Thomas MERRITT (1769-?)

and Mary LELIOTT (1772-?)

Thomas Merreat and Mary Liliot married by banns on 19 January 1795 at the parish church of St. Mary's in Wiston, Sussex.  Thomas was of Wiston and Mary of Bramber.  They both made their X marks.  The witnesses to their marriage were Samuel Liliot (mark) and Richard Hollingdale (signed).  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Mary was the sister of my 4x Great Grandmother, Naomi Lelliott.)

Thomas Merritt was baptised on 25 June 1769 in Wiston.  He was the son of Edward Merritt and Mary Dining.

Mary Leliott was baptised on 20 December 1772 in Wiston.  She was the daughter of Samuel Lillyot (1748-1817) and Elizabeth Serjeant (1748-?).  Before her marriage she had an illegitimate daughter.

Unknown and Mary Liliot had 1 known daughter:

1. Amy Liliot was baptised on 9 September 1792 in Wiston.

Thomas Merreat and Mary Liliot had 7 known children:

1. Martha Merreat was baptised on 2 August 1795 in Wiston.

   Martha married Richard Bourne on 11 July 1815 in Washington.

2. Thomas Merrit was baptised on 6 January 1799 in Wiston.

   Thomas married Elizabeth Searle on 13 October 1823 in Wiston.

   Thomas and Elizabeth had the following children:

   1. Mary Merritt was born about 1825 in Ashington.

   2. Ann Merritt was born about 1826

   3. Peter Merritt was born about 1829 in Ashington.

   4. Samuel Merritt was born about 1831 in Ashington.  He may have died in 1902.

      Samuel married Mary Clayton.

      Samuel and Mary had the following children:

      1. Frederick Merritt

      2. Edward Merritt

   5. William Merritt was born about 1833 in Washington.

      William married Sarah Walder on 15 November 1859 in Wiston.

      William and Sarah had the following children:

      1. Walter Merritt was born about 1860 in Ashington.  He married Emma Kate C. James.

      2. Frederick Merritt was born about 1862 in Washington.

   6. Harriett Merritt was born about 1835 in Ashington.

   7. Thomas Merritt was born about 1838 in Ashington.

   8. Daniel Merritt was born about 1840 in Ashington.

   9. Elizbaeth Merritt was born about 1842 in Ashington.

   10. Ruth Merritt was born aout 1845 in Ashington.

3. Daniel Merrit was baptised on 28 September 1800 in Wiston.  He married Sarah Mercer in 1821.  (They have their own page.)

4. Mary Merrit was baptised on 2 January 1803 in Wiston.  She died in 1879.

   Mary married John Hawkins on 14 June 1824 in Washington.

   John and Mary had the following children:

   1. Agnes Hawkins

   2. Peter Hawkins

   3. Matilda Hawkins

   4. Frank Hawkins

   5. John Hawkins

   6. Harriet Hawkins

   7. George Hawkins

5. Moses Merritt was born about 1805 in Washington, as per the 1851 census, or Wiston, as per the 1861 census.  He died in 1883 in Findon.

   Moses married twice, firstly to Eliza Dale by banns on 21 June 1828 in Washington.

   Eliza was born about 1808 and died in 1839.

   When the 1841 census was recorded Moses and his 5 children were living in the Thakeham workhouse.

   Moses and Eliza had the following children:

   1. George Merritt was born about 1828.  He was 13 years old in 1841.

   2. Ellis Merritt was born about 1830.  In 1841 he was 11 years old.

   3. James Merritt was born about 1832.  He was 9 years old in 1841.

   4. Ellen Merritt was baptised on 3 August 1834 in Wiston.  She died in 1889.  In 1841 she was 7 years old.  She was 16 years old in 1851.  Ellen married James Lillywhite.

   5. Walter Merritt was baptised on 21 February 1836 in Wiston.  He died in 1854.  In 1841 he was 5 years old.  He was 15 years old in 1851.

   6. William Merritt was baptised on 28 September 1839 in Warminghurst.

   Moses next married Mary Goodger on 10 October 1841 in Warminghurst, Sussex.

   Mary was born about 1814 and died in 1893.

   When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living in Washington.  Moses was then a 46 year old agricultural labourer.  Mary was 37 years old and then gave her place of birth as Sullington.  In 1861, Moses was still an agricultural labourer and the family were living at North End in Findon, Sussex.  Mary's place of birth was then recorded as Thakeham and she was 47 years old.

