Thomas NEWMAN
(1668-1744)
and Ann DAVIS (1684-1760)

Thomas Newnham and Ann Davis were my 6x Great Grandparents.
to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married on 10 April
1711 at the parish church of St. Mary's in Shipley, Sussex. He was then described as junior.
This may have been Thomas's second or third marriage. He first married
Ann Deane on 6 November 1693 in Thakeham, Sussex, at which time he
was of Shipley. He may then have married Hannah sometime
between 1696 and 1699, or Ann and Hannah may have been one and the same,
which I think is most likely.
Thomas Newman was baptised on 9 October 1668 in Shipley. He was the son of
Thomas Newman (c1630-1713) and
Mary Hunt
(1630-1705). He was buried on 12 April 1744 in Shipley. Thomas
left a will dated 14 October 1741 and proved on 5 May 1744, in which he was described as a tailor of Shipley.
(Click
here to read my
transcript of his will.) His grandfather may have been John Newman
who was also a tailor and at one time of Billingshurst, although he was of
Pulborough when he died.
Ann Deane's date and place of birth are unknown, to me. She may
have been buried on 30 November 1705 in Shipley, but the burial register
records that it was Hannah Newman wife of Thomas Newman who
was buried. The Sussex marriage index does not record the marriage of
a Thomas Newman or Newnham to Hannah before 1705.
A Hannah Deane was baptised on 22 December 1673 in Thakeham, the
daughter of Thomas Deane and Joan, and there was also a
Hanna Deane baptised on 29 March 1676 in Shipley, the daughter of
Richard Deane. Or was she baptised as An Deane in March
1661, the daughter of Thomas Deane and Joan?
Ann Davis's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
She was buried on 8 May 1760 in Shipley and the
burial register recorded that she was a widow.
Might she have been baptised as Ann Davey on 3 March 1683/4 in
Shipley and have been the daughter of William Davy and Mary Lau
(?-1705)? There was also an Ann Davy baptised on 16 October
1690 in Horsham, the daughter of Thomas Davy and Anne.
Thomas Newman and Ann Deane
may have had the following children:
-
Mary Newman
was baptised on 18 January 1695/6 in Shipley. She
had died by the time her father made his will in 1741, in which he simply named
her as his daughter Mary. Her father left one shilling a piece to Mary's
children, but he did not name them in his will. She may have been
buried as Mary Pavy on 14 May 1738 in Shipley.
Mary may have married John Pavy on 14 September 1724 in Shipley.
Or was it her cousin Mary born in 1707?
John may have married Rachel Rowland on 7 February 1744/5 in
Horsham. She may have been born on 20 December 1706 and baptised as
Rachell Rouland in December 1706 in Horsham, the daughter of
Thomas Rouland and Elizabeth Woodman.
John and Mary had the following known children:
-
Charles Pavy was baptised on 8 October 1727 in Shipley.
Charles married Sarah Penfold on 2 May 1751 in Shipley.
-
Thomas Pavy was baptised on 12 October 1729 in Shipley.
-
Mary Pavey was baptised on 20 June 1736 in Shipley.
Mary may have married William Shaw by licence on 1 June 1760 in
Horsham. He was a husbandman and they were both of Horsham.
The witness to their marriage were John Pavey and
Jane Hunt.
-
John Newman was baptised on 25 August 1699 in Shipley. His
mother's name was recorded in the baptism register as Hannah. He was buried on 8 October
1702 in Shipley.
Thomas Newman and Ann
Davis had 5 known children:
-
Sarah Newnham was baptised on 23
July 1711 in Shipley. She was buried on 11 July 1775 in Shipley and
the burial register recorded that she was a widow. She was mentioned
in her father's will.
As Sarah
Newman she married William Randall
on 2 March 1730/1 in Shipley.
William and Sarah had the following known children:
-
Edward Randell
was baptised on 22 July 1732 in Shipley and buried there on 9 December
1732.
-
Ann Randal
was baptised in December 1734 in Shipley.
-
Sarah Randall
was baptised on 2 January 1736/7 in Shipley.
-
William
Randall was baptised on 6 February 1739/40 in Shipley. He may
have been buried on 1 November 1782 in Shipley.
-
Mary Randall
was baptised on 15 January 1743/4 in Shipley.
-
Elizabeth
Randall was baptised on 15 January 1746/7 in Shipley.
-
Thomas Randall
was baptised on 4 February 1749/50 in Shipley. He may have been
buried on 25 April 1797 or 26 Apirl 1804 in Shipley.
-
Thomas Newnham was baptised on 18
November 1714 in Shipley. He was appointed the sole executor of his
father's will. He may have been buried on 14 March 1773 in
Pulborough.
Thomas may have married Betty Serjeant on
10 June 1742 in Itchingfield, Sussex. He was then of Shipley and she
of Itchingfield.
Thomas and Betty were issued a settlement certificate on 13 April 1751 by
Shipley parish overseers, allowing them to settle in Pulborough.
Thomas and Betty had 2 known children:
Sarah Newman was baptised on 22 August 1756 in Pulborough.
Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.
Thomas Newman was baptised on 30 April 1758 in Pulborough.
Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.
-
John Newman seems to have been
baptised twice, firstly on 14 March
1716/7 and then on 1 November 1717, both times in Shipley. He was mentioned in his father's will.
He may have married Mary Streater
in
1747. (They have their own page.)
-
James Newman was baptised in
February 1719/20 in Shipley. He was mentioned in his father's will.
Was he buried on 13 April 1776 in Shipley?
-
Ann
Newman, my 5x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 20 May 1730 in Shipley. She was
mentioned in her father's will. Ann married
John
Mansbridge by banns on 12 October 1756 in Shipley. (They
have their own page.)
