John NORMAN (1698-1762)

and Susan RICHARDSON (1699-1762)

John Norman and Susan Richardson were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may also have been my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 28 September 1722 in Reigate, Surrey.

John Norman was born on 15 February 1697/8 and baptised on 3 March 1697/8 in Henfield, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 224 John Norman (1667-1720) and Ann Gaston (1667-?).  He was buried on 24 December 1762 in Henfield.  (See below for details of other John Normans.)

Susanna Richardson may have been baptised on 13 August 1699 in Merstham, Surrey.  Unfortunately her parents names were not recorded in the baptism register.  I think it possible her parents were Malachy Richardson (1669-?) and Susanna Bennet who married on 16 October 1698 in nearby Chipstead, Surrey.  A William Richardson had children baptised in Merstham in 1692 and 1696, and there were 2 other children baptised there in 1701 (Elizabeth) and 1707 (Malachy) with unrecorded parents.  She was buried on 4 July 1762 in Henfield, as Susannah Norman.  There was another Susanna Richardson baptised on 8 March 1701/2 in Byfleet, Surrey, the daughter of Robert Richardson and Elizabeth, but Byfleet is a fair distance from Reigate, whereas Merstham is close to Reigate.

John Norman and Susan Richardson had 5 known children:

1. Ann Norman, my 5x Great Grandmother, was born on 1 September and baptised on 11 September 1723 in Henfield.  She married Thomas Snashall in 1745.  (They have their own page.)

2. Elizabeth Norman was born on 20 November and baptised on 26 November 1725 in Henfield.  She married Nicholas Matthew in 1758.  (They have their own page.)

3. John Norman was born on 4 August and baptised on 14 August 1728 in Henfield.  He was buried there on 15 April 1729.

4. John Norman was born on 19 May and baptised on 3 June 1730 in Henfield.  He may have been buried on 29 October 1731 in Henfield.

5. Richard Norman was born on 4 November and baptised on 15 November 1732 in Henfield.

Other John Normans:

1. John Norman was baptised on 21 March 1680/1 in Ditchling, Sussex.  He was the son of John Norman and Sarah Verral who had married in Ditchling on 18 February 1678/9.  A John Norman was buried on 23 June 1689 in Ditchling.

2. John Norman was baptised on 12 June 1681 East Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the son of Richard Norman and Elizabeth Wright who had married in East Grinstead on 28 May 1672.

3. John Norman was baptised on 18 December 1681 in Rotherfield, Sussex.  He was the son of William Norman and Temperance.

4. John Norman was baptised on 19 April 1685 in West Chiltington, Sussex.  He was the son of Edmund Norman and Elizabeth Pelham who had married in West Chiltington on 23 April 1682.  He most probably died young as a brother John Norman was baptised on 22 May 1694 in West Chiltington.  He too died young and was buried in January 1694/5.

5. John Norman was baptised in February 1704/5 in Buxted, Sussex.  He was the son of William Norman.

6. John Norman was baptised on 17 September 1706 in Rotherfield, Sussex.  He was the son of William Norman and Alice.

7. John Norman married Mary Burch or Burt by licence on 28 April 1719 in Ticehurst, Sussex.  He was a yeoman of Buxted and she a spinster of Ticehurst.  They may have had the following children:

   1. Mary Norman was baptised on 18 July 1721 in Buxted.

   2. Anne Norman was baptised in June 1723 in Buxted.

   3. John Norman was baptised on 13 May 1725 in Buxted.

   4. William Norman was baptised on 6 January 1726/7 in Buxted.

   5. Thomas Norman was baptised on 29 June 1729 in Buxted.

   Three John Normans were buried in Buxted on 9 April 1729, 24 March 1739 and 15 February 1746.

8. John Norman married Mary Crust on 16 April 1723 in Uckfield, Sussex.  A John Norman was buried on 25 December 1726 and another on 27 May 1747, both in Uckfield.

9. John Norman married Sarah Pain by banns on 27 August 1723 in Iford, Sussex.  Sarah was of Iford.  He may have previously married Sarah Gubbins on 29 September 1709 in Rodmell, Sussex, at which time he was of Iford and Sarah of Rodmell.  John and his first may have been the parents of:

   1. John Norman was baptised on 17 September 1710 in Rodmell.

   2. Sarah Norman was baptised on 1 January 1712/3 in Rodmell.

   3. George Norman

   4. Mary Norman

   5. Peter Norman - according to the British Vital Records, George, Mary and Peter were all born and died on 6 July 1715 in Rodmell.  Were they triplets?

   6. William Norman was baptised on 17 July 1716 in Iford.

   7. Mary Norman was baptised on 19 April 1719 in Iford.

   8. Martha Norman was baptised on 19 April 1719 in Iford.
