My Mitchell Ancestors
I have 5 (possibly 6) Mitchell lines, all from about the same area of mid
Sussex and all bar one on my mother's side of the family. The fifth line is
still very speculative but could be via Martha Mitchel who married Edward Tullett in 1691 in
Ifield, Sussex. They may have been the parents of
Peter Toolet (?-1748) who married
Elizabeth Gratwick (c1705-1786) in 1726 in Cowfold, Sussex.
Peter and Elizabeth had a daughter-in-law named
Elizabeth Mitchell -
see line one below - who was my 5x Great Grandmother.
Another 5x Great Grandmother - see line two below - was
Mary Mitchell
(c1759-1841) who married
Samuel Woolgar (1755-1839) in 1780 in
Henfield, Sussex. She died aged 81 years on 11 March 1841 in Henfield.
Therefore, she may have been born between about April 1759 and March 1760,
but did her family really know how old she was? So far I have found 3
possible baptisms for her:
 |
Mary Mitchell baptised 21 November 1759 in
Bolney, Sussex, daughter of Francis Mitchell and Anne. |
 |
Mary Mitchell baptised 14 September 1760 in
Shipley, Sussex, daughter of William Mitchell and Sarah Fist. |
 |
Mary Mitchell baptised 5 February 1761 in
Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, daughter of William Mitchell and
Elizabeth Morley. |
Samuel and Mary had 9 known children, 5 sons and 4 daughters. None
of the sons were named Francis and none of the daughters named Anne, so
could this mean Mary was not the one born in 1759? Their first born
was named William - Samuel's parents were Stephen and Mary - and 2 of
their daughters were named Sarah (the first died as an infant). So
could this mean that Mary was born in 1760? Their 2 other daughters
were named Mary and Catherine and they did name a son Stephen.
Lines three and four go back to Walter Mitchell (c1580-1641) who was
both my 9x and 10x Great Grandfather, who was from Bolney, Sussex.
I may also have a 7x Great Grandmother,
Ann
Mitchell who married
Thomas Woolven in 1716 in West Grinstead.