   Moses and Mary had the following children:

   1. Sarah Ann Merritt was born about 1844 in Washington.  She was 7 years old in 1851.  In 1861 she was 17 years old and the eldest of her siblings living at home.  Sarah Ann maried John Knight on 2 November 1863 in Findon.

   2. Robert Merritt was born about 1847 in Washington.  He was 4 years old in 1851.  In 1861 he was a 14 year old ploughboy.

      Robert married twice, firstly to Mary Ann Haglor in the fourth quarter of 1869 in the Thakeham registration district.  And then to Eliza Tidey, widow, nee Eliza Lelliott in the fourth quarter of 1879 in the East Preston registration district.

      Eliza was baptised on 6 June 1841 in Washington and was the daughter of Richard Lelliott (1799-1868) and Mary Ann Realf (1799-1869).

      When the 1881 census was recorded Robert and his second wife were living at 93 Clifton Road in Broadwater, Sussex.  He was then a 35 year old bricklayers labourer.

      Robert and Mary Ann had 2 known children:

      1. James Merritt was born about 1870 in Findon, Sussex.  In 1881 he was an 11 year old scholar.

      2. Emma Merritt was born about 1873 in Findon.  She was an 8 year old scholar in 1881.  In 1891 she was 18 years old and living at home where she was said to be a mother's help.

      Robert and Eliza had 1 known daughter:

      1. Annie Merritt was born about 1880 in Worthing, Sussex.  She was a year old in 1881.  In 1891 she was an 11 year old scholar.

   3. John Frederick Merritt was born about 1849 in Washington.  In 1851 he was 2 years old.  He was a 12 year old ploughboy in 1861.  John married Elizabeth Fuller.

   4. Henry Merritt was born about 1852 in Washington.  He was a 9 year old farmer's boy in 1861.  Henry married Mary Moulding on 25 September 1875 in North Stoke, Sussex

   5. Samuel Merritt was born about 1854 in Washington.  In 1861 he was a 7 year old scholar.  Samuel married Rose Gent on 28 December 1872 in Thakeham.

6. Peter Merritt was born about 1807 in Washington.  He died in 1875.

   Peter married Eleanor Hickox by banns on 15 July 1834 in Washington.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.

   When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living Washington.  Peter was then a 45 year old agricultural labourer.  Eleanor was 40 years old and gave her place of birth as Washington.

   Peter and Eleanor had the following children:

   1. Mary Merritt was baptised on 12 July 1835 in Washington.

      Mary married Walter Short.

      Walter was baptised on 13 May 1832 in West Chiltington and was the son of Samuel Short and Leah Wadey.

   2. Eliza Merritt was baptised on 11 December 1836 in Washington.  She was 14 years old in 1851.

      Eliza married Thomas Hoad in 1856.

      Thomas was born in 1833.

   3. Bridget Merritt was baptised on 19 August 1838 in Washington.  In 1851 she was 12 years old.

   4. Harry Merritt was baptised on 10 May 1840 in Washington.  He was 11 years old in 1851.

   5. George Merritt was baptised on 19 June 1842 in Washington.  In 1851 he was 8 years old.

   6. Charles Merritt was baptised on 28 May 1844 in Washington.  In 1851 he was 7 years old.

      Charles married Sarah Meeten on 10 September 1864 in Wiston.

      Sarah was born on 9 March 1844 and baptised on 14 April 1844 in Shipley.  She was the daughter of John Meeten and Elizabeth Worsfold.

      Charles and Sarah had the following children:

      1. William Merritt was born in 1867 in Washington.  He married Mary Pesterfield in 1890.

      2. Charles Merritt was born in 1870 in Washington.  He married Fanny Pesterfield in 1889.

      3. Elizabeth Merritt was born in 1873 in Washington.

      4. Mary Ann Merritt was born in 1875 in Washington.  She married Arthur Albert Figg in 1894.

      5. Sarah Jane Merritt was born in 1877 in Washington.

      6. Alice Merritt was born in 1879 in Washington.

      7. Lucy Merritt was born in 1880 in Washington.

   7. Peter Merritt was baptised on 6 December1846 in Washington.  He was 5 years old in 1851.

      Peter married Caroline Dean in 1871.

