Samuel MOON (1790-?)

and Elizabeth ROBERTS (c1791-?)

Samuel Moon and Elizabeth Roberts married on 14 March 1813 at St. Dunstan's parish church in Mayfield, Sussex.  They were both then of Mayfield.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Samuel Moon was baptised on 8 August 1790 at St. Margaret's parish church in Buxted, Sussex.  He was the son of Samuel Moon and Elizabeth Emery who had married on 2 October 1788 in Mayfield, Sussex, when they were both then said to be of Mayfield.

Elizabeth Roberts was born about 1791 in Warbleton, Sussex.  When the 1861 census was recorded, Elizabeth Moon was a 70 year old widow in receipt of parish relief and a visitor in the household of Henry Barham and his wife Frances.  She may have been born on 2 July and baptised on 8 August 1790 in Warbleton and have been the daughter of William Roberts and Sarah Huggat.  However, there was another Roberts couple in Warbleton at that time, namely Henry Roberts and Ann Harmer, who seem to have had 3 daughters named Elizabeth baptised on 12 February 1791, 2 March 1792 and 3 March 1793.

Samuel Moon and Elizabeth Roberts had 10 known children:

1. Frederick Moon was baptised on 3 October 1813 in Mayfield.

2. John Roberts Moon was baptised on 21 May 1815 in Mayfield.

   John married Eliza Mitchell by banns on 16 April 1836 at St. Denys parish church in Rotherfield, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Rotherfield.  The witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Mitchell and Jemima Mitchell.

   Eliza was born on 13 August 1819 and baptised on 20 September 1819 at the Independent Chapel in Heathfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Richard Mitchell and Jemima Balcomb.

   John and Eliza had the following children:

   1. Harriett Moon was baptised on 4 September 1836 in Rotherfield.

   2. Annesley Moon was born on 8 December 1838 and baptised on 27 January 1839 in Rotherfield.

   3. Naomi Moon was born on 7 January 1841 in Rotherfield and baptised there on 6 June 1847.

   4. James John Moon was born on 11 October 1842 in Rotherfield.  He was baptised on 6 June 1847 in Rotherfield.

      James John married Sarah Jane Norman on 28 October 1867 in Rotherfield.

      Sarah Jane was baptised on 16 June 1850 in Waldron, Sussex and was the daughter of William Norman and Charlotte.

      When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in Golden Green in Hadlow, Kent and James was then a loader.  Also living with them was Sarah's brother Charles Edwin Norman who was a 20 year old agricultural labourer.  They had the following children:

      1. Edwin Moon was born on 30 April and baptised on 13 June 1869 in Rotherfield.  He was an 11 year old scholar in 1881.

      2. Bertha Moon was born about 1872 in Rotherfield.  She was a 9 year old scholar in 1881.

      3. Robert Vincent Moon was born on 17 February and baptised on 12 April 1874 in Rotherfield.  He was a 7 year old scholar in 1881.  His place of birth was recorded as Capel, Kent in the 1881 census.

      4. William John Moon was born in about 1877 in Capel.  He was a 4 year old scholar in 1881.

      5. James William Moon was born about 1879 in Tudeley, Kent.

   5. Jemima Moon was born on 23 February 1845 at Treabuless in Rotherfield and baptised on 6 April 1845.  She died after 1891.  Jemima married Ebenezer John Manktelow on 14 January 1865 at St. Denys in Rotherfield.  He was born on 11 April 1840 in Wadhurst, Sussex and died after 1891.  He was the son of James Manktelow (1808-?) and Elizabeth (possibly Elizabeth Mewett).  They had the following children:

      1. Sarah Ada Manktelow was born in Ticehurst, Sussex and baptised on 9 July 1865 in Rotherfield..  She married Walter Coomber.  He was born about 1860 and died in about 1895.  Sarah then married Frank May.

