Henry MONK (1618-1658)

and Mary (c1620-1697)

Henry Monk and possibly Mary were my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may have married in about 1645 in or near Heathfield, Sussex.  No possible marriage has been found for them in the Sussex marriage index, nor in the Heathfield parish register.

Henry Monke may have been baptised on 18 January 1617/8 in Heathfield, Sussex and have been the son of John Monke.  Henry was probably buried on 14 August 1658 in Heathfield.

A John Munke married Priscilla Durrant on 7 February 1614/5 in Heathfield.  Were they Henry's parents?  John may have previously married Jane Jorden on 9 May 1608 in Heathfield.  Jane was buried on 27 November 1613 and the burial register noted that she was the wife of John Moonke, junior, therefore, I assume he was the son of John.  John was also the father of Joane Moonke who was baptised on 16 August 1613 in Heathfield.

A John Monke was buried in Heathfield on 19 March 1617/8 and the burial register noted that he was a collier.  Was this Henry's father or perhaps his grandfather?  John left a will which was proved at Lewes on 21 May 1618 (I haven't yet read his will).

A John Monke married Margaret Hosmar on 4 November 1593 in Heathfield.  Marget Monke widow wife of Jhon Monke was buried on 23 April 1630 in Heathfield.  Was Margaret or Priscilla married to the John who died in 1618?  Hopefully his will will mention his wife.

Might Henry's wife have been Mary?  They did name their only known daughter Mary.  A Mary Munke married Thomas Pankerst on 7 January 1661/2 in Heathfield.  Unfortunately the marriage register gives no further information.  Might Thomas have previously married Elizabeth Monke on 16 February 1628/9 in Heathfield?  And might Elizabeth have been the sister or half-sister of Henry?  A Thomas Pankherst was buried on 11 July 1662 in Heathfield and widow Pankherst was buried there on 25 March 1665.  Thomas the posthumous son of Thomas Pankhurst was baptised on 29 December 1662 in Heathfield.  A Mary Pankerst married Alexander Bissenden on 23 February 1668/9 in Heathfield, but again no further information was given in the marriage register.  Alexander was probably buried in Heathfield on 3 March 1687 and "the old widow Bissenden" was buried there on 4 May 1697.  Alexander Bissenden was baptised in Heathfield on 18 June 1626, the son of John Bissenden and possibly Susan Rainsford.

I think Henry's wife was Mary and that she married Thomas in 1662, then Alexander in 1669, and that she died in 1697.  If she was at the most 47ish when Thomas was born in 1662, then she must have been born after 1615.... but I could be wrong.

Henry Monk and Mary had 4 known children:

  1. John Monke was baptised on 12 April 1646 in Heathfield.  He was buried on 2 January 1724/5 in Heathfield.  The burial register recorded that he was John Monk, senior.  John was a cooper of Heathfield when he made his will on 20 May 1717.

John married Mary Gorlay on 16 June 1678 in Burwash, Sussex.

Mary may have been buried on 23 January 1725/6 in Heathfield.  The burial register records that Mary Monk, widow was buried.  She did have a sister-in-law also named Mary Monk who was also a widow at that time.

John and Mary had 4 known children:

    1. Mary Monk was baptised on 4 November 1679 in Heathfield.  Did she, or her cousin Mary Monk born in 1673, marry Thomas Dunk on 2 February 1695/6 in Heathfield?  Mary was then of Heathfield and Thomas of Burwash.

    2. Elizabeth Monk was baptised on 26 September 1682 in Heathfield.

    3. John Monk was baptised on 23 February 1685/6 in Heathfield.  An unnamed child of John Monke was buried on 12 March 1685/6 in Heathfield.  However, when John the elder died in 1725 he was described as senior, therefore, I assume he had a son John alive at that point.  A John Monk was buried on 19 June 1748 in Heathfield, but another John Monk was baptised on 21 January 1676/7 in Heathfield, the son of Stephen Monk.

    4. Elizabeth Monk was baptised on 29 January 1689/90 in Heathfield.  She was baptised on the same day as her cousin, Stephen Monk.

  2. Stephen Munke, my 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 28 January 1648/9 in Heathfield.  He married Mary French in 1672.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Mary Munke was baptised on 11 September 1653 in Heathfield.

  4. William Muncke was born on 12 December 1655 in Heathfield.

William may have married Elizabeth Callis on 14 October 1679 in Heathfield.

Elizabeth Monk, widow was buried on 26 May 1735 in Heathfield.

The IGI records that a Henry Monk married Mildred Dane on 1 February 1626 in Heathfield - a transcript of the Heathfield register gives her name as Mildred Dawe.  This Henry may have been buried on 27 April 1632 in Heathfield, by the name of Henery Munke.

A Mildred Monk married John Walker on 7 June 1652 in Warbleton, Sussex, when she was a spinster and he a bachelor who were both of Warbleton.

Richard Munk was buried on 10 May 1647 in Heathfield.  He left a will in which he mentioned his eldest son Richard Munk who was under 21; daughter Elizabeth Munk under 21; son William Munk also under 21 who was to be brought up by Richard's brother-in-law William Pankerst.

Richard Monke married Margery Norris on 15 January 1628/9 in Heathfield.

Richard Monk was the father of:

  1. Richard Monke was baptised on 2 May 1630 in Heathfield.

  2. Elizabeth Muncke was baptised on 22 April 1633 in Heathfield.

  3. Richard Mounck was baptised on 13 December 1642 in Heathfield.  (Should this have been William?)
