John MANSBRIDGE
(1763-1836)
and Sarah WHITE (c1765-?)

John Mansbridge
and
Sarah White married by banns on 17 March 1788
at the parish church of St. George
in West Grinstead, Sussex. He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.
The witnesses to the marriage were ? Robinson and William Gratwick.
(They were not my direct ancestors. John was the brother of my 4x
Great Grandfather, James Mansbridge.) (A James Robinson
married Sarah Burgess in West Grinstead in 1793 and a William
Robinson married Hannah Bristow in 1795, but William was then
said to be from Brekland in Surrey.)
John Mansbridge
was baptised on 26 June 1763 in West Grinstead. He was the son of
John Mansbridge
(1729-1807) and Ann
Newman (1730-1807). He died aged 72 years and was buried on 10
April 1836 in West Grinstead.
Sarah White’s
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
Before her marriage she had and illegitimate
son:
-
Charles Fairs White was baptised on 6 January 1785 in
West Grinstead. (Might his father have been
Charles Fairs
who was born in 1754? Charles and his wife also had a daughter
baptised on 6 January 1785.)
-
John White was baptised on 7 December 1788 in West
Grinstead, the son of Sarah White. Might his
baptism have been wrongly recorded in 1788 instead of 1787?
John Mansbridge
and Sarah White had 5
known children:
-
William
Mansbridge was baptised on 13 May 1794 in West Grinstead. He
married Sarah
Neeve in 1817. (They have their own page.)
-
Charity Mansbridge was born on 27
September and baptised on
12 November 1797 in West Grinstead. She died on 30 April 1861 and
was buried in Cowfold. Charity married
William Roberts by licence on 7 June 1821 in Cowfold. He
was then a bachelor of Cowfold and she a spinster of West Grinstead.
The witnesses to the marriage were John Batchelor and Henry
Heasman.
William was born on 30 January and baptised on 1 March 1801 in Ashurst and was
the son of
John
Roberts (c1765-1849) and
Ruth
Lelliott (1780-1846).
-
Ann
Mansbridge was baptised on 16 June 1800 in West Grinstead.
Anne may have married Henry Golds by banns on 11
February 1823 in West Grinstead. The witnesses to their marriage
were Ann Golds and Edward Freeman.
-
Thomas
Mansbridge was baptised on 1 January 1804 in West Grinstead.
He may have died aged 51 years and have been buried on 13 January 1853
in Horsham, Sussex.
Thomas married Ann Tidey by banns on 11 October 1831 in
Cowfold. The witnesses to their marriage were Henry Hill
and ? Newman.
When the 1851 census was recorded, Thomas and his wife were lodging with
the family of John Carter in Sandy Lane, Lower Beeding.
Thomas was then a 45 year old agricultural labourer and gave his place
of birth as West Grinstead. Ann was 44 and said she was born in
Cowfold.
-
Richard
Mansbridge was baptised on 20 December 1807 in West Grinstead and
buried there as an infant on 19 May 1808.
