James MARCHANT (c1770-?)
and Ann KNOWLES (c1770-?)

James
Marchant and Ann
Knowles married on 12 April 1796 in East
Grinstead, Sussex. At the time James was a Bachelor and signed his
name. Ann was a Spinster and made her mark. They were both then of
East Grinstead. The witnesses to the marriage were
John Eastland and John Finch, who both signed their names.
(They were not my direct ancestors.)
James Marchant's
date and place of birth are unknown. He may have been baptised on 5
September 1762 in Crawley, Sussex, as the son of
Henry Marchant and
Ann Woodman, or on 5 June 1774 in Cuckfield, Sussex, as the son of Henry
Marchant and Susanna Anscomb.
Ann Knowles
may have been baptised on 3 May 1772 in Balcombe, Sussex, as the daughter
of Richard Knowles (c1740-1788) and
Frances Brooker (c1744-1826).
(Richard and Frances were my 5x Great Grandparents.) Another Ann Knols
was baptised on 3 January 1766 in Slaugham, Sussex, the daughter of James
Knols and Elizabeth, however, James made a Will 11 December 1773 and
his daughter Ann was not mentioned. Or Ann may have been born in Surrey,
or not baptised at all.
James Marchant
and Ann Knowles had 5 known children:
-
5
89
James Marchant was
baptised on 5 March 1797 in East Grinstead.
-
Henry Marchant was baptised on 3 February 1799 in East Grinstead.
He may have married Ann Heath by Banns on 29 January 1820 in East
Grinstead. At the time they were both of East Grinstead, he was a
Bachelor and signed his name, whilst she a Widow and made her mark. The
witnesses to the marriage were James Isted and Mary Isted who
both signed their names.
-
Ann Elizabeth Marchant was baptised on 21 December 1800 in East
Grinstead.
-
Thomas Marchant was baptised on 7 August 1803 in East Grinstead.
He may have married Sophia Heath on 19 February 1833 in Ardingly.
At time they were both of Ardingly, he was a Bachelor and made his mark,
whilst she was a Spinster and signed her name. The witnesses were
James Isted and Mary Isted who both signed their names.
Sophia may have been baptised on 15 July 1810 in East Grinstead, as the
daughter of William Heath and Ann Geer.
-
Edward Marchant was baptised on 25 September 1808 in East Grinstead.
The witnesses to the 1820 and 1833 marriages above, were James Isted and
Mary Bysh who married on 29 May 1803 in East Grinstead.
William Heath and Ann Geer married on 11 May 1810 in East
Grinstead, and they had 5 known children: Sophia Heath (1810-?),
Thomas Heath (1810-?), Amelia Heath (1813-?), Robert Heath
(1815-?) and Ann Heath (1818-?). Did William die between 1818 and
1820, and his widow marry Henry Marchant in 1820? And was the
Henry Marchant the one born in 1799 or perhaps an Uncle?
It would seem that James Marchant was the son of a Henry Marchant,
but who was Henry?
Henry Marchant married Ann Woodman on 11 April 1762 in Worth.
They had 2 known children: James baptised 1762 in Crawley and
Henry 1766 in Worth. Did Ann die and Henry then marry Susanna
Anscomb on 7 April 1768 in Balcombe? They had 3 known children:
Nanny 1769 in Balcombe, James 1774 and Stephen 1783, both
in Cuckfield. If so then the James Marchant who married Ann
Knowles may have been the one baptised in 1774.
Henry may have been baptised on 27 July 1755 in Ardingly, aged 18 years,
therefore, born about 1737. He may have had a brother named Edmond
Marchant who was baptised aged 15 years on 6 July 1755 in Ardingly.
Were they the sons of
Henry Marchant (1689-1756) and
Mary Harlin
(1696-?)?
