John MANSBRIDGE (1763-1836)

and Sarah WHITE (c1768-1825)

John Mansbridge and Sarah White married by banns on 17 March 1788 at the parish church of St. George in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to the marriage were ? Robinson and William Gratwick.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  John was the brother of my 4x Great Grandfather, James Mansbridge.)  (A James Robinson married Sarah Burgess in West Grinstead in 1793 and a William Robinson married Hannah Bristow in 1795, but William was then said to be from Brekland in Surrey.)

John Mansbridge was baptised on 26 June 1763 in West Grinstead.  He was the son of John Mansbridge (1729-1807) and Ann Newman (1730-1807).  He died aged 72 years and was buried on 10 April 1836 in West Grinstead.

Sarah Whiteís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She most probably died aged 57 years and was buried on 6 April 1825 in West Grinstead, however, the burial register notes she was the wife of James Mansbridge.

Sarah may have had 2 illegitimate sons:

  1. Charles Fairs White was baptised on 6 January 1785 in West Grinstead.  (Might his father have been Charles Fairs who was born in 1754?  Charles and his wife also had a daughter baptised on 6 January 1785.)

  2. John White was baptised on 7 December 1788 in West Grinstead, the son of Sarah White.  (Might his baptism have been 1787 rather than 1788?  And was his father John Mansbridge?)

John Mansbridge and Sarah White had 5 known children:

  1. William Mansbridge was baptised on 13 May 1794 in West Grinstead.  He married Sarah Neeve in 1817.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Charity Mansbridge was born on 27 September and baptised on 12 November 1797 in West Grinstead.  She married William Roberts in 1821.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Ann Mansbridge was baptised on 16 June 1800 in West Grinstead.

Anne may have married Henry Golds by banns on 11 February 1823 in West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were Ann Golds and Edward Freeman.

  4. Thomas Mansbridge was baptised on 1 January 1804 in West Grinstead.  He may have died aged 51 years and have been buried on 13 January 1853 in Horsham, Sussex.

Thomas married Ann Tidey by banns on 11 October 1831 in Cowfold.  The witnesses to their marriage were Henry Hill and ? Newman.

When the 1851 census was recorded, Thomas and his wife were lodging with the family of John Carter in Sandy Lane, Lower Beeding.  Thomas was then a 45 year old agricultural labourer and gave his place of birth as West Grinstead.  Ann was 44 and said she was born in Cowfold.

  5. Richard Mansbridge was baptised on 20 December 1807 in West Grinstead and buried there as an infant on 19 May 1808.

The following is my attempt to work out where and when Sarah White was born/baptised.  My best guess is that she was baptised in Keymer in 1768, the daughter of Thomas and Jenny.  I think here parents may have come from or moved to Hurstpierpoint.

Or, might she have been baptised in 1769 in Pulborough, the daughter of John and Mary?

  3. Sarah White was baptised on 17 July 1765 in Kirdford, the daughter of William White and Mary.  Was she Sarah no. 3 below?

  4. Sarah White was baptised on 2 March 1766 in Linchmere, the daughter of John White and Ann.

  5. Sarah White was baptised on 25 March 1766 in Portslade, the daughter of Samuel White and Sarah Was she Sarah no. 1 below?

  9. Sarah White was baptised on 28 or 29 February 1768 at St. Clements, Hastings, the daughter of James White and Sarah.  She was buried on 6 June 1769 at St. Clements, Hastings and the burial register noted she was the daughter of James and Sarah.

  10. Sarah White was baptised on 17 December 1768 in Keymer, the daughter of Thomas White and Jenny Could this be the Sarah who married John Mansbridge?  Her year of birth would seem to fit her possible age at death.

Sarah White was buried on 19 August 1772 in New Fishbourne.

Thomas White and Jenny married before or about 1764 and would seem to have been the only White family having children baptised in Keymer from 1764-1771.  Thomas may have been buried there in 1776.  Jenny may have either remarried or was buried elsewhere.  Jenny may have been a pet name for Jane.

  2. Thomas White was baptised on 10 February 1766 in Keymer.  He most probably died young.
