John MIDHURST (c1625-?)
and Elizabeth BURTENSHAW (1624-?)

John Midhurst
and Elizabeth
Burtenshaw were, I believe, my 9x Great Grandparents. They
married on 18 April 1649 in Cowfold, Sussex.
John Midhurst’s
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me. He or his son was
buried in Henfield on 20 July 1681 as John Medhurst.
Was he baptised on 28 July 1622 in Burwash, Sussex, the son of
Edmond Midhurst and Deborah Newington?
However, he didn't give these names to any of his children, and Burwash to
Cowfold is a fair distance. He did name his second son Richard and
there was a John Medhurst who had a son named Richard
baptised in Withyham, Sussex in 1625.
Elizabeth
Burtenshaw was baptised on 1 July 1624 in Cowfold. She was the
daughter of Thomas Burtenshaw and possibly Joan
Pockney (they married on 16 June 1606 in Henfield). She may
have been the Elizabeth Midhurst who was buried on 26
August 1712 in Henfield.
On 10 April 1652, John Midhurst a ploughmaker of Henfield,
took on 9 year old Elizabeth Killicke as an apprentice.
In February 1670, John Midhurst of Henfield gave a 3 penny
donation to the redemption of poor Christian captives out of Turkish slavery
in Algiers. In total, Henfield parishioners raise £5.
John Midhurst and
Elizabeth Burtenshaw had 8 known children:
-
Susan Medhurst was born on 4 May
1650 and baptised on 28 May 1650 in Henfield. The baptism register
named her parents as John and Elizabeth. She died on the last day
of January and was buried on the first day of February 1650/1 in
Henfield.
-
John Medhurst was born 12 September 1651 and baptised on

Thomas
married Mary Pacquet by banns on 25 April 1689 in Henfield.
They were both then of Henfield.
Mary Midhurst was buried in woollen only on 27 January
1689/90 in Henfield.
Thomas and Mary had the following son:
-
Thomas Midhurst was buried in woollen only on 1
February 1689/90 in Henfield.
A marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 8 December
1691 to Thomas Medhurst of Henfield and Ann
Forster spinster of Henfield.
On 8 August 1693 a Thomas Midhurst of New Shoreham took
on Dennis Stonham as a housewifery apprentice.
-
Ann
Midhurst, my possible 8x Great
Grandmother,
was baptised on 5 January 1669/70 in Henfield. She married

Steel in 1697. (They have their own page.)
