Peter NOEL (c1690-1777)

and Elizabeth (c1686-1759)

Peter Noel and Elizabeth were most probably my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may have married sometime before April 1717.  No possible marriage for them has been found in the IGI or the Sussex marriage index.  They raised their family in Northchapel, Sussex, which borders Chiddingfold, Surrey to the north, Kirdford, Sussex to the east, Lurgashall, Sussex to the west, Tillington, Sussex to the south west and Petworth, Sussex to the south east.  I think it possible they may have lived in Colhook Common, or possibly the hamlet of Ebernoe.

Peter Noel's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me, but he may have been born within the parish of Northchapel, and he may have been the son of John Nowell and Elizabeth.  He or his son may have been buried as Peter Nowell on 24 April 1777 in Northchapel - I think senior, rather than junior, but I could be wrong.

Elizabeth's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She or her possible mother-in-law may have been buried on 17 October 1732 in Northchapel, but unfortunately the burial register only records that Elizabeth Nowel was buried.  Or she may have died aged 73 years and have been buried on 13 October 1759 in Northchapel, as Elizabeth Noell, therefore, born about 1686, which given that her last known child was born in 1728, this would seem quite likely.

At the Steyning Quarter Sessions held on 29/30 April 1717, a removal order was issued by the JP's returning Peter Knowell and his wife Elizabeth from Kirdford to Northchapel.

Peter Noel and Elizabeth had 8 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Noel, my probable 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 23 June 1717 in Northchapel.  She married William Cobby in 1736.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Peter Noayll was baptised on 31 January 1719/20 in Northchapel.  He may have married and had the following daughter:

    1. Mary Noel was baptised on 22 March 1752 in Kirdford.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  3. Ann Nowel was baptised on 15 July 1722 in Northchapel.  As Ann Noel she may have married John Puttwick on 1 October 1741 in Chiddingfold, Surrey.  Or as Ann Knowel to Edmund Fachen on 17 September 1748 in Chiddingfold.

  4. William Nowel was baptised on 7 June 1724 in Northchapel.  He may have been buried there on 28 May 1788, by the name of William Noel.

William married Sarah Hersey on 20 May 1748 in Northchapel.

Sarah was baptised on 3 March 1727/8 in Northchapel and was the daughter of John Hersy and Marlan Noel.  (William and Sarah may have been cousins, i.e. his father and her mother may have been brother and sister.)

William and Sarah may have had the following children however, there was also a William Noel baptised in Lurgashall in 1725:

    1. Sarah Nowell was baptised on 13 May 1750 in Northchapel.  She may have had the following child:

      1. William Nowel was baptised on 26 November 1769 in Northchapel.

    2. Elizabeth Nowel was baptised on 9 March 1755 in Northchapel.  She may have married Stephen Steptoe by banns on 10 September 1782 in Kirdford.  They were both then of Kirdford.

    3. John Nowel was baptised on 3 October 1756 in Lurgashall.

John may have married Mary Eede by banns on 4 November 1780 in Kirdford, at which time John was a bachelor of Northchapel and Mary a spinster of Kirdford.

John and Mary had the following child:

      1. William Noel was baptised on 3 June 1781 in Northchapel.

    4. Peter Nowel was baptised on 25 June 1758 in Lurgashall.

    5. William Nowel was baptised on 16 December 1759 in Lurgashall.

    6. Katarn Nowel was baptised on 3 July 1763 in Lurgashall.  She may have died aged 57 years (as per the burial register) and have been buried as Catherine Nowel on 22 May 1818 in Northchapel.

Catherine may have had the following son:

      1. James Noel was baptised on 30 August 1792 in Northchapel.  He may have been buried as James Knowl on 6 May 1811 in Northchapel, or he may have married Elizabeth Wellyn in 1819 in Northchapel.

    7. Market Nowel (daughter) was baptised on 27 October 1765 in Lurgashall.  (She may have been named after her maternal Grandmother, Marlan or Merlin.)

    8. Thomas Nowel was baptised on 10 May 1767 in Lurgashall.  He may have died as an infant and have been buried on 5 May 1768 in Northchapel.

  5. Mary Nowel was baptised on 3 November 1723 in Northchapel.  Mary may have married Richard Boxall on 27 September 1747 in Northchapel.  Or William Bettesworth on 26 February 1744 in Lurgashall.

  6. Sarah Nowell was baptised on 6 February 1725/6 in Northchapel.

  7. Thomas Nowell was baptised on 20 August 1727 in Northchapel.

  8. Joan Nowel was baptised on 11 August 1728 in Northchapel.