      2. Elizabeth Manktelow was born in 1867.  She married William Andrew Underwood in 1891 in Rotherfield.

      3. Fanny Dora Manktelow was born on 27 July 1869 in Ticehurst and baptised on 14 August 1870 in Rotherfield.  She died after 1891.  Fanny married George Hall in 1894 in Rotherfield.

      4. Ebenezer Manktelow was born on 15 February and baptised 11 February 1872 in Rotherfield.

      5. George William Manktelow was born on 15 February and baptised on 12 April 1874 in Rotherfield.  He died after 1891.

      6. Jabez Manktelow was born on 15 July 1879 in Town Row, Rotherfield.  He died in about 1938.  Jabez married Kate Elizabeth Holder.  She was born on 31 May 1884 and died in 1972 in East Grinstead, Sussex.

      7. Earnest Manktelow was born in 1882.  He died after 1905.

   6. Eliza Moon was born on 11 November and baptised on 6 December 1846 in Rotherfield.  She married Henry Sales on 28 October 1865 in St. Denys, Rotherfield.  He was born on 20 August and baptised on 2 October 1842 in Rotherfield and was the son of Jesse Sales and Philadelphia Paige.  When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in Town Row Green in Rotherfield and Henry was an agricultural labourer.  They had the following children:

      1. Sarah Sales was baptised on 11 March 1866 in Rotherfield.  In 1881 she was a nursemaid out of service.

      2. Philadelphia Sales was born on 14 November 1869 and baptised on 9 January 1870 in Rotherfield.  She was a scholar in 1881.

      3. Jesse Sales was born on 9 December 1872 and baptised on 12 January 1873 in Rotherfield.  He was a scholar in 1881.

      4. Henry Sales was baptised on 9 April 1876 in Rotherfield.  He was a scholar in 1881.

      5. William Sales was born on 12 April and baptised on 13 July 1879 in Rotherfield.  He died on 26 April 1954.  William married Elsie Maria Harman on 6 June 1904 in Rotherfield.  She was born on 27 November 1881 and baptised on 12 February 1882 in Rotherfield.  Elsie was the daughter of Samuel Harman (1856-1895) and Sarah Edith Kent (1858-1949).  She died in August 1952 in Rotherfield.

      6. Samuel John Sales was born on 31 December 1882 and baptised on 8 April 1883 in Rotherfield.

      7. Richard George Sales was born on 13 September 1885 and baptised on 13 June 1886 in Rotherfield.

   7. Sarah Moon was born on 6 August and baptised on 2 September 1849 in Rotherfield.

   8. Doris Moon or Dorcas Moon was born on 3 January and baptised on 6 April 1851 in Rotherfield.  She died on 24 August 1927 in Rotherfield.  She married Frank Harman on 4 April 1872 in Rotherfield.  He was born on 11 May and baptised on 6 July 1851 in Rotherfield and was the son of John Harman (1829-1917) and Rhoda Martin (1829-1907).  Frank died on 2 February 1926 in Rotherfield.  When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in Town Row in Rotherfield and Frank was a bricklayer journeyman and a beer house keeper.  They had the following children:

      1. Owen Thomas Harman was born on 2 July and baptised on 8 September 1872 in Rotherfield.  He died on 9 February 1942 at 1 Ferndale Cottage in Rotherfield.  He was an 8 year old scholar in 1881.  Owen married Charlotte Annie Steyning in 1895.  She was born 1871 in Newhaven, Sussex

      2. Maria Harman was born on 14 July and baptised on 3 July 1874 in Rotherfield.  She may have died young as she was not living with her parents when the 1881 census was recorded

      3. Rhoda Elizabeth Harman was born on 1 July and baptised on 8 August 1875 in Rotherfield.  She died on 6 April 1900 in Rotherfield.  She was a 5 year old scholar in 1881.

      4. Doris Harman was born on 29 October and baptised on 9 December 1877 in Rotherfield.  She died on 21 March 1896 in Rotherfield.

