Thomas MANSBRIDGE (1856-1935)

and Alice DAVEY (1855-1941)

Thomas Mansbridge and Alice Davey married on 28 October 1876 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.  They were both 21 years old.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Mansbridge and Thomas Davey.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Mansbridge was baptised on 3 February 1856 in Nuthurst, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Mansbridge (1831-1914) and Jane Waller (1835-1909).  Thomas died aged 79 years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1935 in the Cuckfield registration district.  He was 5 years old in 1861 and living with his parents at Berry Land in Hurstpierpoint.  In 1871 he was a 15 year old agricultural labourer and living with his parents as Washbrooks in Hurstpierpoint.

Alice Davey was born in the fourth quarter of 1855 in Shermanbury, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Thomas Davey (1820-1894) and Mary Ann Roberts (1821-1897).  Alice died aged 85 years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1941 in the Cuckfield registration district.  She was 5 years old in 1861 and living with her parents in Partridge Green, Sussex.

When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and 2 children (Emily and Alfred) were living at No. 5 Washbrooks, Hurstpierpoint.  They were both 25 years old and Thomas was a shepherd.  He gave his place of birth as Nuthurst and she as Henfield.  Also with the family was 15 year old boarder, William Burt who was a farm labourer from Cuckfield.

In 1891 the couple and 5 children (Alfred, Horace, Lydia, Edward and Ernest) were living at Washbrooks, Hurstpierpoint.  They were both 35 years old and he was a gardener.  They gave their places of birth as Midhurst and Henfield.  Also with the family was Thomas's brother William Mansbridge.

The 1901 census recorded the couple 5 children (Horace, Ernest, Edith, Frank and George) were living at Washbrooks Cottage.  They were both 45 years old and he was a market gardener.  This time their place of birth were noted as Cowfold and Henfield.

At the time of the 1911 census the couple and 3 children (Edith, Frank and George) were living at Washbrooks, Hurstpierpoint.  They were both 55 years old and Thomas was a nursery man.  They had been married for 34 years and had had 10 children, 1 of whom had died.  Their place of birth were given as Nuthurst and Shermanbury.
