James MILLS (1779-1862)

and Charlotte BROOKS (1780-1862)

St. Mary's, Pulborough, 1906 - from Mills and Charlotte Brookes were my 4x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 12 September 1801 at the parish church of St. Mary's in Pulborough, Sussex.  At the time of their marriage James was of Billingshurst and Charlotte of Pulborough.  The witnesses were Frances Barnes and James Collins.  Both James and Charlotte made their X marks.  (Frances was Charlotte’s sister.)

James Mills was born on 22 March 1779 in Wiggonholt, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 74 Richard Mills (1740-?) and 5 74 Susanna Sears (1745-1810).  The following is my transcript of an entry in the Wiggonholt Parish Register:

John Lawrence of the Parish of Cold Waltham, and Anne Whicker of the Parish of Storrington Sussex have made oath before me this 8th day of April 1798, that James son of Richard and Susanna Mills was christen’d at Wiggonholt Church sometime in the month of March 1779; and that they were sponsors to the said James.  Joseph Dixon, Curate.  Susanna Mills, mother of the said James declares that he was born 22nd March 1779 and that the registering of his name is ?.... ? has been omitted.  J. Dixon”.

James died on 10 January 1862 and was buried on 15 January 1862 in Pulborough.  His death certificate records he died aged 82 years and 9 months and he was a farm labourer.  His cause of death was natural decay and the informant was Jane Wedge of Pulborough, present at the death.  (Jane was probably, nee Coot, wife of John Wedge, who was James’s Grandson.)

Charlotte Brookes was baptised on 2 February 1780 in Pulborough.  She was the daughter of 5 84 John Brooks (1744-1807) and 5 84 Catherine Redford (1745-1816).  Charlotte died on 17 September 1862 in Pulborough and was buried there on 18 September 1862.  Her death certificate records that she was 82 years and 9 months and the widow of James Mills a farm labourer.  Her cause of death was senile decay and the informant was Sarah Wedge of Pulborough, present at the death.  Before her marriage, Charlotte had an illegitimate son.

Charlotte Brooks and unknown had 1 known child:

  1. Charles Carpenter Brooks was baptised on 5 May 1799 in Pulborough.  In 1822 he was convicted of theft and transported.

In 1793 an Edward Carpenter was a witness to the marriage of Thomas Ayling and Sarah Muggeridge in Pulborough.

James Mills and Charlotte Brooks had 5 known children:

  1. Mary Mills was baptised on 3 January 1802 in Pulborough.

  2. Jane Mills was baptised on 18 September 1803 in Pulborough.

Jane may have married married Robert Billingshurst by banns on 14 February 1825 in Pulborough.  They were both of Pulborough and the witnesses were Ann Weedon and Sarah Mills.  However, there was also a widow Jane Mills.

  3. Charlotte Mills was baptised on 2 February 1806 in Pulborough.  She married William Libbeter in 1827.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Hester Mills was baptised on 19 April 1807 in Pulborough and buried there on 10 September 1808.

  5. Sarah Mills, my 3x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 11 December 1808 in Pulborough.  She married 5 63 William Wedge in 1833.  (They have their own page.)

The 1841, 1851 and 1861 census records that James and Charlotte Mills were living at Pidgeons Gate, Pulborough, either with or next door to their daughter Sarah married to William Wedge and their family.
