John MOORE (1791-1875)

and Charlotte (c1791-1875)

John Moore and Charlotte Greenfield married by banns on 9 April 1824 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a widow.  The witnesses to their marriage were Clem Voice and James Champion.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  John was the Great Grand Nephew of 2 of my 6x Great Grandmothers.)

John Moore was baptised on 1 May 1791 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the son of James Moore (1762-1843) and Mary Dale (c1765-1811).  John died aged 84 years and was buried on 17 October 1875 in Cowfold.

Charlotte was born about 1791-3 in Billingshurst or Cowfold, Sussex.  She died aged 82 years at the Cuckfield Union workhouse and was buried on 10 December 1875 in Cowfold.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were both said to be 50 years old and they were living at Ashurst Cottage in Cowfold, along with their 3 children (Daniel, Esther and Allen).  John was then a farm labourer.

At the time of the 1851 census the couple and 4 children (Job, Moses, Esther and Allen) were living at Dudneys Cottage, Horsham Road, Cowfold.  John was a 59 year old agricultural labourer and Charlotte was also 59.  They both gave their place of birth as Cowfold.  Also with them was 17 year old lodger and agricultural labourer, Jeremiah Moore.

The 1861 census recorded that the couple and their daughter Esther were living at Crabtree in Cowfold.  They were both aged 70 years.  John gave his place of birth as Cowfold and Charlotte as Billingshurst.  Also with the family were 2 lodgers, 60 year old Thomas Akehurst who was an agricultural labourer and 13 year old George Akehurst who was a shoe boy.

In 1871 the couple and their daughter Esther were still living at Crabtree in Cowfold and they were both said to be 79 years old.  John was a labourer from Cowfold and Charlotte was from Billingshurst.  Also with them was 54 year old boarder and nurse, Elizabeth Welland.

John Moore and Charlotte had 5 known children:

  1. Job Moore was baptised on 24 November 1824 in Cowfold.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register and he was a labourer.  He was a 26 year old agricultural labourer in 1851.

  2. Moses Moore was baptised on 19 March 1826 in Cowfold.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer.  He was a 25 year old agricultural labourer in 1851.

  3. Daniel Moore was baptised on 9 March 1828 in Cowfold, at which time his father was a labourer.  He was 14 years old in 1841.

  4. Hester Moore was baptised on 8 November 1829 in Cowfold, at which time her father was a labourer.  She was 11 years old in 1841.  When the 1851 census was recorded, Esther Moore was 21 years old.  In 1861 she was 31 years old an living with her parents.  It was noted in the census that she was an imbecile from birth.  The 1871 census recorded she was 40 years old.  By the time of the 1881 census Esther was 49 years old and living at the Cuckfield Union workhouse and the census noted she was an imbecile.

  5. Allen Moore was baptised on 27 May 1832 in Cowfold, at which time his father was a labourer.  He was 9 years old in 1841.  In 1851 he was an 18 year old agricultural labourer.

    Allen married Mary Ann Kennett.

Allen and Mary had the following child:

    1. Ann Elizabeth Moore was born in 1870.  She married William Brazier.  They had the following child:

      1. Ellen Brazier was born in 1895.  She married Walter Gravett.  They have the following child:

Many thanks to Rita Gates for passing on the line of descent from Allen to William.
