Thomas PUMPHREY (1804-1882)

and Eliza ROLF (1808-1890)

Thomas Pumphrey and Eliza Rolf married by banns on 30 August 1834 in Hove, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor of Portslade and she a spinster of Hove.  (They were not my direct ancestors, but they were the 3x Great Grandparents of my cousins.)

Thomas Pomfrey was baptised on 22 July 1804 in Willingdon, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Pumfrey and Sarah Jenner.  (They had married by banns on 5 April 1799 in Arlington, Sussex, at which time Thomas was of Willingdon and Sarah of Arlington.)  Thomas died aged 77 years on 11 March 1882 at Wish Cottage, Portslade.  His death was registered by his son Thomas and his cause of death was Peritonis and Exhaustion.

Eliza Rolf was baptised on 3 July 1808 in Hove.  She was the daughter of Thomas Rolf (1769-1859) and Barbara Lillyott (1770-1858).  She died aged 81 years of senile decay on 19 March 1890 at 7 East Street in Portslade.  Her daughter-in-law, Charlotte Pumfrey, registered Eliza death.

When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living at Wish Cottage in Portslade.  Thomas was then a 37 year old agricultural labourer and Eliza was 32 years old.  Also with them on census night were 17 year old servant Sophia Kyman and 21 year old Henry Coomber who was an agricultural labourer.  They were living either at or next door to Wish Cottage in 1851.  In 1861 they were at Wish Cottage and Thomas was then a 55 year old agricultural labourer and Eliza was 52 years old.  The 1871 census records that the family were living at 2 Wish Cottage.  The 1881 census records that the couple were still living at Wish Cottage along with their son Owen and unmarried 29 year old lodger Charles Smith.
