John MANSBRIDGE (1698-1742)

and Mary EDE (c1700-1782)

John Mansbridge and Mary Ede were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 9 April 1724 in Cowfold, Sussex.

John Mansbridge was baptised on 8 April 1698 in West Wittering, Sussex.  He was the son of William Mansbridge (1662-1712) and Mary Owens (1662-?).  (A Roger Mansbridge was baptised in 1698 in West Grinstead, Sussex, the son of John Mansbridge.)   John was buried on 22 April 1742 in Cowfold.

Mary Ede's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 7 February 1782 in Cowfold.

Might Mary have been baptised as Mary Ead on 8 May 1700 in Shipley, Sussex, and have been the daughter of William Ede and Mary Denton?  Or was she baptised as Mary Eed on 26 October 1703 in Ashington, Sussex, the daughter of John Ede?

John Mansbridge and Mary Ede had 4 known children:

  1. Mary Mansbridge was baptised on 26 October 1726 in Cowfold.

Mary married Thomas Bassford on 4 February 1747/8 in Cowfold.

Thomas was buried on 29 March 1751 in Cowfold.  (Thomas may have had a sister named Sarah Bassford who had a relationship with John Roberts.)  There was a Thomas Basford who was baptised on 28 April 1719 in Sompting, Sussex the son of Simon Basford and Mary Dedmond, but he was buried on 14 March 1720 in Sompting.

Thomas and Mary had 1 known daughter:

    1. Mary Bassford was baptised on 27 October 1751 in Cowfold.

As a widow, Mary Bashford married Thomas Guildford, a bachelor, by banns on 14 April 1758 in Brighton, Sussex.  They were both then of Brighton.

Thomas and Mary had the following child:

    1. Anne Guildford was baptised on 3 April 1760 in Brighton.

  2. John Mansbridge, may have been my 5x Great Grandfather.  He was baptised on 9 December 1729 in Cowfold.  John married Ann Newman in 1756.  (They have their own page.)

  3. William Mansbridge was baptised on 11 May 1735 in Cowfold.  He died age 80 years and was buried on 21 July 1816 in West Grinstead, Sussex.

William married Ann Matthews by licence on 25 September 1760 in Nuthurst.  He was then a husbandman and they were both of Nuthurst.

(I'm not sure why I think this William married Ann Matthews.  On 21 April 1761 a William Mansbridge married Elizabeth Goacher by banns in West Grinstead.  So far I've not found any children for William and Elizabeth.  Elizabeth wife of William was buried on 20 May 1783 in West Grinstead.  William may have been buried there on 19 May 1785.  Then on 28 July 1803, Mary wife of William was buried in West Grinstead.  Was this the William who died aged 80 in 1816?  If so was he the one who was born in 1735 and married a Mary rather than Ann Matthews?  Or was Mary wrongly recorded for Ann?)

Ann was baptised on 29 July 1739 in Nuthurst and was the daughter of Samuel Matthew (1717-?) and Sarah Pronger (c1720-?).

William and Ann had 5 known children:

    1. John Mansbridge was baptised on 12 February 1761 in Cowfold.

    2. Lydia Mansbridge was baptised on 26 December 1761 in Cowfold and buried there on 27 January 1762.

    3. William Mansbridge was baptised on 31 October 1762 in Cowfold.

William may have married Sarah Clear by licence on 14 July 1792 in Wiston, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was dated 13 July 1792 and issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester.  It stated that William was 25 years and upwards and a bachelor of Washington.  Sarah was aged 29 and upwards and a spinster of Wiston.  Surety for the licence was provided by William himself and John Baker a farmer of Wiston.

William and Sarah had the following children:

      1. Matthew Mansbridge was baptised on 20 October 1793 in West Grinstead.

      2. Mark Mansbridge was baptised on 11 September 1796 in West Grinstead.

      3. Luke Mansbridge was baptised on 17 June 1798 in West Grinstead.

      4. William Mansbridge was baptised on 1 June 1800 in West Grinstead.

    4. Lydia Mansbridge was baptised on 3 June 1764 in Cowfold.

Lydia married James Martin by banns on 28 April 1791 in Cowfold.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Sarah Savage and Walter Hills.

    5. Mary Mansbridge was baptised on 22 February 1767 in Cowfold.

Mary married John Laker by banns on 9 April 1793 in West Grinstead.  She was then a spinster and he a widower.  They were both then of West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Coates and William Gratwick.

John may have previously married Sarah Illman by banns on 27 December 1783 in West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Laker and Richard Stiles.

  4. Ann Mansbridge was baptised on 9 September 1739 in Cowfold.  Ann was a witness to the marriage of Edward Brooker and Elizabeth Brooks on 16 May 1764 in West Grinstead.

Ann married James Coates by banns on 11 April 1765 in West Grinstead.  She was then a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were Edward Coates and James Stiles.

James and Ann had the following child:

    1. Richard Coates was baptised on 6 March 1768 in West Grinstead.
