Gregorie
MARCKWYCK (c1530-1592)
and Elinor (?-?)

Gregory Markwick
and Elinor were possibly my 12x Great Grandparents. They may
have married in the 1560's, but I don't know for certain that Elinor was the
mother of all of Gregory's children, whom he mentioned in his will.
Gregorie Marckwyck was a yeoman of
Flottingden in Wadhurst, Sussex, of which he had held the lease in 1560.
He was the son of Richard Markwick, a yeoman of Wadhurst,
and Johane.
He left a will dated 14 July 1592 and proved
on 29 November 1592 and he appointed his brother Thomas Marckwick
and son-in-law John Barham as overseers of his will. Might he
have been the son of Richard Markewyke who left a will proved in
1564?
Elinor was named in her husband's will.
Gregory Markwick and
Elinor had 7 known children:
-
Richard Markwick was the first to be mentioned in his father's will
and he was also appointed the sole executor of his father's estate.
-
Nicholas Markwick was mentioned second in his father's will, at
which time he was under 21 years. He was also mentioned in his Uncle
John Markwick's will.
-
Annes
Markwick, my 11x Great Grandmother married
John
Barham sometime before 1590. (They have their own page.)
-
James Thomas may have left a will datd 3 June 1612 and proved on 31
July 1612, at which time he was a yeoman of Wadhurst.
-
Thomas Markwick
-
Peter Markwick may have been aged about 19 years in 1592, as his
father directed in 1592 that he should receive his legacy in 2 years time
when he reached the age of 21. He may have left a will dated 8
September 1635 and proved on 14 October 1635, at which time he was said to
be a mercer of Wadhurst. As Peter Marquick he may have
married Frances Hall on 26 April 1610 in Frant, Sussex.
-
William Markwick may have been aged about 17 years in 1592.
He may have married Sarah Hall on 23 June 1606 in Wadhurst.
Did Gregory have a grandson also named Gregory Markwick who
was mentioned as "my loving friend" in the 1620 will of
Robert Bidwell,
Rector of East Hoathly? Did the younger Gregory marry
Elizabeth Barkham or Peckham on 5 February 1622/3
in Little Horsted? He was then of Wadhurst and Elizabeth was of
Mayfield. Did he then marry Elizabeth Byne on 14
August 1632 in Burwash? He was then said to be a gent of Wadhurst and
she a spinster of Burwash. And again, did he marry Mary Hosmer
on 5 September 1639 in Rotherfield. Or were there several Gregory's of
similar age?
A Gregory Markwick of Alfriston left a will in 1669 and
another of Ticehurst left a will in 1683.
