James PUNNETT (1684-1775)

and Mary BARNES (1690-?)

 

James Pennett and Mary Barnes were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 19 January 1711/2 at the parish church in Peasmarsh, Sussex.  They settled in Hooe, Sussex.  (Note, James married as Pennett, but his children were baptised as Punnett.)

James Poinett was baptised on 6 December 1684 in Hooe.  He was the son of Thomas Punnett (c1650-1721) and Martha Crackbone (1655-1709).  He may have died in Hooe in 1775.

Mary Barnes may have been baptised on 5 February 1689/90 in Hollington, Sussex, the daughter of John Barns (c1660-1717) and Ann Neeves (c1660-1706).  But there was another Mary Barns baptised on 8 September 1687 in Hollington, the daughter of Michael Barns (1664-1709) and Elizabeth Taylor (c1665-1706).  I think the elder Mary married John Delvey in 1709 and then Thomas Stoneham in 1727.

 

James Punnett and Mary Barnes had 6 known children:

  1. James Punnett was baptised on 9 January 1714/5 in Hooe, Sussex.  He died in Punnett's Town, Sussex in 1796.

    As James Punnet a carpenter of Heathfield, he married Ann Cooper daughter of H. Cooper on 11 September 1738 in Heathfield, Sussex.

    Ann was buried on 10 January 1746 in Heathfield.

    James and Ann had 5 known children:

    1. James Punnett was baptised on 25 January 1739 in Hailsham.

      James married Mary Hicks on 3 May 1763 in Burwash, Sussex.  He was then of Catsfield, Sussex.

      Mary was buried on 27 November 1786 in Heathfield.

      James and Mary had 2 known children:

      1. James Punnett was baptised on 4 August 1764 in Burwash.

      2. Sarah Punnett was baptised on 17 January 1766 in Burwash.

    2. Ann Punnett was baptised on 15 March 1740 in Punnett's Town and buried there on 9 June 1741.

    3. William Punnett was baptised on 14 August 1743 in Punnett's Town.

    4. Mary Punnett was baptised on1 July 1744 in Punnett's Town.  She was buried there on 9 July 1827.  Mary married William Kemp on 5 July 1764 in Heathfield.

    5. Hannah Punnett was baptised on 29 December 1745 in Punnett's Town.

      Hannah married William Hicks on 29 June 1767 in Burwash.

      William and Hannah had 2 known children:

      1. Hannah Hicks was baptised on 16 September 1773 in Burwash.

      2. Mary Hicks was baptised on 10 March 1776 in Burwash.

    After Ann's death, James married Elizabeth Cooper on 29 September 1747 in Heathfield.

    Elizabeth was buried on 8 June 1799 in Heathfield.

    James and Elizabeth had 1 known son:

    1. Samuel Punnett was born in about 1747.  He died in 1803 in Hailsham.

      Samuel married Ann Willard by licence on 13 November 1767 in Chiddingly, Sussex.  He was then of Heathfield and she of Chiddingly.

      Ann died in 1769.

      Samuel and Ann had 1 known daughter:

      1. Ann Punnett was born in 1768 in Punnetts Town.  Ann married Hezekiah Axsell by banns on 21 April 1800 in Mayfield, Sussex.  They were both then of Mayfield.

      Samuel married again to Mary Luck on 19 October 1769 in Heathfield.

      Mary was baptised on 20 December 1748 in Heathfield.  She was buried there on 6 February 1782.

      Samuel and Mary had the following children:

      1. Samuel Punnett was born in 1770 and died the following year.

      2. Elizabeth Punnett was baptised on 5 April 1772 in Punnett's Town.  She married Thomas Cole on 13 May 1787 in Iden, Sussex.  She was then of that parish and he of Stone in Kent.

      3. Mary Punnett was born in Punnett's Town in 1773 and buried on 14 June 1774 in Hooe.

      4. Leah Punnett was born in Punnett's Town in 1774 and buried on 10 June 1777 in Hooe.

      5. James Punnett was baptised on 1 September 1775 in Punnett's Town.

      6. Philadelphia Punnett was baptised on 6 February 1782 in Punnett's Town.

      Samuel married for a third time to Mary Head on 11 February 1784 in Heathfield.  Mary was then said to be the widow of Henry Head whom she had married as Mary Starr on 18 November 1771 in Heathfield.

      Mary was buried in Heathfield on 28 May 1797.

      Samuel and Mary had 1 known son:

      1. Samuel Punnett was born in 1785 in Punnett's Town.  He died there on 11 November 1866.  Samuel married Elizabeth Luck by banns on 11 October 1804 in Heathfield.

  2. Elizabeth Punnett was baptised on 10 March 1716/7 in Hooe, Sussex.

  3. Mary Punnett was baptised on 5 April 1719 in Hooe.  She died in 1799.

    Mary married John Miller on 30 March 1743 in Hooe.

    John was born in 1717

    John and Mary had the following known children:

    1. Mary Miller was baptised on 30 March 1746 in Hooe.

    2. Sarah Miller was baptised on 15 November 1747 in Hooe.

    3. Ann Miller was baptised on 10 September 1749 in Hooe.

    4. James Miller was baptised on 6 May 1751 in Hooe.

    5. John Miller was baptised on 22 September 1751 in Hooe.

    6. Elizabeth Miller was baptised on 29 August 1756 in Hooe.  She was buried on 26 December 1832 in Brede, Sussex.

      Elizabeth married Nathaniel Crouch on on 28 December 1782 in Ninfield, Sussex.

      Nathaniel was baptised on 4 May 1755 in Ninfield and was the son of Nathaniel Crouch and Elizabeth.

      Nathaniel and Elizabeth had the following children:

      1. Mary Crouch was baptised on 3 August 1783 in Hooe.

      2. William Crouch was baptised on 28 November 1784 in Hooe.

      3. Nathaniel Crouch was baptised on 10 September 1786 in Hooe.

      4. Elizabeth Crouch was baptised on 11 April 1788 in Brede.

      5. John Crouch was baptised on 6 December 1789 in Brede.

      6. James Crouch was baptised on 16 October 1791 in Brede.  He married Sarah Wait by banns on 16 May 1813 in Catsfield, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and they were both of Catsfield.

      7. Dorcas Crouch was baptised on 4 August 1793 in Brede.

      8. Stephen Crouch was baptised on 31 May 1795 in Brede.  He married Elizabeth Inman by banns on 3 October 1818 in Brede.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brede.

      9. Paul Crouch was baptised on 9 June 1799 in Brede.  He died in 1851.  Paul married Sarah Evans by banns on 9 November 1820 in Brede.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brede.  Sarah was baptised on 9 November 1800 in Brede and was the daughter of Thomas Evans and Sarah Holland.  She died on 29 October 1842 in Brede.

  4. Ann Punnett was baptised on 17 September 1721 in Hooe.

  5. Hannah Punnett was baptised on 9 March 1723/4 in Hooe.  She married John Brett on 3 June 1750 in Bexhill, Sussex.

  6. Sarah Punnett, my 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 20 June 1726 in Hooe.  She married Henry Stoneham in 1751.  (They have their own page.)
