John PRONGER (1788-1839)

and Rebecca RAPLEY (c1793-1853)

John Pronger and Rebecca Rapley married by banns on 17 December 1811 in Shipley, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Ann Wheatland and William Cowdrey.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Pronger was baptised on 13 April 1788 in Horsham, Sussex.  He was the son of John Pronger (1745-1827) and Ann Peters (c1750-?).  John died aged 50 years and was buried on 21 August 1839 in Horsham.

Rebecca Rapley was born about 1793 in Shipley, as per the 1851 census, although I have not found a baptism for her in a transcript of the Shipley registers.  The death of a Rebecca Pronger was recorded in the second quarter of 1853 in the Holborn, Middlesex registration district.

When the 1851 census was recorded, 58 year old Rebecca Pronger was a widow and living in the parish of St. Sepulchre, Saffron Hill, Middlesex.  She was then a parasol maker.  With her on census night was her unmarried 21 year old daughter, Henrietta Pronger who was also a parasol maker.

John Pronger and Rebecca Rapley had 8 known children:

  1. Frances Pronger was baptised on 7 June 1812 in Shipley.  Fanny Pronger died aged 4 years and 6 months and was buried on 11 December 1816 in Horsham.

  2. James Pronger was baptised on 24 July 1814 in Warnham.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

  3. Edmund Pronger was baptised on 20 October 1816 in Horsham.  When the 1841 census was recorded he was most probably living in St. Leonard's village, within the parish of Lower Beeding, with 60 year old Elizabeth Pronger.  He was then a 25 year old sawyer.

  4. Henry Pronger was baptised on 6 June 1819 in Horsham.

  5. John Pronger was baptised on 19 September 1822 in Horsham.  He died aged 31 years and was buried on 13 February 1854 in Horsham.

  6. Aaron Pronger was baptised on 24 September 1826 in Horsham and buried there on 17 October 1827, aged 1 year.

  7. Harriet Pronger was baptised on 21 June 1829 in Horsham.  The 1851 census most probably records her as 21 year old Henrietta Pronger, born in Horsham.

  8. Mary Ann Pronger was baptised on 12 November 1832 in Horsham and buried there on 24 June 1838, aged 5 years.
