and Ann Robinson married by licence on 3 March 1796 in West
Grinstead, Sussex. He was a bachelor and she a spinster. The
witnesses to their marriage were James Robinson and
Sarah Etheridge. As a widower, Charles Matthews
married Elizabeth Attree by banns on 14 March 1809 in
Cowfold, Sussex. She was a widow and they were both of Cowfold.
The witnesses to their marriage were Sarah Brown and
William Hills. (They were not my direct
ancestors.)
Charles Matthews date and place of birth/baptism are
unknown, to me. Might he have been baptised on 12 November 1769 in
Twineham, Sussex, the son of
Thomas Mathew
and Elizabeth Mitchel?
Ann Robinson's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown,
to me. She was buried on 4 March 1805 in West Grinstead. The
burial register noted that she was the wife of Charles Matthews.
Elizabeth's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to
me. She was buried on 24 January 1828 in Cowfold. The burial
register noted that she was the wife of Charles Mathews.
Previously as Elizabeth Brown she married William
Attree by banns on 13 September 1787. She was then a
spinster. The witnesses to their marriage were John Pollard
and Sarah Pollard. William was buried on 15 March
1807 in Cowfold.

Cowfold. He may have died aged 79 years and have been buried on 20
March 1891 in Cowfold.
John married Sarah Lish by licence on 13 November 1831
in Steyning. He was then from Cowfold. The witnesses to
their marriage were Charles Easton and Richard
Marchant Morris. Their marriage licence
was issued on 12 November 1831 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester, which
also noted that he was a bachelor and she a spinster.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 5 children (Mark, Luke,
Elizabeth, John and Matthew) were living in Cowfold. They were
both said to be 25 years old and John was a farm labourer.
In 1851 the couple were living at Cotlands Cottage in Cowfold.
John was a 39 year old gardener and Sarah was 38. He gave his
place of birth as Cowfold and she as Portslade, Sussex. With them
on census night were 4 of their children, namely Elizabeth, John,
Matthew and Benjamin.
John and Sarah had the following children:

Mark Matthews was baptised on 8 January 1832 in
Cowfold. The baptism register noted that his father was a
labourer. In 1841 he was 9 years old.

Luke Matthews was baptised on 26 January 1824 in
Cowfold. The baptism register noted that his father was a
labourer and his mother's name as Jane. He was 7 years
old in 1841.

Elizabeth Matthews was baptised on 27 March 1836 in
Cowfold. The baptism register noted her father was a labourer
and her mother's name as Jane. In 1841 she was 5 years old.
She was a 15 year old servant out of place in 1851.

John Matthews was baptised on 24 June 1838 in
Cowfold. The baptism register noted that his father was a
labourer and his mother's name as Jane. In 1841 he was 3 years
old. He was a 12 year old scholar in 1851.

in Cowfold. The baptism register note that his father was a
labourer. At the time of the 1841 census he was 4 months old.
He was a 10 year old scholar in 1851.

may have married Martha Ansell by banns on 19 April
1824 in Cowfold. He was a bachelor and she a spinster from
Horsham. The witnesses to their marriage were James Morris
and Susan Ansell.

that his parents were from the poor house. He may have died aged
38 years and have been buried on 18 February 1840 in Cowfold.