      Peter and Caroline had the following children:

      1. William Merritt

      2. Ellen Merritt

      3. Peter Merritt

      4. Thomas Merritt

      5. Annie Merritt

      6. George Merritt

      7. Caroline Merritt

   8. Elleanor Merritt was baptised on 11 February 1849 in Washington.  She was 2 years old in 1851.

      Elenaor married George Scutt in 1873.

      George and Eleanor had the following children:

      1. William Scutt

      2. George Scutt

      3. John Scutt

   9. Thomas Merritt was baptised on 4 March 1854 in Washington.

7. Samuel Merritt was born about 1809 in Washington.  He died aged 83 years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1891 in the Steyning registration district.

   As Samuel Merret he married Harriet Lulham by banns on 23 November 1834 in Botolphs, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor of Steyning and she was a spinster of Botolphs.

   Harriot was baptised on 11 September 1814 in Botlphs and was a twin daughter of John Lulham (1778-?) and Charlotte Waters (c1782-1824).  Her twin brother was Benjamin Lulham.  Harriett died at her home in Martins Row, Henfield, in 1903 and her daughter Harriett Henly was present.

   Samuel and Harriet had planned to go to Canada with the Petworth emigration, their names are listed but they did not go.  (Thanks to Anne Warren for finding this and for Harriet's year and place of death.)

   When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living in Washington and Samuel was a 42 year old blacksmith's labourer.  Harriet was then 36 years old and gave her place of birth as Botolphs.  In 1861 the family were living at School House in Washington and Samuel was a 52 year old blacksmith.  By 1871 the couple and their sons George and Benjamin were living in Henfield.  In 1881 the couple and their son Alfred were living in the High Street, Henfield.  The 1891 census records that 82 year old Samuel and 76 year old Harriett were living in London Road, Henfield along with their son Alfred.

   Samuel and Harriet had the following children:

   1. Thomas Merritt was baptised in March 1835 in Steyning and may have died young.  (Thanks to Anne Warren for finding this.)

   2. Samuel Merritt was born in 1837 in Beeding.  He was 13 years old in 1851.

      Samuel married Charity Vaughan on 24 April 1858 in Slaugham.

      Charity was born about 1837 and died in 1883.

      Samuel and Charity had the following children:

      1. Alfred Merritt

      2. Ann Merritt

      3. Sarh Merritt

      4. Samuel Merritt

      5. Charles Merritt

      6. George Merritt

      7. Edwin Merritt

      8. Harriett Merritt

   3. Charlotte Merrit was baptised on 8 September 1839 in Upper Beeding.  She died on 2 December 1920.  She was 11 years old in 1851.

      Charlotte married Walter Farrell on 23 May 1858 in Washington.

      Walter and Charlotte had the following children:

      1. Mary Farrell

      2. Harriet Farrell

      3. George Farrell

      4. Emily Farrell

      5. Alfred Farrell was born on 6 November 1869 and baptised on 28 November 1869 in Henfield.  He died on 28 February 1941.  Alfred married Bessie Etheridge on 16 November 1895.

   4. Mary Merritt was baptised on 19 December 1841 in Upper Beeding.  In 1851 she was 9 years old.

   5. Harriet Merrett was baptised on 31 March 1844 in Upper Beeding.  She was 7 yeas old in 1851.

   6. Eliza Merrett was baptised on 14 February 1847 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.

   7. George Merrett was born about 1849 in Washington.  (He was Anne Warren's great grandfather.)  At the time of the 1851 census he was 2 years old.  At the time of the 1851 census he was 2 years old.  In 1861 he was 12 years old and the eldest of his siblings living at home.  In 1871 he was an unmarried 22 year old seaman living at home with his parents.  George married Fanny Browning on 13 March 1875 in Henfield.

   8. Alfred Merritt was born about 1853 in Washington.  He was 8 years old in 1861.  In 1881 he was an umarried 29 year old agricultural labourer living at home.

   9. Benjamin Merritt was born about 1854 in Washington.  He was 7 years old in 1861.  In 1871 he was a 17 year old agricultural labourer.

   10. Fanny Merritt was born about 1857 in Washington.  In 1861 she was 4 years old.  She may have died when she was 10 years old.

   11. Emily Merritt was born about 1860 in Washington.  At the time of the 1861 census she was 1 year old.
