James PRONGER (1763-?)
and Elizabeth SIMMONS (1769-?)

James Pronger and Elizabeth Simmons
married by banns on 25 May 1790 in Cuckfield, Sussex. He was a
bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Cuckfield. (They were not my direct ancestors.)
James Pronger may have been baptised on 23 October 1763 in Nuthurst,
Sussex and have been the son of
Thomas Pronger and
Mary Peters.
Elizabeth Simmons date and place of birth/baptism are
unknown, to me. Might she have been baptised as Elizabeth
Symmonds on 4 June 1769 in Cuckfield, and have been the daughter of
Thomas Symmonds and Mary Picknall?
James Pronger and Elizabeth Simmons had
2 known children:
-
Thomas Pronger was baptised on 7 August 1791 in
Cuckfield.
Thomas may have married twice, firstly to Mary Courtney
by banns on 2 February 1817 in Broadwater, Sussex. They were both
said to have been of Broadwater.
Thomas and Mary had the following children:
-
Elizabeth Pronger was baptised on 23 January 1820 in
Brighton. Her father was then a carpenter of Oxford Place.
-
Mary Ann Pronger was baptised on 16 September 1821 in
Brighton. Her father was then a carpenter of Oxford Street.
Mary Ann married Henry Wilson on 3 September 1843 at
St. Nicholas, Brighton. Their fathers were named as Abel
Wilson and Thomas Pronger.
Henry and Mary Ann had the following children:
-
Henry William Wilson was baptised on 7 July 1844 in
Brighton. The baptism register noted that his father was a
whitesmith of Kew Street.
-
Elizabeth Sarah Wilson was baptised on 26 April
1846 in Brighton. The baptism register noted that her father
was an iron moulder of Mount Sion Place.
-
Kate Pronger was baptised on 13 July 1823 in Brighton.
Her father was a carpenter of Oxford Street.
-
James Pronger was baptised on 28 November 1824 in
Brighton. His father was a carpenter of Oxford Street.
-
William Pronger was baptised on 10 July 1827 in
Brighton. His father was a carpenter of Carlton Row.
Thomas married Mary Ann Richards in the third quarter of
1837 in Brighton.
The 1841 census recorded that 50 year old Thomas Pronger
was living in Gloster Street, Brighton along with his 35 year old wife
Mary and 3 year old son Frederick.
Thomas was then a carpenter and he and his son were born in Sussex, whilst
Mary was not.
When the 1851 census was recorded, Thomas was a 59 year old journeyman
carpenter and he was living with his wife and 2 children (Frederick and
Jane) at 12 Gloster Street, Brighton. He gave his place of birth as
Cuckfield and Mary as Pinhoe in Devon. Mary was then 48 years old.
Thomas and Mary had the following children:
-
Frederick Pronger was baptised on 12 September 1838 in
Brighton. In 1841 he was 3 years old and living with his parents.
In 1851 he was a 12 year old scholar.
Frederick married Jane Cager on 28
February 1864 at St. Nicholas, Brighton. He was then 26 years old
and she was 21. Their fathers were named as Thomas Pronger
and George Cager.
-
Jane Pronger was baptised on 25 May 1842 at St.
Peter's, Brighton, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann. When the
1851 census was recorded she was a 9 year old scholar.
Jane
married George Pannell on 5 April 1867 at St. Nicholas,
Brighton. They were both aged 24 years. Their fathers were
named as William Pannell and Thomas Pronger.
-
Mary Pronger was baptised on 21 October 1792 in
Cuckfield.
