Thomas PUMPHREY
(1804-1882)
and Eliza ROLF (1808-1890)

Thomas Pumphrey and Eliza Rolf married by banns on 30 August
1834 in Hove, Sussex. He was then a bachelor of Portslade and she a
spinster of Hove. (They were not my direct ancestors, but they were
the 3x Great Grandparents of my cousins.)
Thomas Pomfrey was baptised on 22 July 1804 in Willingdon, Sussex.
He was the son of Thomas Pumfrey and Sarah Jenner. (They
had married by banns on 5 April 1799 in Arlington, Sussex, at which time
Thomas was of Willingdon and Sarah of Arlington.) Thomas died aged 77
years on 11 March 1882 at Wish Cottage, Portslade. His death was
registered by his son Thomas and his cause of death was Peritonis and
Exhaustion.
Eliza Rolf was baptised on 3 July 1808 in Hove. She was the
daughter of
Thomas Rolf
(1769-1859) and
Barbara
Lillyott (1770-1858). She died aged 81 years of senile
decay on 19 March 1890 at 7 East Street in Portslade. Her
daughter-in-law, Charlotte Pumfrey, registered Eliza death.
When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living at Wish Cottage in
Portslade. Thomas was then a 37 year old agricultural labourer and
Eliza was 32 years old. Also with them on census night were 17 year
old servant Sophia Kyman and 21 year old Henry Coomber who was
an agricultural labourer. They were living either at or next door to
Wish Cottage in 1851. In 1861 they were at Wish Cottage and Thomas was
then a 55 year old agricultural labourer and Eliza was 52 years old.
The 1871 census records that the family were living at 2 Wish Cottage.
The 1881 census records that the couple were still living at Wish Cottage
along with their son Owen and unmarried 29 year old lodger Charles
Smith.

Rolf had 8 known children:

Thomas Pumfry was baptised on 22 November 1835 in Portslade.
He was 5 years old in 1841. In 1851 he was a 15 year old
agricultural labourer.

George Pumfrey was baptised on 7 May 1837 in Portslade. He
was 4 years old in 1841.

Eliza Pumfry was baptised on 31 May 1840 in Portslade. In
1841 she was a year old. In 1851 she was a 10 year old scholar.
She married
Samuel
Akehurst in 1859. (They have their own page.)

Ellen Pumfry was baptised on 1 January
1843 in Portslade, although her birth was registered in the fourth quarter
of 1842. She was an 8 year old scholar in 1851. In 1861 she
was an 18 year old servant and the eldest of her siblings living at home.
Ellen married Benjamin Newnham on 20 September 1862 in Portslade.
He was then a 24 year old bachelor and labourer, whilst Ellen was a 19
year old spinster. They were both of Portslade. The witnesses
to their marriage were Thomas Akehurst and Eliza Akehurst.
Benjamin was born on 13 May 1838 and baptised on 24 June 1838 in Ringmer,
Sussex. He was the son of Shadrack Newnham and Esther
Sandles.
Benjamin and Ellen had 7 known children:

George Benjamin Newnham was baptised on 28 December 1862 in
Portslade.

Amy Esther Newnham was baptised
on 9 July 1865 in Hove. She married
Elijah Edward Goble
in 1886. (They have their own page.)

Ellen Elizabeth Newnham was born on 21 March 1868 at 43 George
Street, Cliftonville, Hove. She was baptised on 6 September 1868.
She died in 1908.
Ellen married Frank Ernest Guile in 1893.

Bertha Caroline Newnham was baptised on 16 April 1874 in
Portslade.

Henry William John Newnham was born about 1876 in Portslade.
He was mentioned in his sister Alice's will.

Edith Fanny Newnham was born about 1879 in Portslade. She
married Henry James Couzens in 1897. The couple emigrated
to Australia, as noted in her sister Alice's will.

Alice Daisy Newnham was born on 25 February 1886 at 7 East
Street, Portslade. Alice died in about 1951. She left a will
of which probate was granted on 11 January 1952. She married
Frank Ernest Guile, as his second wife, in 1915.

Walter Pumfry was baptised on 28 September 1845 in Portslade.
He was a 5 year old scholar in 1851. In 1861 he was a 15 year old
agricultural labourer.

Mary Ann Pumfry was baptised on 6 August 1848 in Portslade.
In 1851 she was 2 years old. She was a 12 year old scholar in 1861.

Owen Alfred Pumfry was baptised on 14 December 1851 in Portslade.
He was a 9 year old scholar in 1861. In 1871 he was a 19 year old
agricultural labourer and the eldest of his siblings living at home.
He was an unmarried 29 year old agricultural labourer in 1881.

Maria Pumfry was baptised on 14 April 1855 in Portslade. In
1861 she was a 6 year old scholar. She was a 16 year old domestic
servant in 1871.
Maria married George Merritt in 1874.
When the 1881 census was recorded, the couple together with 3 daughters
and a lodger, James Merritt aged 24, were living in Church Road,
Portslade. George was then a 26 year old carter and gave his place
of birth as Lancing, Sussex.
