John NEWNHAM (1677-?)

and Elizabeth ROOTES (1667-1740)

 

John Newnham and Elizabeth Willson married by licence on 28 August 1701 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.  He was then a yeoman of Ardingly and she a widow of Fletching.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which also mentioned he was a bachelor of Ardingly and Elizabeth Wilson a widow of Fletching.  Previously as Elizabeth Rootes she had married John Willson, gent on 19 December 1689 in Fletching, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Newnham was baptised on 27 September 1677 in Ardingly, Sussex.  He was the son of Edward Newnham (1648-?) and Susanna Balcombe (1649-?).

Elizabeth Rootes was baptised on 1 April 1667 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Thomas Rootes and Elizabeth Didicott.  Elizabeth died died aged 70 years (as per a transcript of the registers) and was buried on 2 June 1740 in Ardingly.  The burial register noted that she was the wife of Mr. John Newnham, senior from Westhill.

 

John Newnham and Elizabeth Rootes had 9 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Newnham was born on 4 September 1702 and baptised on 11 September 1702 in Ardingly.

    Elizabeth may have married William Putland on 21 May 1724 in Ardingly.  He was from East Grinstead.

  2. Mary Newnham was born on 23 November 1703 and baptised on 26 November 1703 in Ardingly.  She died aged 81 years and was buried on 27 June 1784 in West Hoathly.

    Mary married John Browne on 17 September 1728 in Ardingly.  He was from West Hoathly.

    John was baptised on 25 February 1675/6 in West Hoathly and was the son of John Browne and Ann Paine.  He was buried on 17 November 1765 in West Hoathly.

    John and Mary had the following children:

    1. John Browne was baptised on 29 August 1729 in West Hoathly and buried there on 29 September 1731.

    2. William Browne was baptised on 30 August 1732 in West Hoathly.

    3. Joseph Browne was baptised on 9 September 1737 in West Hoathly.

    4. Mary Browne was baptised on 20 July 1743 in West Hoathly.

  3. John Newnham was born on 17 September 1705 and baptised on 20 September 1705 in Ardingly.  He was buried on 1 September 1710 in Ardingly.

  4. Thomas Newnham was born on 4 January 1706/7 and baptised on 7 January 1706/7 in Ardingly.  He was buried on 31 July 1708 in Ardingly.

  5. Dedicott Newnham (son) was baptised on 17 March 1707/8 in Ardingly and buried there on 22 March 1708.

  6. Susanna Newnham was baptised on 30 January 1710 in Ardingly and buried there on 15 September 1710.

  7. John Newnham was baptised on 6 February 1711/2 in Ardingly.  John married Anne in about 1736/7.  (They have their own page.)

  8. Sara Newnham was baptised on 6 February 1711/2 in Ardingly.  She died aged 22 years and was buried on 18 June 1734 in Ardingly.

  9. Susanna Newnham was baptised on 18 November 1713 in Ardingly.
