John NOWEL (c1660-1717)

and Elizabeth (?-1732)

John Nowel and Elizabeth may have been my 8x Great Grandparents.  She may have been Elizabeth Marlan or Merlin.  I am guessing they married sometime in the 1680's or 90's in or around Northchapel or Kirdford, Sussex.

John Nowel's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was most probably buried as John Nowell on 14 July 1717 in Northchapel

Elizabeth's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have been buried on 17 October 1732 in Northchapel, but unfortunately the burial register only records that Elizabeth Nowel was buried.

John Nowel and Elizabeth had 1 or 2 known children and possibly more:

  1. Edward Nowell the son of John Nowell was buried on 20 January 1684/5 in Northchapel.

  2. Marlan Nowell was baptised on 25 February 1695/6 in Northchapel.

  3. As Magdalene Noel she married John Hearsey on 23 February 1722/3 in Fittleworth.

John may have been baptised on 28 July 1684 in Fittleworth and have been the son of John Hersee and Ann Stocker, who had married on 28 June 1681 in Kirdford, at which time John was of Chiddingfold, Surrey.

John and Merlin(g) had the following children:

    1. Mary Hersy was baptised on 8 March 1723/4 in Northchapel and buried there on 2 July 1724.

    2. Sarah Hersy was baptised on 3 March 1727/8 in Northchapel.  Sarah married William Nowel on 20 May 1748 in Northchapel.  He was the son of Peter Noel and Elizabeth.

    3. Thomas Hersy was baptised on 5 March 1731/2 in Northchapel.

  4. Peter Noel, my possible 7x Great Grandfather, may have been born about 1690.  He married Elizabeth (c1686-1759) sometime before April 1717.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Alice Nowel married Thomas Barber on 28 September 1718 in Northchapel.

Thomas died aged 73 years and was buried on 29 November 1768, therefore, born about 1695.  Might he have been the son of John Barber and Mary Martin who had married on 4 October 1683 in Petworth, at which time John was of Henfield?

Thomas and Alice had the following children:

    1. Mary Barber was baptised on 6 November 1720 in Northchapel.

    2. Thomas Barber was baptised on 30 June 1723 in Northchapel.

    3. Elizabeth Barber was baptised on 14 November 1725 in Northchapel.

    4. Sarah Barber was baptised on 30 July 1727 in Northchapel.

    5. Alice Barber was baptised on 22 June 1729 in Northchapel and most probably buried there as an infant on 13 January 1729/30.

    6. Ann Barber was baptised on 22 June 1729 in Northchapel.  She may have been buried on 1 April 1730 in Northchapel.

  6. John Noel and Mary may have had the following children:

    1. John Noel was baptised on 9 December 1719 in Lurgashall.  Neither of his parents were named in the baptism register.

    2. Mary Noel was baptised on 4 May 1721 in Lurgashall.  Neither of her parents were named in the baptism register.  She or another Mary Noel was baptised on 15 March 1722 in Lurgashall and again no parents names were recorded.

    3. William Noel was baptised on 23 February 1725 in Lurgashall.  Only his father was named in the baptism register.

    4. Thomas Nowel was baptised on 26 March 1732 in Lurgashall.  Both his parents were named in the baptism register.

Could the following be related:

A marriage licence was issued on 12 December 1622 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester to John Nowell and Jane Booker, spinster, who were both of Kirdford.

Margaret Knolls married Hugh Dunnidge on 2 October 1636 in Petworth.

Robert Noall married Joane Gadde on 16 May 1641 in Kirdford.

John Noall was baptised on 2 May 1675 in Northchapel.  He was the son of Thomas Noell and Ann.

Katherine Noell married Henry Kelime by licence on 28 April 1702 in Petworth.  She was then a spinster of Northchapel and he of Kirdford.

Mary Nowel married John Bentley on 21 July 1779 in Northchapel.  Their marriage licence was issued the day before by the Archdeaconry of Chichester.  It recorded that Mary was a 50 year old spinster of Northchapel, whilst John was a 50 year old widower from Lurgashall.

Mary Noel, pauper, was buried on 25 January 1786 in Northchapel.

Hannah Knowl was buried on 3 April 1814 in Northchapel, aged, 78 years, therefore, she was born about 1736.  (John Noel married Hannah Luff by banns on 20 November 1788 in Kirdford, at which time they were both of Kirdford.)
