John NORRIS (1694-?)

and Margaret VIRGO (1684-?)

 

John Norris and Margaret Virgo may have been my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 10 June 1716 in Lancing, Sussex.  Their marriage was also recorded in the New Shoreham, Sussex parish register which recorded that John was of Hurst (Hurstpierpoint, Sussex).

John Norris may have been baptised on 11 March 1693/4 in Cuckfield, Sussex and have been the son of Thomas Norris (1665-1731) and Catherine Dawes (1667-?).

Margaret Virgo was baptised on 6 March 1683/4 in Old Shoreham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Richard Virgo and Ann Courner.

 

John Norris and Margaret Virgo had 5 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Norris was baptised on 14 July 1717 in Cuckfield.

  2. John Norris was baptised on 22 March 1718/9 in Cuckfield.  He may have been buried on 16 February 1776 as a widower, or 24 April 1777, both burials in Cuckfield.

    John married Jane Hazelgrove on 17 April 1746 in Cuckfield.

    Jane may have been buried on 19 March 1765 in Cuckfield.

    John and Jane had at least 2 children:

    1. John Norris was baptised on 9 January 1746/7 in Cuckfield.  He died aged 56 years and was buried on 21 August 1803 in Cuckfield.

    2. Richard Norris was baptised on 6 February 1757 in Cuckfield.

      Richard married Mary Dumbrell by banns on 15 April 1781 in Cuckfield.  They were both then of Cuckfield.

      When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were living at Stone Cross in Lindfield.  Richard was said to be an 85 year old agricultural labourer and Mary was 80.  They were both born in Sussex.

      Richard and Mary had the following children:

      1. Joseph Norris was baptised on 10 February 1793 in Lindfield, Sussex.  He was most probably buried on 29 October 1794 in Lindfield

      2. Mary Norris was baptised on 10 February 1793 in Lindfield.  She was most probably buried on 5 July 1794 in Lindfield.

      3. Jane Norris was baptised on 28 June 1795 in Lindfield.

      4. Martha Norris was baptised on 1 August 1799 in Lindfield.

  3. Ann Norris was baptised on 8 October 1721 in Cuckfield.

  4. Thomas Norris was baptised on 13 January 1722/3 in Cuckfield.  He may have been buried on 20 September 1731 in Cuckfield, but this burial may refer to his Grandfather.

  5. Richard Norris may have been my 5x Great Grandfather.  He was baptised on 24 October 1725 in Cuckfield.  He married Mary Penfold in 1754.  (They have their own page.)

 

John Norris and Mary had the following child:

  1. Richard Norris was baptised on 8 January 1715/6 in Sidlesham, Sussex.

 

Thomas Norris had the following child:

  1. Richard Norris was baptised on 25 March 1719 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.

 

William Norris and Elizabeth had the following child:

  1. Richard Norris was baptised on 8 September 1734 in Cuckfield, Sussex.

 

Thomas Norris and Jane had the following child:

  1. Richard Norris was baptised on 27 February 1736/7 in Selsey, Sussex.

 

Richard Norris was buried on 26 February 1719 in Sidlesham, Sussex.

Richard Norris was buried on 10 May 1719 in Westhampnett, Sussex.

Richard Norris was buried on 23 February 1751 in Hamsey, Sussex.

Richard Norris was buried on 7 November 1756 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.

Richard Norris was buried on 11 July 1763 in Chiddingly, Sussex.

 

Richard Nores and Jean Jenner married on 12 February 1726/7 in Wivelsfield, Sussex.

 

Richard Norris and Jane Hoath married by licence on 13 September 1748 in Pembury, Kent.  He was then from Horsted Keynes and she was from East Grinstead.

Richard and Jane had the following children:

  1. Sarah Norris was baptised on 19 August 1749 in Horsted Keynes.

  2. Jane Norris was baptised on 24 October 1753 in Horsted Keynes.

 

Richard Norris and Mary Penfold married on 16 My 1754 in Steyning, Sussex.

 

Richard Norris and Ann had the following child:

  1. James Norris was baptised on 23 February 1800 in Rumboldswyke, Sussex.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer from Caterham, Surrey.

 

Richard Norris and Mercy Wedge married by banns on 30 March 1807 in Bosham, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.

Richard and Mercy had the following children:

  1. William Norris was baptised on 30 March 1807 in Bosham.  William married Lucy.  William and Lucy had the following child:

    1. Richard Norris was baptised on 14 October 1838 in Funtington.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer from Ashling.

    2. Mercy Norris was baptised on 14 May 1843 in Funtington.  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer from Break Wood.

  2. Mary Ann Norris was baptised on 19 June 1808 in Bosham.

  3. Charles Norris was baptised on 29 July 1810 in Bosham.

  4. Harriett Norris was baptised on 8 August 1813 in Funtington, Sussex.  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer from Brake Wood.

  5. Stephen Norris was baptised on 29 October 1815 in Funtington.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer from West Ashling and that his mother's name was Mary.

  6. James Norris was baptised on 10 May 1818 in Funtington.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer from the Common.

  7. Amelia Norris was baptised on 19 August 1821 in Funtington.  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer from the Common.
