John Moore and Charlotte Greenfield
married by banns on 9 April 1824 in Billingshurst, Sussex. He was then a bachelor and she a
widow. The witnesses to their marriage were Clem Voice
and James Champion. (They were not my direct
ancestors. John was the Great Grand Nephew of 2 of my 6x Great
John Moore was baptised on 1 May 1791 in Cowfold,
Sussex. He was the son of
(1762-1843) and Mary
Dale (c1765-1811). John died aged 84 years and was
buried on 17 October 1875 in Cowfold.
Charlotte was born about 1791-3 in Billingshurst or
Cowfold, Sussex. She died aged 82 years at the Cuckfield Union
workhouse and was buried on 10 December 1875 in Cowfold.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were both said to be 50
years old and they were living at Ashurst Cottage in Cowfold, along with
their 3 children (Daniel, Esther and Allen). John was then a farm
At the time of the 1851 census the couple and 4 children (Job, Moses,
Esther and Allen) were living at Dudneys Cottage, Horsham Road, Cowfold.
John was a 59 year old agricultural labourer and Charlotte was also 59.
They both gave their place of birth as Cowfold. Also with them was
17 year old lodger and agricultural labourer,
The 1861 census recorded that the couple and their daughter Esther were
living at Crabtree in Cowfold. They were both aged 70 years.
John gave his place of birth as Cowfold and Charlotte as Billingshurst.
Also with the family were 2 lodgers, 60 year old Thomas Akehurst
who was an agricultural labourer and 13 year old George Akehurst
who was a shoe boy.
In 1871 the couple and their daughter Esther were still living at
Crabtree in Cowfold and they were both said to be 79 years old.
John was a labourer from Cowfold and Charlotte was from Billingshurst.
Also with them was 54 year old boarder and nurse, Elizabeth

Job Moore was baptised on 24 November 1824 in Cowfold.
Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register and he was a
labourer. He was a 26 year old agricultural labourer in 1851.
Moses Moore was baptised on 19 March 1826 in Cowfold.
The baptism register noted his father was a labourer. He was a 25
year old agricultural labourer in 1851.
Daniel Moore was baptised on 9 March 1828 in
Cowfold, at which time his father was a labourer. He was 14
years old in 1841.
Hester Moore was baptised on 8 November 1829 in
Cowfold, at which time her father was a labourer. She was 11
years old in 1841. When the 1851 census was recorded,
Esther Moore was 21 years old. In 1861 she was 31 years old an living with
her parents. It was noted in the census that she was an
imbecile from birth. The 1871 census recorded she was 40 years
old. By the time of the 1881 census Esther was 49 years old and
living at the Cuckfield Union workhouse and the census noted she was an
Allen Moore was baptised on 27 May 1832 in Cowfold,
at which time his father was a labourer. He was 9 years old in
1841. In 1851 he was an 18 year old agricultural labourer.
