James MANSBRIDGE (1759-1830)

and Mary FINCH (1768-1837)

 

James Mansbridge and Mary Finch were my 4x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 12 October 1788 at the parish church in Cowfold, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Mansbridge and Walter Hills.

James Mansbridge was baptised on 15 February 1759 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the second child and eldest son of John Mansbridge (1729-1807) and Ann Newman (1730-1807).  He died aged 71 years and was buried on 28 March 1830 in Cowfold.

Mary Finch was baptised on 10 July 1768 in Slaugham, Sussex.  She was the second child and daughter of William Finch (1740-1821) and Sarah Stedman (1739-1803).  She died aged 68 years was buried on 7 February 1837 in Cowfold.

 

James Mansbridge and Mary Finch had 10 known children:

  1. James Mansbridge was baptised on 23 January 1789 in Cowfold and buried there on 18 February 1789.  He was a twin.

  2. John Mansbridge was baptised on 23 January 1789 in Cowfold and buried there on 18 February 1789.  He was a twin.

  3. Mary Mansbridge was baptised on 17 April 1790 in Cowfold.

    Mary married Thomas Lewry by banns on 8 August 1809 in Bolney, Sussex.  They were both of Bolney and both made their marks.  The witnesses were James Mansbridge (marked) and Elizabeth Lewry (signed). 

    Thomas Lewry was born about 1788 and in Bolney according to the 1851 census, but no possible baptism has been found for him in the Bolney parish registers.  He may have been the son of William Lewry and Elizabeth Holman, who were buried alongside Thomas and Mary.

    When the 1841 census was record the family were living at Muttons Corner in Bolney and Thomas was then a higgler.  Next door at that time was the wife and family of Mary's brother Stephen Mansbridge.  Thomas and Mary were still at Muttons Corner in 1851 and Thomas was a poulterer.

    Thomas and Mary had 8 known children:

    1. William Lewry was baptised on 15 October 1810 in Bolney.  His parents were then named as Thomas and Mary Field or Lewry.

    2. Mary Lewry was baptised on 21 July 1816 in Bolney.  Her father was a labourer when she was baptised.

    3. Henry Lewry was baptised on 21 January 1821 in Bolney and his father was then a huckster.

      Henry married Sarah Lindfield on 30 September 1843 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.

      Sarah was born in 1825 in Cowfold and died in 1879.

      In 1851 Henry was a 30 year old poulterer living at Millcroft Cottage in Bolney, along with 27 year old wife Sarah and children.  By 1861 he was a higgler and the family were living at Cross Post in Bolney.

      Henry and Sarah had 10 known children:

      1. Louis Lewry was born about 1846 in Bolney.  He was not living with his parents when the 1851 census was recorded.  In 1861 he was a 15 year old living in the parental home.

        Louis married twice, firstly to Annie Field.

        Annie was born in 1846 in Bolney and died in 1875 in Cuckfield.

        Louis and Annie had 2 known children:

        1. Sarah Elizabeth Lewry was born about 1869 in Bolney.

        2. Emily Annie Lewry was born about 1870 in Bolney.

        Louis next married Sarah Mitchell in 1877 in Cuckfield.

        Sarah was born in 1855 in Cowfold.

        Louis and Sarah had 4 known children:

        1. Harry E. Lewry was born in 1879 in Twineham.

        2. Mary A. Lewry was born in 1880 in Cowfold

        3. Agnes E. Lewry was born in 1888 in Lower Beeding.

        4. Louis William Lewry was born in 1889 in Cowfold.  He died on 7 December 1963.

          Louis married twice, firstly to Kate Dewdney in 1909 in Steyning.

          Kate was born on 3 April 1885 in Henfield and was the daughter of George Dewdney and Catherine Coles.

          Louis next married his sister-in-law Mabel Hillman on 9 February 1957.  Mabel was a widow and as Mabel Dewdney had married Charles Hillman in 1915.

          Mabel was born on 24 February 1889 in Henfield.  She died on 14 January 1972.

      2. Albert Lewry was born about 1847 in Bolney.  He was 14 years old in 1861.  In 1901 he was a 54 year old bricklayer living in Bolney.

