John PRONGER (1745-1827)

and Ann PETERS (c1750-?)

John Pronger and Ann Peters married by banns on 12 July 1778 in Horsham, Sussex.  He was then a husbandman from West Grinstead and Ann was a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Elizabeth May and John Stepney.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Pronger was baptised on 5 May 1745 in Nuthurst, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Pronger (1722-1767) and Mary Peters (c1720-1805).  John died aged 82 years and was buried on 21 December 1827 in Nuthurst.

Ann Peter's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might she have been baptised on 1 November 1751 in Cowfold, Sussex the daughter of Edward Peters and Mary Tittle?  An Ann Pronger died aged 77 years and was buried on 9 November 1827 in Nuthurst, therefore, she was born about 1750.  Another Ann Pronger died aged 90 years at Copsale and was buried on 3 October 1838 in Nuthurst, therefore, born about 1748.  However, there was another Ann Pronger, possibly of similar age, who was married to Richard Pronger (1749-1821).

John Pronger and Ann Peters had 5 known children:

  1. Lyddy Pronger was baptised on 20 June 1779 in Nuthurst.

Lydia married William Jenkins by banns on 4 April 1798 in Horsham.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Horsham.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Pronger and Harry Weller.

William and Lydia had the following known children:

    1. Thomas Jenkins was baptised on 10 February 1799 in Horsham.

    2. William Jenkins was baptised on 2 November 1800 in Horsham.

    3. George Jenkins was baptised on 23 May 1802 in Horsham.

    4. John Jenkins was baptised on 2 September 1804 in Horsham.

    5. Charles Jenkins was baptised on 22 June 1806 in Horsham.

    6. Stephen Jenkins was baptised on 28 November 1813 in Horsham.

    7. Edmund Jenkins was baptised on 28 January 1816 in Horsham.

    8. Richard Jenkins was baptised on 26 July 1818 in Horsham.

  2. Mary Pronger was baptised on 12 May 1782 in Cowfold.

  3. Elizabeth Pronger was baptised on 23 May 1784 in Horsham.

Elizabeth married Samuel Mills by licence on 2 September 1801 in Nuthurst.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester on the same day.  It recorded that Samuel was a bachelor and labourer of Nuthurst and Elizabeth was a 17 year old spinster and married with the consent of John Pronger.

Samuel was born about 1778.  He died aged 34 years and was buried on 3 July 1812 in Bolney.

As a widow, Elizabeth Mills, may have married James Barratt by banns on 13 June 1821 in Keymer, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and they were both of Keymer.

Samuel and Elizabeth had the following known children:

    1. Edmund Mills was baptised on 25 October 1801 in Horsham.

    2. William Mills was baptised on 3 April 1803 in Horsham.

    3. James Mills was baptised on 2 February 1806 in Horsham.

    4. Michael Mills was baptised on 12 July 1807 in Bolney.

    5. Sarah Mills was baptised on 17 September 1809 in Bolney.

    6. Richard Mills was baptised on 16 February 1812 in Bolney.

  4. Sarah Pronger was baptised on 3 December 1786 in Horsham.

  5. John Pronger was baptised on 13 April 1788 in Horsham.  He married Rebecca Rapley in 1811.  (They have their own page.)
