John MANSBRIDGE
(1729-1807)
and Ann NEWMAN (1730-1807)

John Mansbridge and Ann Newman were my 5x Great Grandparents.
(Click
here to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married
by banns on 12 October 1756 at the parish church of St. Mary's in Shipley, Sussex. They were both then of
Shipley. John made his X mark, whilst Ann signed her name. The
witnesses to their marriage were Anthony Mansbridge and
William Banfield, who both signed their names. (Anthony was the son
of
Roger
Mansbridge.)
John Mansbridge
was baptised on 9 December 1729 in Cowfold, Sussex. He was the son of
5
131
John Mansbridge
(1698-1742) and
5
131
Mary Ede
(c1700-1782). Another John
Mansbridge was baptised in Cowfold on 23 January 1724/5 as the son of
5
132
Roger
Mansbridge and
5
132
Mary
Phillerry. John was buried on 6 June
1807 in West Grinstead (his wife had predeceased him). The other John may have been buried on 12 June 1780
in West Grinstead. (I'm not 100% certain that 1729 John married
Ann, rather than 1725 John. Does anyone have any proof it was 1729
John?)
Ann Newman was baptised
on 20 May 1730 in Shipley. She was the youngest daughter of
Thomas Newman
(1668-1744) and
Ann Davis
(1684-1760). Ann was buried on 2 February 1807 in West Grinstead and
the burial register recorded that she was the wife of John Mansbridge.
Her father was a tailor and she was mentioned in his
will.
John Mansbridge
and Ann Newman had 5
known children:
-
Mary Mansbridge
was baptised on 15 July 1757 in West
Grinstead.
Mary had an illegitimate son:
-
Thomas Blake
Mansbridge was baptised on 13
January 1782 in Cowfold.
Thomas married Elizabeth and they had 2
known children:
-
John
Mansbridge was born about 1809.
-
William
Mansbridge was born about 1812.
Mary
married John Standford by licence on 19 July 1786 in Nuthurst,
Sussex. She was then of West Grinstead.
-
James Mansbridge,
my 4x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 15 February 1759 in West
Grinstead. He married
Mary Finch
in 1788. (They have their own
page.)
-
Ann Mansbridge
was baptised on 9 March 1761 in West
Grinstead.
Anne had an illegitimate son:
-
Thomas Mansbridge
was baptised on 21 July 1783 in
Cowfold and buried there on 29 July 1783.
Ann
married William Burrell by licence on 1 March 1786 in Cowfold.
The witnesses to their marriage were William Turner and
Richard Baker.
Their marriage licence was issued on 28 February 1786 by the Archdeaconry
of Lewes, which recorded that she was a 23 year old spinster of Cowfold,
and he a 17 year old bachelor of Cowfold who married with the consent of
John Burrell.
-
John Mansbridge
was baptised on 26 June 1763 in West
Grinstead. He married
Sarah White
in 1788. (They have their own page.)
-
Thomas Mansbridge
was baptised on 2 June 1765 in West
Grinstead. He may have been buried in West Grinstead on 10 January
1766, but the burial register only give a name and no further identifying
details.
