purvey he married Ann Potter by licence on 9 June 1723 in East Grinstead, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued the day before by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which recorded that he was then a husbandman of Horsted Keynes and she a spinster.

As Robert Purry he married for a second time to Mary Tuppen on 21 September 1730 in Beddingham, Sussex.  He was then said to be of Keymer and she of Beddingham.
