John NUTLEY (c1768-1827)

and Abigail WELLER (c1767-1830)

John Nutley and Abigail Weller married on 26 April 1790 in Rottingdean, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Rottingtdean.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Nutley's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He died aged 59 years and was buried on 18 October 1827 at St. Nicholas in Brighton, Sussex.

Abigail Weller's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died aged 63 years and was buried on 13 February 1830 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.  Another Abigail Weller married Charles Batchelor on 25 June 1786 at St. Nicholas in Brighton, Sussex.  One of them was baptised on 7 August 1768 in Barcombe, Sussex and was the daughter of John Weller and Ann Taylor.  Another was baptised on 18 April 1762 in Benenden, Kent, the daughter of John Weller and Ann

John Nutley and Abigail Weller had 5 or 6 known children:

  1. John Nutley was most probably part of this family.

John married Lydia Winter by banns on 22 January 1816 in Rottingdean.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Rottingdean.

John and Lydia had the following children:

    1. Caleb Nutley was baptised on 17 January 1818 in Rottingdean.

    2. John Nutley was baptised on 24 October 1819 in Rottingdean.

    3. Mercy Nutley was baptised on 8 April 1827 in Brighton.

  2. Sarah Nutley was baptised on 8 February 1795 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.  Did she marry William Davey by banns on 4 August 1813 in Brighton?  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

  3. Susanna Nutley was born on 28 May 1799 and baptised on 4 August 1799 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.

Joseph married Mary Dabbs by banns on 8 September 1824 in Brighton.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

Joseph and Mary had the following children:

    4. Henry Nutley was born in 1836 Brighton.  He was a picture framer.

Henry married Phebe Eason on 21 December 1856 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.

He then married Mary Goble, widow on 3 May 1890 at St. John's in Brighton.  Previously as Mary Jeffery she had married James Goble on 20 August 1871 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.

Mary Jeffery was baptised on 18 December 1852 at St. Nicholas, Brighton and was the daughter of Richard Jeffery or Harman and Harriet Christmas.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was a 9 year old scholar living at home with her parents and 3 sisters (Emma 13, Fanny 5 and Agnes 3), at 15 Pimlico in Brighton.  Her father was then a 39 year old bather and her mother a 34 year old washerwoman.  In 1861 her father's surname was recorded as Jeffrey, but in 1851 he was a Harman.  He had been baptised in 1822 and was the illegitimate son of Sarah Harman.

The 1891 census records that Henry was a 48 year old frame maker living at 8 Carlton Place in Brighton along with his 43 year old wife and 6 year old son Thomas Goble.  By 1901 63 year old Henry and 51 year old Mary were living in the Brighton workhouse.  He was a carpenter and joiner and she was a washerwoman.

    5. Susannah Nutley was born on 16 October 1838 in Portland Street, Brighton.

    6. Lucy Nutley was born in 1840.  She married Harry Dicker in 1861.

    8. George Nutley was born in 1845.  He married Mary Dabbs Hutchins in 1866.  George and Mary had the following children:

      1. Louisa Mary Nutley was born in 1872.

      2. Rosina Mary Nutley was born in 1874.  She married Aldred Adam Thair.

      3. Alice Susan Nutley was born in 1876.  She married Charles Edward Russell in 1896.

      4. Charles Harry Nutley was born in 1879.  He married Jane Mason.

    9. Susan Nutley was born in 1847 and died on 1 September 1858.

I have cobbled together much of the above from various places on the web.

My thanks to Jackie O'Gorman for the details about the family of Joseph born in 1806.
