James PARSONS (1804-?)

and Mary SAUNDERS (c1804-1855)

James Parsons and Mary Saunders married by banns on 21 September 1824 in Cowfold, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Greenfield and William Hill.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

James Parsons was baptised on 11 May 1804 in Cowfold.  He was the son of William Parsons (1766-1842) and Hannah Trusler (1770-1845).  The baptism register recorded that he was the son of John and Hannah, although there were no other children of John and Hannah baptised in Cowfold at that time.

Mary Saunders may have been baptised on 8 November 1807 in Cowfold and have been the daughter of Charles Saunders and Mary Wight who had married on 7 April 1807 in Twineham.  A Mary Parsons died aged 51 years and was buried on 6 February 1855 in Cowfold.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 4 children were living in the Old Workhouse in Cowfold.  James and Mary were both said to be 35 years old and he was a farm labourer.  Their next door neighbours were John Roberts and his wife Ruth.

In 1851 the couple and 2 children (James and Walter) were living in Cowfold.  James and Mary were both 47 years old and he was a farm labourer.  They both gave their place of birth as Cowfold.

James Parsons and Mary Saunders had 7 known children:

  1. Peter Parsons was born about 1828.  He was 13 years old in 1841.

  2. William Parsons was baptised on 5 January 1831 in Cowfold.  He died aged 10 days and was buried on 9 January 1831.  The burial register noted that he was the son of James and Mary.

  3. Eliza Parsons was baptised on 7 October 1832 in Cowfold.  She was 10 yeas old in 1841.

Eliza married Henry Akehurst by banns on 1 October 1850 in Cowfold.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster and minor.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Akehurst and James Parsons who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Fairs and Frances Akehurst.

When the 1861 census was recorded the couple were living in Cowfold.  Henry was a 36 year old agricultural labourer and Eliza was 29.  They both gave their place of birth as Cowfold.  Also with them on census night was 56 year old widower and carter James Parsons, 19 year old brother-in-law James Parsons who were both born in Cowfold, and 8 month old boarder Emma C. Payne who had been born in Brighton.

  4. Elizabeth Parsons was baptised on 28 May 1836 in Cowfold.  She was 6 years old in 1841.

  5. Anne Parsons was baptised on 9 June 1839 in Cowfold.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer from West Grinstead.  At the time of the 1841 census she was 2 years old.

  6. James Parsons was baptised on 27 March 1842 in Cowfold.  In 1851 he was a 9 year old scholar.  He was a 19 year of agricultural labourer in 1861 and living in the home of his sister Eliza.

  7. Walter Parsons was baptised on 29 September 1844 in Cowfold.  He died aged 13 years and was buried on 14 June 1858 in Cowfold.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was a 6 year old scholar.
