Thomas MANSBRIDGE (1831-1914)

and Jane WALLER (1835-1909)

Thomas Mansbridge and Jane Waller married on 17 March 1855 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she was a spinster and minor.  Their fathers were named as William Mansbridge a labourer and Benjamin Waller a farmer.  The witnesses to their marriage were Ann Coushen and John Waller (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Mansbridge was baptised on 16 October 1831 in Shermanbury, Sussex.  He was the son of William Mansbridge (1794-1866) and Sarah Neeve (1799-1856).  He died aged 82 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1914 in the Brighton registration district.  At the time of the 1841 census he was 9 years and living with his parents at Corner House in Shermanbury.  In 1851 he was a 19 year old agricultural labourer and the eldest of his siblings living at home, at Barrack House, Shermanbury.

Jane Waller was baptised on 26 April 1835 in Slaugham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Benjamin Waller (c1791-?) and Ann (c1796-?).  Jane died aged 75 years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1909 in the Newhaven registration district.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was 16 years old and living with her parents at Godshill in Cowfold.

When the 1861 census was recorded the couple and 3 children (Thomas, Mary Jane and William) were living at Berry Land in Hurstpierpoint.  Thomas was a 27 year old agricultural labourer and Jane was 27.  He gave his place of birth as Shermanbury and she as Lower Beeding.

In 1871 the couple and 8 children (Thomas, Mary Jane, William, Elizabeth, Louisa, Frederick, Charles and Annie) were living at Washbrooks, Hurstpierpoint.  Thomas was a 39 year old agricultural labourer and Jane was 38.  They again gave their places of birth as Shermanbury and Lower Beeding.

The 1881 census recorded the couple and 5 children (Frederick, Charles, Annie, James and Walter) were living in Falmer, Sussex.  Thomas was a 50 year old agricultural labourer and Jane was 48.  They again gave their places of birth as Shermanbury and Lower Beeding.

At the time of the 1891 census the couple and 5 children (Frederick, Charles, Annie, James and Walter) were living on the Lewes Road in Falmer.  Thomas was a 59 year old tugman and Jane was 57.  Also with them was their 4 year old grandson, Thomas W. Mansbridge who was born in Lewes, Sussex.

The couple were still living on the Lewes Road, Falmer when the 1901 census was recorded.  Thomas was a 69 year old general farm labourer and Jane was 68.  Also with them were their daughter Annie, grandson Thomas and unmarried 28 year old board, Edward Daly who was a shepherd on a farm and from Plumpton.

The 1911 census recorded Thomas was a 79 year old widower and old age pensioner.  He was living with the family of his grandson Thomas Walter Mansbridge.