      5. Frank Herbert Harman was baptised on 11 January 1880 in Rotherfield.  He died on 11 April 1880.

      6. Annie Harman was born on 26 March and baptised on 8 May 1881 in Rotherfield.  She was 1 week old when the 1881 census was recorded.  She died on 30 March 1899 in Rotherfield.

      7. Walter Harman known as Bob, was born on 31 August 1883 at Packhams Hill in Rotherfield and baptised in the parish church on 11 November 1883.  He died in 1942 in Shernfold Meadow Cottage, Frant, Sussex.  He married Ellen Sophia Groombridge on 25 August 1906 in Rotherfield.

      8. Herbert Harman was born on 13 October and baptised on 13 December 1885 in Rotherfield.  He died there in 1920.  Herbert married Mary Pope in 1919.

      9. Frederick Edwin Harman was born on 12 November 1887 at Packhams Hill and baptised in Rotherfield on 12 February 1888.  He died in 1938 in Rotherfield.  Frederick married Hetty Agnes Burchett in 1926.  She was born in 1889 and died in 1970.

      10. Luther Harman was born on 24 March 1890 in Town Row, Rotherfield and baptised in parish church on 11 May 1890.  He died on 24 March 1935 in Rother.  Luther married Elsie Minns.  She was born in 1890 in Rotherfield and died there in Town Row on 23 November 1958.

      11. James Sydney Harman was born on 3 December 1892 and baptised on 12 February 1893 in Rotherfield.  He died on 19 April 1979 at 6 The Ridge in Groombridge, Kent.  James married Lily Florence Pooley on 20 January 1923 at St. Michael and All Angels church in Mark Cross, Rotherfield.  She was born in Mayfield in 1892 and died at 6 The Ridge in 1973.

      12. Elsie Harman was born on 22 December 1896 and baptised on 4 April 1897 in Rotherfield.  She died on 27 May 1941 at Corner Cottage in Rotherfield.  She married John Joseph Coomber on 3 November 1919 in Rotherfield.  He was born about 1895.

   9. Edwin Moon was baptised on 7 May 1854 in Rotherfield.

   10. Thomas Richard Moon was baptised on 12 April 1857 in Rotherfield.

3. Eliza Moon was baptised on 8 September 1816 in Mayfield

4. Charles Moon was born on 25 February and baptised on 20 April 1818 in Mayfield.

5. Elizabeth Moon was born on 15 December 1819 and baptised on 12 March 1820 in Mayfield

6. Philadelphia Moon was born on 17 October and baptised on 25 November 1821 in Mayfield.

   Philadelphia married Joshua Dann on 19 November 1843 at St. Marks parish church in Hadlow Down, Sussex.

   Joshua was born on 9 December 1812 and baptised on 7 March 1813 in Rotherfield, and was the son of Thomas Dann and Philadelphia Norman.  At the time of the 1851 census the family were living at Woodside in Rotherfield and Joshua was an agricultural labourer.

   Joshua and Philadelphia had the following children:

   1. Elizabeth Dann was born on 18 January and baptised on 31 March 1844 in Rotherfield.

   2. Eliza Dann was born on 22 March and baptised on 4 April 1845 in Rotherfield.

   3. Sarah Dann was born on 18 December 1846 and baptised on 7 March 1847 in Rotherfield.

   4. Thomas Dann was born on 14 July and baptised on 7 October 1849 in Rotherfield.

   5. Ann Georgina Dann was baptised on 7 March 1852 in Rotherfield.  She married John Miles on 22 October 1870 in Rotherfield.  He was born in 1844 in Wadhurst and was the son of John Miles (1822-?) and Mary.

   6. Philadelphia Dann was baptised on 4 June 1854 in Rotherfield.  She married Edwin Thomas Crawley.

   7. Dinah Dann was baptised on 1 June 1856 in Rotherfield.

7. George Moon was born on 18 September and baptised on 20 October 1823 in Rotherfield.  He married Eleanor in about 1851.  She was born in Buxted in about 1831.

