Thomas MARCHANT (?-1758)

and Elizabeth SEVENOAKE (?-1734)

and Elizabeth SMITH (?-?)

Thomas Marchant and Elizabeth Sevenoake married on 31 May 1726 in Rotherfield, Sussex.  At the time Thomas was of Buxted and and Elizabeth of Rotherfield.  This was Thomas's first marriage.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Marchant's date and place of birth are uncertain - see below.  He may have been baptised on 15 January 1691/2 in Cuckfield, Sussex and have been the son of Thomas Marchant (c1664-?) and Ann Jarrett.  He made a Will dated 20 March 1758, which was proved on 31 March 1758.  In his Will he styled himself as Thomas Marchant of Crowborough in the parish of Rotherfield, a Cordwainer, and mentioned wife Elizabeth, son Thomas of Crowborough and son John of Cookfield.  The witnesses to his Will were John William Richardson, John Saller and William Okill, senior.  (William Oakill was my 7x Great Grandfather.)

Elizabeth Sevenoake's date and place of birth are unknown.  She was buried on 23 September 1734 in Rotherfield, at which time she was decribed as the wife of Thomas Marchant.

Thomas Marchant and Elizabeth Sevenoake had 2 known children:

  1. 5 89 Thomas Marchant (1726-1793) married Mary Wenham in 1758 in Rotherfield.  (They have their own page.)

  2. John Marchant was baptised on 13 October 1727 in Rotherfield.  It is not thought he married.  Like his father and brother he was a Cordwainer.  Under the terms of his father's Will he was to have received 20 pounds.  He lived in Cuckfield, Sussex from at least 1758 until his death in 1794 and was buried there on 8 July 1794.  He left a Will dated 3 June 1794 and proved on 5 September 1794.  In his Will he mentioned his widowed sister-in-law Mary Marchant, nephews Thomas Marchant and John Marchant, who were named as joint executors, and neice Elizabeth Marchant.  He also left a legacy to his housekeeper Mary Burley.  The witnesses to his Will were Samuel Halter, Samuel Chatfield and A. M. George.

As a Widower of Buxted, Thomas Marchant married Elizabeth Smith of Rotherfield on 7 April 1735 in Rotherfield.

Elizabeth Smith's date and place of birth are unknown.  She died after 1758.

Thomas, or his son Thomas, took on 2 known cordwainer apprentices:

  1. Ezekiel Maplesden of Rotherfield from 16 October 1745 for 3 years. A duty of 8 was paid on 6 November 1745.

  2. John Ashdown, son of John Ashdown from 1 May 1748 for 3 years. A duty of 9 was paid on 20 May 1748.

As Thomas Marchant first married in 1726, he must have been born before 1708, and there are the following possible baptisms:

15 January 1691/2 to Thomas Marchant and Ann Jarrett in Cuckfield

19 April 1694 to Richard Marchant and Ursula Read in Mayfield

6 March 1695 to William Marchant and Elizabeth Humphrey in Horsted Keynes

7 April 1698 to Thomas Marchant and Ann Apps in Mayfield

16 September 1705 to Henry Marchant and Mary in Framfield

Another Thomas Marchant married Mary Kempe on 9 April 1719 in Ticehurst.
