Thomas MANSBRIDGE (1799-1873)

and Eliza ANSCOMBE (1815-?)

Thomas Mansbridge and Eliza Anscombe married on 1 August 1832 in Bolney, Sussex.  They were both then of Bolney.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Mary Lewry and Stephen Mansbridge.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Thomas was the brother of my 3x Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Mansbridge.)

Thomas Mansbridge was baptised on 20 April 1799 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the son of James Mansbridge (1759-1830) and Mary Finch (1768-1837).  He died in 1873.

Eliza Anscombe was baptised on 5 February 1815 in Cowfold.  She was the daughter of Elizabeth Anscombe, who may have been Elizabeth Holman Anscombe who was baptised in Cowfold in 1791, the daughter of Sarah Anscomb.

In 1841 the family were living at Welches, Cowfold, next door to Joseph Heasman and Ann Dowlen.  When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living at Welches Cottage in Cuckfield and Thomas was then an agricultural labourer.

Thomas Mansbridge and Eliza Anscombe had 10 known children:

  1. Esther Mansbridge was born on 7 March and baptised on 7 April 1833 in Henfield.

Esther married Edmund Tidey on 14 June 1856 in Cowfold.  He was then a bachelor and labourer and she was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Henry Tidy and Thomas Mansbridge, who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Jephthah Wane and Ellen Tidey.

  2. Kezia Mansbridge was born on 6 February and baptised on 8 March 1835 in Henfield.  She married John Scutt in 1853.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Jane Mansbridge was born on 1 May and baptised on 11 June 1837 in Henfield.  She died in 1916.

  4. Ann Mansbridge was born on 14 July 1839 and died on 3 March 1917.

    Ann married Walter Blaber.

Walter was born on 14 March and baptised on 18 May 1837 in Lewes and was the son of Jesse Blaber (1796-1856) and Mary Ann Brown (1806-?).

Walter and Ann had 8 known children.

  5. Maria Mansbridge was born about 1841 in Cowfold.

Maria married Ephriam Pratt in 1873.

  6. Henry Mansbridge was baptised on 28 April 1844 in Cowfold.  He died in 1926.  When the 1861 census was recorded he was a 17 year old servant (?addman?) in the home of Charlotte Smart at Coltstaple Farm in Horsham.

Henry married Emily Boniface on 19 June 1865 in Nuthurst.

Henry and Emily had 6 known children.

  7. Alfred Mansbridge was born about 1846 in Cowfold and died in 1936.  In 1861 he was a 14 year old servant living at Bottings Farm in Nuthurst in the home of John Comber and his wife Mary Ann.

Alfred married Jane Richardson in 1870.

Alfred and Jane had 5 known children.

  8. Harriet Mansbridge was born about 1849 in Cowfold and died in 1870.

  9. Barbara Mansbridge was born about 1850 in Cowfold.

Barbara married John O. Cruttenden in 1873.

When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in Tonbridge, Kent where they had rooms on the Huntley's Estate at Culverden Castle Stables.  John was then a gardener.

  10. Jesse Mansbridge was born about 1858 and died in 1932.

    Jesse married Maria Miles.
