John OSBORNE (1609-1657)

and Mary GRAY (c1610-?)

John Osborne and Mary Gray's marriage was recorded in the parish registers of Upper Beeding, Sussex on 16 May 1642, although I think it more likely they married in the chapel of St. Leonard's in Lower Beeding.  They may have been my 10x Great Grandparnets.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)

John Osborne was baptised on 25 June 1609 in Horsham, Sussex.  He was the son of John Osborne (c1580-1631) and Dorothy Cheesman (c1580-1648).  He was buried on 20 February 1656/7 in Upper Beeding.

Mary Gray's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might she have been baptised on 21 April 1611 in Billingshurst, Sussex, the daughter of Isaac Gray (1614-?) and Mary Quaile?

For ecclesiastical purposes Lower Beeding remained part of Upper Beeding until 1838.  The two were joined because the tithes of St. Leonard's Forest were granted to Sele priory in Upper Beeding.  See British History Online.

John Osbourne and Mary Gray may have the following children:

  1. Mary Osbourne was baptised on 11 May 1643 in Upper Beeding.  The names of her parents were not recorded in the baptism register.  She was buried on 10 October 1649 in Upper Beeding and the burial register noted that she was the daughter of John Osborn.

  2. John Osborne was baptised on 16 February 1644/5 in Upper Beeding.  The names of his parents were not recorded in the baptism register.

  3. Dorothie Osborne was baptised on 22 November 1646 in Upper Beeding.  The names of her parents were not recorded in the baptism register.  She or her grandmother was buried 24 March 1647/8 in Upper Beeding.

  4. William Osborn was baptised on 17 June 1649 in Upper Beeding.  The baptism register only recorded his father's name.

    William married Hannah.

    They had the following children:

    1. John Osborne was baptised on 26 August 1677 in Upper Beeding and buried there on 27 August 1677.

    2. Mary Osborne was baptised on 8 September 1679 in Upper Beeding, and buried there on 5 April 1690.  The burial register noted that she was the daughter of Anna Osbourne.

    3. Hannah Osborne was buried on 12 August 1683 in Upper Beeding and the burial register noted that she was the daughter of William and Hannah.

    4. Hannah Osborne was baptised between 4 December 1684 and 20 April 1685 in Upper Beeding.  Her mother's name was recorded as Sarah in the baptism register.

    5. William Osborn was baptised on 18 July 1686 in Upper Beeding and probably died as an infant.

    6. Rebecca Osborn may have been part of this family.  She was baptised on 27 May 1687 in Upper Beeding.  The names of her parents were not recorded in the baptism register.  She was buried on 26 March 1690 in Upper Beeding and only her name was recorded in the burial register.

    7. William Osborn was baptised on 17 April 1688 in Upper Beeding and buried there on 15 September 1693.  The burial register noted that he was the son of Hannah Osborn.

  5. Elizabeth Osborn was baptised on 10 February 1650/1 in Upper Beeding.  The names of her parents were not recorded in the baptism register.  An Elizabeth Osborn was buried on 18 May 1657 in Upper Beeding.  Only her name was recorded in the burial register.

  6. Thomas Osborne was baptised on 17 June 1655 in Upper Beeding.  The names of his parents were not recorded in the baptism register.  He married Joan in about 1680.  (They have their own page.)