8. Frances Moon was born on 10 January and baptised on 26 February 1826 in Rotherfield.  She married Henry Barham on 2 April 1849 at St. Albans parish church in Frant, Sussex.  Henry was born in Wadhurst in 1822 and was the son of Nicholas Barham (1785-1587) and Elizabeth Moren (1791-1864).

9. Sarah Moon was born on 23 March and baptised on 27 April 1828 in Rotherfield.  She married twice, firstly to George Fry on 11 April 1847 at St. Denys parish church in Rotherfield.  George was born about 1822 in Hever, Kent.  She then married James Earl in 1870.  He was born about 1828 in Rotherfield.

10. Alfred Moon was born on 17 June/July and baptised on 8 August 1830 in Rotherfield.

For the moment I don't know if the following family is related to the above.

John Moon and Rhoda married sometime before or about 1830.

John was born about 1811 in Rotherfield.

Rhoda was born about 1813 in Goudhurst, Kent.

In 1851 the couple and 8 children were living at O??snash in Rotherfield and John was a farmer of 100 acres employing 3 labourers.  Also with them on census night was unmarried 22 year old servant and agricultural labourer, John Parker.  By 1861, Rhoda was a widow and farmer living at the same property along with 7 children and 19 year old servant and farm servant, Edwin Best.

John and Rhoda had the following children:

1. Charles Moon was born on 18 November 1830 in Horsmondon, Kent and baptised there on 8 July 1837..  In 1861 he was a 30 year old wheelwright living with his mother and younger siblings.

2. John Moon was born on 1 September 1833 in Horsmondon and baptised there on 8 July 1837.  He was 17 years old in 1851 and living at home.

3. William Moon was born on 12 June 1835 in Horsmondon and baptised there on 8 July 1837.  He was a 15 years old in 1851.  In 1861 he was a 26 year old widower living with his mother.

4. Sarah Moon was born in Rotherfield, as per the census, on 15 November 1836 and baptised on 8 July 1837 in Horsmondon.  She was a 14 year old scholar in 1851.

5. Ann Moon was baptised on 29 December 1839 in Rotherfield.  In 1851 she was an 11 year old scholar.

6. Stephen Moon was born about 1843 in Rotherfield.  In 1851 he was an 8 year old scholar.

7. Mary Moon was born about 1845 in Rotherfield.  She was 6 years old in 1851.  In 1861 she was 17 years old and living at home.

8. Rhoda Moon was born about 1847 in Rotherfield.  She was 4 years old in 1851.

9. Amos Moon was born about 1849 in Rotherfield.  At the time of the 1851 census he was 2 years old.  In 1861 he was 12 years old.

10. Naomi Moon was born in the fourth quarter of 1851 in Rotherfield.  She was 10 years old when the 1861 census was recorded.  She died aged 20 years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1872 in the Uckfield registration district.

    Naomi married Albert Packham on 8 October 1870 in Rotherfield.

    Albert was born about 1841-4 in Wadhurst, and was the son of Samuel Packham.  In 1851 he was 10 years old and living with his parents, Samuel and Eliza, and 8 year old sister, Elizabeth, at Cheesmans in Wadhurst.  His father was then a farmer of 30 acres employing 1 labourer and 1 boy.

    When the 1871 census was recorded the couple and their young son were living with Albert's 65 year old widower father at Frights in Rotherfield.  Samuel was then a farmer of 106 acres employing 3 labourer.  Albert's 25 year old unmarried sister, Elizabeth Packham was also part of the household.  By 1881 Albert was a 38 year old widower living with his 76 year old father, sister Elizabeth and 17 year old servant, Fanny Wickens.

    Albert and Naomi had the following son:

    1. Samuel John Packham was born in the fourth quarter of 1870 in Rotherfield.  He was 6 months old when the 1871 census was recorded.  He died aged 1 year and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1872 in the Uckfield registration district.

11. Elizabeth Moon was born about 1853 in Rotherfield.  In 1861 she was 8 years old.
