William MANSELL (1769-1845)

and Ann APTED (c1767-1845)

William Mansell and Ann Apted married by licence on 15 September 1791 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was a bachelor of Henfield and she a spinster of West Grinstead.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Mansell was baptised on 12 November 1769 in Henfield, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Mansell and Elizabeth Banfield.  William died aged 75 years and was buried on 11 April 1845 in Henfield.  The burial register noted he was from Woodmancote.

Ann Apted was born about 1767.  She died aged 78 years and was buried on 1 February 1845 in Henfield.  Might she have been baptised on 25 May 1769 in Ashington, Sussex, the daughter of Richard Apted and Mary?

At the time of the 1841 census William was a 70 year old farmer and he was living at Eton Thorn in Woodmancote, along with 70 year old Ann Mansell, 16 year old Isaiah Mansell and 50 year old Elizabeth Browning.

William Mansell and Ann Apted had 6 known children:

  1. William Mansel was baptised on 22 September 1793 in Henfield.  He married twice, firstly to Lucy Bray in 1817 and then Elizabeth Pellett in 1832.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Charlotte Mansell was baptised on 18 September 1796 in Henfield.

  3. Maria Mansell was baptised on 30 December 1798 in Henfield.

  4. Jane Mansell was baptised on 20 September 1801 in Henfield.

  5. Henry Mansell was baptised on 18 May 1806 in Henfield.  Henry died aged 26 years and was buried on 29 January 1833 in Henfield.

Henry married Sarah Dale by banns on 28 January 1826 in Brighton.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

Henry and Sarah had the following children:

    1. Henry Mansell was born about September 1828.  He died aged 5 months and was buried on 9 January 1829 in Henfield.  The burial register noted his parents were from Brighton.

    2. Alfred Mansell was baptised on 11 April 1830 in Brighton.  The baptism register noted his father was a labourer of Richmond Place.

  6. Elizabeth Mansell was born on 31 August 1811 and baptised on 29 September 1811 in Henfield.
