Michael MERRYAM (c1620-1681)

and Dorcas (?-1662)

and Barbara SHELLY (?-1669)

Michael Merryam and Dorcas married before or about 1648.  No possible marriage has been found for them in the Sussex or Surrey marriage indexes.  As Micah Meriam he may next have married Barbara Shelly on 9 September 1663 in Bolney, Sussex.  They were both then said to be of Horsham, Sussex.

Michael Merryam's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Mica Meriam had 6 hearths when the 1662 Hearth Tax Assessment was made.  He was then of Scarfox in the Borough of Horsham and his was the only Meriam (and variant) family to be assessed in the Rape of Bramber.  He was buried as Micha Merryam on 10 January 1681 at St. Mary's in Horsham.

Dorcas's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Dorcas Myrriam was buried on 2 September 1662 at St. Mary's in Horsham.

Barbara Shelly's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 11 August 1669 in Horsham.

Michael's name does not appear in the list of those who did, nor those who did not, sign the 1641/2 Protestation Return in Horsham.

Michael Merryam and Dorcas had 5 known children:

  1. Henry Merryam was born on 31 May 1648 and baptised on 11 June 1648 in Horsham, Sussex.  He may have married Mary before or about 1681.  Or he may have been buried as a child on 24 April 1656 in Horsham, by the name of Henry Merryam.

  2. Barbora Meryam was born on 24 March 1650/1 and baptised on 30 March 1651 in Horsham.  As Barbara Merryam she married John Woodgate on 13 December 1670 in Horsham.  She was a spinster and they were both of Horsham.  In the 1662 Hearth Tax Assessment there were 4 Woodgate households in the South Street district of the Borough of Horsham.

  3. Margret Merryam was baptised on 11 December 1653 in Horsham and buried there on 22 December 1653.

  4. Dorcus Merryman was born on 14 May 1655 and baptised on 24 May 1655 in Horsham.  She was buried as a child in Horsham on 31 May 1658, and her name was then recorded as Dorcus Merryam.

  5. Mary Merryam was baptised on 27 September 1657 in Horsham.

Michael Miriam and Anne had the following child:

  1. Henry Miriam was baptised on 9 June 1672 in Ifield.

Might the following also have been part of the above family:

  1. Michael Miriam married Joan Diddellsfold on 14 November 1677 in Cranley, Surrey.

Might the following have been a sibling of Michael's:

  1. Matthew Merryman married Elizabeth Milles on 6 October 1656 in Horsham.  He was a carrier and she a widow.  She may have been buried on 17 July 1668 in Horsham.

Matthew may have previously had a relationship with Elizabeth Ellis and they had the following child:

    1. Mathew Ellis or Meryam was born on 30 January 1653/4 and baptised on 9 March 1653/4 in Horsham.  As Matthew Miriam might he have married Joan before or about 1689?

  2. Ann Merryam married William Shrawley on 29 July 1662 in Horsham.  She was a single woman of Horsham and he a gent of St. Margaret's parish in New Fish Street, London.
