Edward NORRIS (1735-1805)

and Susanna JENNER (1738-?)

 

Edward Norris and Susanna Jenner married by banns on 24 April 1764 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Edward Norris was baptised on 19 April 1737 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  He was the son of Edward Norris (1709-1769) and Mary Saxby (1701-1769).  Edward died aged 67 years and was buried on 1 February 1805 in Cuckfield.  The burial register noted he was a bricklayer.

Susannah Jenner was baptised on 14 May 1738 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Charles Jenner and Sarah Tully.

 

Edward Norris and Susannah Jenner had 4 known children:

  1. Edward Norris was baptised on 26 December 1765 in Cuckfield.

    Edward married Sarah Packham by banns on 1 January 1793 in Cuckfield.  He was a bachelor and mason and she a spinster.  They were both of Cuckfield.

    Sarah was baptised on 22 July 1766 in Cuckfield and was the daughter of John Packham and Sarah Jenner.  She died aged 38 years and was buried on 22 February 1805 in Cuckfield.  The burial register noted she was the wife of Edward Norris a bricklayer.

    Edward and Sarah had the following children:

    1. Sarah Norris was baptised on 21 January 1796 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a bricklayer.

    2. Elizabeth Norris was baptised on 24 June 1798 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a bricklayer.

      Elizabeth may have had the following son:

      1. Edward Wood Norris was baptised on 28 June 1818 at St. Nicholas in Brighton, Sussex.

    3. Susanna Norris was born on 18 March 1800 and baptised on 13 April 1800 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a bricklayer.  She died on 10 June 1862 at Fairview, Norwood and was buried on 16 June 1862 at the Kensington Pioneer Park, Maesbury, South Australia.

      Susanna married Henry Cheetham by banns on 10 July 1820 in New Shoreham, Sussex.  They were both then of New Shoreham.

      Henry was born about 1801.  He died and was buried on 1 September 1881 at Kensington Pioneer Park.  He was an independent chapel Reverend.

      When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 4 children (Martha, John, Alexander and Edward) were living in Wilderness Hill, Rochdale, Lancashire.  Henry and Susanna were both said to be 40 years old.  He was born in Lancashire as were his children and Susanna was not.  Also with the family was 23 year old Edward Norris was a bricklayer, not born in Lancashire and 13 year old servant Elizabeth Butterworth.

      Henry and Susanna had the following children:

      1. Mary Ann Cheetham was born on 26 February 1821 and baptised on 4 March 1821 at St. Mary's, Wardleworth, Lancashire or Rochdale, Lancashire.  She died aged 87 years at College Park, South Australia and was buried on 27 April 1908 at the High Street Kensington Cemetery.

      2. Sarah Cheetham was born on 18 April 1828 and baptised on 25 May 1828 at the Providence Chapel, High Street, Rochdale.

      3. Martha Cheetham was born on 30 June 1831 and baptised on 31 July 1831 at the Providence Chapel, High Street, Rochdale.  She died on 13 May 1854 and was buried on 15 May 1854 at the Kensington Pioneer Park.

      4. John Cheetham was born on 21 April 1833 and baptised on 12 June 1833 at the Ebenezer Independent Chapel in Calderbrook, Lancashire.

      5. Alexander Cheetham was baptised on 21 February 1836 at the Ebenezer Independent Chapel in Calderbrook, Lancashire.

      6. Edward Cheetham was born about 1839.  He died on 12 May 1866 and was buried on 14 May 1866 in Kensington Pioneer Park.

    4. John Norris was born on 14 November and baptised on 5 December 1802 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted his father was a bricklayer.

      John married Jane Chambers by banns on 28 May 1831 in Uckfield, Sussex.

      Jane was baptised on 22 March 1807 in Uckfield and was the daughter of William Chambers and Argent Moon (1777-1838).  She died aged 34 years and was buried on 12 February 1841 in Cuckfield.

      The 1841 census recorded John was a 35 year old bricklayer and he along with his 4 children (Edward, Jane, Thomas and Anna) were living in Cuckfield.  Also with the family was 20 year old Thomas Mitchell who was a miller and 15 year old servant Elizabeth Bone.

      When the 1851 census was recorded, John was a 48 year old widower and bricklayer/labourer.  He and his 3 children (Edward, Jane and Thomas) were living in Church Street, Cuckfield.

      John and Jane had the following children:

      1. Edward Norris was baptised on 28 October 1832 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted his father was a bricklayer.  In 1841 he was 8 years old.  He was an 18 year old bricklayer/labourer in 1851.

      2. Jane Norris was baptised on 27 April 1834 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a bricklayer.  In 1841 she was 7 years old.  She was a 17 year old housekeeper in 1851.

      3. Thomas Norris was baptised on 8 May 1836 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted his father was a bricklayer.  In 1841 he was 5 years old.  He was a 14 year old scholar in 1851.

      4. Anna Norris was baptised on 17 February 1839 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a bricklayer.  In 1841 she was 2 years old.  She died aged 6 years and 9 months and was buried on 26 August 1845 in Cuckfield.

      5. Ebenezer Norris was baptised on 21 March 1841 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted his father was a bricklayer.  He died aged 4 months and was buried on 6 June 1841 in Cuckfield.

    Edward next married Ann Good or Gourd by banns on 11 June 1808 in Cuckfield.  He was a widower and bricklayer and she a spinster, and they were both of Cuckfield.

    Ann was born about 1774.  She died aged 52 years and was buried on 6 April 1826 in Cuckfield.  The burial register noted she was the wife of Edward Norris.

    Edward and Ann had the following child:

    1. Richard Norris was baptised on 29 October 1809 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted he was the son of Edward and Ann, and his father was a bricklayer.  He was buried on 15 February 1810 in Cuckfield and the burial register noted he was the son of Edward Norris a bricklayer.

  2. Elizabeth Norris was baptised on 24 April 1767 in Cuckfield.

  3. Thomas Norris was baptised on 18 August 1770 in Cuckfield.

  4. William Norris was baptised on 21 October 1773 in Cuckfield.  He died aged 73 years and was buried on 9 February 1847 in Cuckfield.

    William married Ann Field by banns on 16 March 1801 in Cuckfield.  They were both of Cuckfield.

    Ann was born about 1775.  She died aged 45 years and was buried on 1 September 1820 in Cuckfield.  The burial register noted she was the wife of William Norris.

    William and Ann had the following children:

    1. Mary Ann Norris was baptised on 23 August 1801 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a bricklayer.  Mary Ann married Henry Penfold by banns on 22 October 1820 in Cuckfield.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Cuckfield.

    2. Elizabeth Norris was baptised on 2 September 1804 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a bricklayer.

    3. Edward Norris was baptised on 29 March 1807 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted his father was a bricklayer.  Edward may have married Sarah Daws by banns on 19 October 1829 in Cuckfield.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.

    4. James Norris was baptised on 7 May 1809 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted his father was a bricklayer.  He died aged 3 years and was buried on 11 March 1812 in Cuckfield.

    5. Sarah Norris was baptised on 14 July 1811 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a bricklayer.

    6. Louisa Norris was baptised on 27 June 1813 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a bricklayer of Broadstreet in Cuckfield.

    7. Amelia Norris was baptised on 9 March 1817 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted her father was a bricklayer.

    8. William Norris was baptised on 15 November 1818 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register noted his father was a bricklayer.
