Thomas MERRITT
(1769-?)
and Mary LELIOTT (1772-?)


Thomas Merreat and Mary Liliot married by banns on 19 January
1795 at the parish church of St. Mary's in Wiston, Sussex. Thomas was of
Wiston and Mary of Bramber. They both made their X marks. The
witnesses to their marriage were Samuel Liliot (mark) and Richard
Hollingdale (signed). (They were not my direct ancestors.
Mary was the sister of my 4x Great Grandmother, Naomi Lelliott.)
Thomas Merritt was baptised on 25 June 1769 in Wiston. He was
the son of Edward Merritt and Mary Dining.
Mary Leliott was baptised on 20 December 1772 in Wiston. She
was the daughter of
Samuel
Lillyot (1748-1817) and
Elizabeth Serjeant (1748-?). Before her marriage she had an
illegitimate daughter.

Moses Merritt was born about 1805 in
Washington, as per the 1851 census, or Wiston, as per the 1861 census.
He died in 1883 in Findon.
Moses married twice, firstly to Eliza Dale by banns on 21 June 1828
in Washington.
Eliza was born about 1808 and died in 1839.
When the 1841 census was recorded Moses and his 5 children were living in
the Thakeham workhouse.
Moses and Eliza had the following children:

1841.

Ellis Merritt was born about 1830. In 1841 he was 11 years
old.

James Merritt was born about 1832. He was 9 years old in
1841.

died in 1889. In
1841 she was 7 years old. She was 16 years old in 1851.
Ellen married James Lillywhite.

He died in 1854.
In 1841 he was 5 years old. He was 15 years old in 1851.

Moses next married Mary Goodger on 10
October 1841 in Warminghurst, Sussex.
Mary was born about 1814 and died in 1893.
When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living in Washington.
Moses was then a 46 year old agricultural labourer. Mary was 37
years old and then gave her place of birth as Sullington. In 1861,
Moses was still an agricultural labourer and the family were living at
North End in Findon, Sussex. Mary's place of birth was then recorded
as Thakeham and she was 47 years old.
Moses and Mary had the following children:

Sarah Ann Merritt was born about 1844 in Washington. She
was 7 years old in 1851. In 1861 she was 17 years old and the
eldest of her siblings living at home. Sarah Ann maried
John Knight on 2 November 1863 in Findon.

Robert Merritt was born about 1847
in Washington. He was 4 years old in 1851. In 1861 he was a
14 year old ploughboy.
Robert married twice, firstly to Mary Ann Haglor in the fourth
quarter of 1869 in the Thakeham registration district. And then to
Eliza Tidey, widow, nee
Eliza Lelliott in the fourth quarter of 1879 in the East Preston
registration district.
Eliza was baptised on 6 June 1841 in Washington and was the daughter of
Richard Lelliott (1799-1868) and
Mary Ann Realf (1799-1869).
When the 1881 census was recorded Robert and his second wife were living
at 93 Clifton Road in Broadwater, Sussex. He was then a 35 year
old bricklayers labourer.
Robert and Mary Ann had 2 known children:

James Merritt was born about 1870 in Findon, Sussex. In
1881 he was an 11 year old scholar.

Emma Merritt was born about 1873 in Findon. She was an 8
year old scholar in 1881. In 1891 she was 18 years old and
living at home where she was said to be a mother's help.

She was a year old in 1881. In 1891 she was an 11 year old
scholar.

He died aged 83 years and his death was registered in the second quarter
of 1891 in the Steyning registration district.
As Samuel Merret he married
Harriet Lulham by banns on 23 November 1834 in
Botolphs, Sussex. He was then a bachelor of Steyning and she was a
spinster of Botolphs.

Harriot was baptised on 11 September 1814 in Botlphs and was a twin
daughter of John Lulham
(1778-?) and Charlotte
Waters (c1782-1824).
Her twin brother was Benjamin Lulham. Harriett
died at her home in Martins Row, Henfield, in 1903 and her daughter
Harriett Henly was present.
Samuel and Harriet had planned to go to Canada with the Petworth
emigration, their names are listed but they did not go. (Thanks
to Anne Warren for finding this and for Harriet's year
and place of death.)
When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living in Washington and
Samuel was a 42 year old blacksmith's labourer. Harriet was then 36
years old and gave her place of birth as Botolphs. In 1861 the
family were living at School House in Washington and Samuel was a 52
year old blacksmith. By 1871 the couple and their sons George and
Benjamin were living in Henfield. In 1881 the couple and their son
Alfred were living in the High Street, Henfield. The 1891 census
records that 82 year old Samuel and 76 year old Harriett were living in
London Road, Henfield along with their son Alfred.

time of the 1851 census he was 2 years old. At the time of the
1851 census he was 2 years old. In 1861 he was 12 years old and
the eldest of his siblings living at home. In 1871 he was an
unmarried 22 year old seaman living at home with his parents.
George married Fanny Browning on 13 March 1875 in
Henfield.

He was 8 years old in 1861. In 1881 he was an umarried 29 year old
agricultural labourer living at home.
