Thomas PAYNE (1626-?)
and Joane (c1630-?)

Thomas Payne
and
Joane married sometime before or about 1651. They may have
married as Thomas Payne and Joan Gibb on
10 April 1649 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. He was then of East
Grinstead. But the Sussex marriage index also records that a
Thomas Payne married in 1651 in West Hoathly, but no bride's name
was recorded. And, a Thomas Payne married
Joan Hills on 13 March 1650/1 in Lindfield, Sussex.
Thomas Payne may have been baptised on 29
October 1626 in East Grinstead, Sussex, the son of
Thomas Payne and Lydia Bannester. Or, on 26
April 1628 in Horsted Keynes, the son of Thomas Payne and
possibly Sarah Worsetter
Joane's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
Joane Gib was baptised on 2 February 1623/4 in East
Grinstead and was the daughter of David Gibbe and
Dorothie Gavill.
Thomas Payne and Joane had 4 known children:
-
Sara Payne was baptised on 26 September 1651 in East
Grinstead. She may have married Thomas Grames on
19 October 1675 in East Grinstead.
-
Susanna Paine was baptised on 16 April 1654 in East
Grinstead. She may have married
John Vinall/Vennol
on 4 or 6 April 1678 in West Hoathly and then perhaps
William Vaux,
or William Box,
on 10 May 1681 at St. Anne's in Lewes. But, there was a
Susan Paine who was baptised on 21 July 1657 in East
Grinstead.
-
Mary Paine was baptised on 9 May 1656 in East Grinstead.
She may have married John Willet by licence on 19
August 1676 in Hartfield, Sussex. Their marriage licence was
issued on 19 August 1676 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes which recorded
that she was a spinster and they were both of East Grinstead. Or
she may have married John Beedle on 15 October 1678 in
West Hoathly. She was then of East Grinstead. Another Mary
Payne was baptised on 27 October 1649 in East Grinstead, the
daughter of William Payne and Susan.
-
Elizabeth Paine was baptised on 22 September 1659 in East
Grinstead. She may have married
John Hams
on 26 January 1680/1 in West Hoathly, but I think John married the
Elizabeth Payne who was baptised in West Hoathly in 1656.
However, an Elizabeth Payne married John Holder
on 5 June 1681 in West Hoathly. And another Elizabeth
Paine, spinster of Horsted Keynes married William
Barnard of Laughton on 9 June 1685 in Horsted Keynes.
John Box married Hannah Hames in 1754.
John's father was
George Box and he may have been the son of Susanna
Payne.
Hannah's father was
William Hames
and he was the son of Elizabeth Payne.
Were John and Hannah's grandmothers sisters? If so then I've gone
wrong, as I reckon Hannah's grandmother was the daughter of Henry rather
than Thomas. I/we need some wills or some other documents that might
be able to tell us, a) did Susan(na) marry William b) which Elizabeth
married John? I wonder if Thomas died after 1681 and left a will
naming his daughters and to whom they married?
I'm fairly sure the following is a different Thomas to the one above.
Thomas Payne of Horsted Keynes married Sarah
Longley by banns on 16 October 1660 at St. John sub Castro in
Lewes. They may have had the following children:
-
Thomas Payne was baptised on 2 February 1662/3 in
Horsted Keynes and buried there on 2 May 1667.
-
Sarah Payne was baptised on 2 October 1665 in Horsted
Keynes. She may have married John Smith by
licence on 19 May 1687 in Horsted Keynes. Their marriage licence
was issued on 9 May 1687 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which recorded
that she was of Horsted Keynes and he of Hurstpierpoint.
-
Elizabeth Payne was baptised on 6 December 1667 in
Horsted Keynes. Her mother's name was recorded as Mary. Did
she marry William Barnard in 1685 (see above).
