John NAPPER (1645-1706)

and Mary GIBBONS (c1645-?)

John Napper and Mary Gibeons may have been my 9x Great Grandparents.  They married by licence on 23 October 1665 in Rudgwick, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Chichester which noted he was a yeoman and Mary Gibbens was a spinster.  They were both said to be of Rudgwick.

John Napper was baptised on 25 February 1644/5 Rudgwick.  He was the son of Matthew Napper (c1620-1693) and Elizabeth Savage.  John may have been buried on 23 May 1706 in Rudgwick.  The burial register noted he was from Wisborough Green.  Might he have left a will and mentioned his daughter Sarah Clayton?  The will of John Napper the elder of Wisborough Green was made on 12 April 1706 and proved on 12 July 1706.

Mary Gibbons's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have been buried as Mrs. Mary Napper, a widow on 19 January 1724/5 in Wisborough Green.

(As at 28 May 2014, I'm not sure about John's baptism in 1644/5, as this would have meant he married before he was 21 and there was nothing noted in their marriage entry to say he was under age.  A John Napper son of Henry and Sara was baptised on 24 June 1642 in Wisborough Green.)

John Napper and Mary Gibbons had 8 known children:

  1. Matthew Napper was baptised on 14 August 1666 in Rudgwick.

Matthew may have married Jane Butler by licence on 9 December 1701 at St. Olave in Chichester, Sussex.  Matthew was then a husbandman/yeoman of Rudgwick and Jane a spinster of Wisborough Green.

  2. Joan Napper was baptised on 3 February 1667/8 in Rudgwick.  The Wisborough Green burial register notes that Joane daughter of John was buried on 8 April 1681.

  3. Mary Napper was baptised on 15 December 1669 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.  The baptism register noted she was the daughter of John and Mary of Trenchmans.  She may have married John Napper on 18 April 1700 in Rudgwick.

  4. John Napper was baptised on 19 December 1671 in Wisborough Green.  He may have married Mary Napper on 18 April 1700 in Rudgwick.  (Presumably brother didn't marry sister!  But which sibling married and might it have been to a cousin?)
