John MASTERS (c1715-1763)

and Ann PYLE (c1720-1783)

John Masters and Ann Pyle married on 24 September 1738 at All Saints in Hastings, Sussex. (Another John Masters married Anne Parker by licence on 12 December 1737 in Withyham, Sussex. They were both then of Wadhurst, Sussex.)

John Masters date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me. I have checked the East Sussex Record Office Baptism Index and there were no possible baptisms for him. He was buried on 9 May 1763 in Icklesham, Sussex.

Ann Pyle's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me. She was buried on 2 June 1783 in Icklesham. The burial register recorded that was the "relict" of John Masthouse.

John Masters and Ann Pyle had 3 known children:

John Masters was baptised on 13 May 1739 in Icklesham.
John Masters was baptised on 2 November 1740 in Icklesham. He may have been a witness to the 1770 marriage of his brother Robert. John then made his X mark, whereas Robert signed his name.
Robert Masters was baptised on 20 December 1747 in Icklesham. He married Mary Hicks on 20 February 1770 in Icklesham. (They have their own page.)

No additional children for John and Ann have been found in the ESRO Baptism Index, nor were there any for the couple who married in Withyham in 1737.

Icklesham parish is surrounded by Udimore, Rye, Pett, Fairlight, Guestling and Brede.

To do list:

	Did John leave a will? - No
	Check the ESRO baptism index for John and Ann's baptisms and any more children for them. Her surname was recorded as Pyle in the marriage index. There was a Mary Ryles of Icklesham who left a will in 1812. - No John, still to check Ann.
	Check for possible children of John Masters and Ann Parker. Is it possible that John first married Ann Parker and then Ann Pyle, or were there 2 John's of similar age? - No further children for John and Ann. There was a John and Elizabeth who had a daughter baptised in Wadhurst in 1741.
	Did John born in 1740 marry and have children? Check the baptism index for any possible children. Might he have been the John Masters who married Elizabeth Atwell on 15 April 1760 in Rye? He was a bricklayer and she a spinster and they were both of Rye. Then on 22 December 1767 a John Masters widower married Sarah Dawes spinster in Rye. They were also both of Rye. And then might he also married Elizabeth Hussell on 1 January 1782 in Rye? He was a widower and she a widow and they were both of Rye. - John of Rye was most probably the son of Thomas. They both left wills (1777 Thomas and 1818 John) and they were both bricklayers of Rye. No possible children for Icklesham John.
	Double check the above dates against the original registers, just in case anything else has been added in the margins of the registers.
	Are there any land tax or poor law tax or manorial records covering Icklesham for the time John, senior, was living there?
	Check the apprenticeship lists. - Nothing found in the SRS volume.
