Thomas MANSBRIDGE (1799-1873)

and Eliza ANSCOMBE (1815-?)

Thomas Mansbridge and Eliza Anscombe married on 1 August 1832 in Bolney, Sussex.  They were both then of Bolney.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Mary Lewry and Stephen Mansbridge.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Thomas was the brother of my 3x Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Mansbridge.)

Thomas Mansbridge was baptised on 20 April 1799 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the son of James Mansbridge (1759-1830) and Mary Finch (1768-1837).  He died aged 74 years and was buried on 21 December 1873 in Nuthurst, Sussex..

Eliza Anscombe was baptised on 5 February 1815 in Cowfold, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Elizabeth Anscombe, who may have been Elizabeth Holman Anscombe who was baptised in Cowfold in 1791, the daughter of Sarah Anscomb.

In 1841 the family were living at Welches, Cowfold, next door to Joseph Heasman and Ann Dowlen.

When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living at Welches Cottage in Cuckfield and Thomas was then an agricultural labourer.

The 1861 census records the couple and 3 children (Barbara, Jesse and Eliza) were living in Maplehurst within the parish of Nuthurst.  Thomas was then a 62 year old agricultural labourer and Eliza was 44.  They both gave their places of birth as Cowfold.  Also with the family were 2 lodgers, namely, 33 year old unmarried Thomas Attree who was a navvy from Cowfold and 38 year old unmarried Henry Mills from Bolney.

At the time of the 1871 census the couple and 2 children (Jesse and Eliza) were living in Maplehurst.  Thomas was a 72 year old agricultural labourer and Eliza was 55.  They both again said they were born in Cowfold.  Also with them was 47 year old unmarried lodger Thomas Attree who was an agricultural labourer from Cowfold.  (Thomas Attree was baptised on 12 June 1823 in Cowfold and was the son of William Attree and Mary Constable.)

Thomas Mansbridge and Eliza Anscombe had 11 known children:

Edmund was born on 29 August 1831 and baptised on 18 September 1831 in Bolney, Sussex.  He was the son of Henry Tidy and Susanna Maria Foot.