      3. Mary Lewry was born about 1848 in Bolney.  In 1861 she was a 13 year old scholar.

      4. Thomas Lewry was born about 1850 in Bolney.  He was an 11 year old scholar in 1861.

      5. Martha Lewry was born about 1852 in Bolney.  She was a 9 year old scholar in 1861.

      6. David Lewry was born about 1855 in Bolney.  He was a 6 year old scholar in 1861.

      7. Edward George Lewry was born about 1853 in Bolney (first quarter).  He died on 21 August 1926 in Fareham.  He was an 8 year old scholar in 1861.  Edward married Hannah Packham in 1875 in Cuckfield.  Hannah was baptised on 11 June 1848 in Bolney and was the daughter of William Packham and Mary.  At the time of the 1881 census the family were living at Sunnyside Cottage in Bletchingley, Surrey.  When the 1901 census was recorded he was a 48 year old cowman on a farm living at Farefild Cote in Fareham, Hampshire.  Edward and Hannah had the following children:

        1. Luther Lewry was born in 1876 in Shermanbury (third quarter).  He was 4 years old when the 1881 census was recorded.  In 1901 he was serving on HMS Trafalgar as a stoker.

        2. Martin Lewry was born in 1877 in Bolney (fourth quarter).  He was 3 years old in 1881.  He died in 1883 in Godstone, Surrey (first quarter).

        3. Ruth Lewry was born in 1879 in Bolney.  She was 2 years old in 1881 and 22 years old when the 1901 census was recorded.

        4. Edward Lewry was born in 1880 in Cowfold (fourth quarter).  He was 6 months old in 1881.  In 1901 he was a 20 year old grocer's assistant living at home.

        5. Edgar Lewry was born on 19 January 1883.

      8. Annie Lewry was born about 1857 in Bolney.  She was 4 years old in 1861.

      9. Andrew Lewry was baptised on 15 March 1859 in Bolney.  At the time the family were from Cross Posts, Bolney and his farther was a higgler.

      10. Warden Lewry was born in the first quarter of 1861 in Bolney.  He was 2 months old when the 1861 census was recorded.

      11. Henry Lewry was born in 1867 in Cowfold.

    4. Edward Lewry was baptised on 16 March 1823 in Bolney.

    5. Elizabeth Lewry was baptised on 10 April 1825 in Bolney.  In 1841 she was a 15 year living with her parents.  She married Edward Walder by banns on 19 December 1846 in Bolney.  They were both single.  Edward was then a labourer and named his father as Samuel Walder, a labourer.  The witnesses to the marriage were Matilda Lewry and Henry Day.

    6. Matilda Lewry was baptised on 8 April 1827 in Bolney.  She was not with her parents and siblings when the 1841 census was recorded.

    7. Harriet Lewry was born on 20 January 1829 and baptised on 29 March 1829 in Bolney.  She was buried on 19 May 1870 in Bolney.  In 1841 she was a 12 year old and in 1851 a 22 year old and each time she was living with her parents.  Harriet married Thomas Walder by banns on 5 June 1852 in Bolney.  They were both single.  He was then a poulterer from Nye's Hill in Bolney and she was from Muttons Corner in Bolney.  The witnesses were Harriet Lewry and Edward Lewry.  He was born in 1829 and died on 30 October 1908.  He was the son of Thomas Standen Walder (1789-1862) and Catherine Nicholas (1791-1850).  (Thomas Standen Walder's sister, Sarah Walder married William Mansbridge, uncle of Harriet Lewry.)  Thomas and Harriet had 8 known children:

      1. Arthur Walder was born about 1855 in Bolney.  He was a 6 year old in 1861 and living with his parents.

      2. James Walder was born about 1858 in Bolney.  He was 3 years old in 1861.

      3. Mercy Walder was born about 1859 in Bolney.  She was 2 years old in 1861.  She married Thomas Knight on 20 January 1881 in Brighton.

      4. Edwin Walder was born about 1861 in Bolney and was 2 months old when the 1861 census was recorded.  He married Emma before or about 1884.  They had 6 known children.

      5. Joseph Walder was born about 1864 in Bolney.

      6. Ernest Walder was born about 1866 in Bolney.

      7. John Walder was born on 13 January 1869 in Bolney.  (He was Pam Harris's Great Grandfather.)  He emigrated to Australia in 1890, firstly to Victoria and then on to New South Wales.  He married Marianne Donaldson in 1892 in Sydney.  They had 10 children, including Pam's Grandmother Helen Walder (known as Nellie).

      8. Mary Elizabeth Walder was born about 1870.

      When the 1861 census was recorded the family were living at Nyes Hill in Bolney and Thomas was then a Poulterer.

    8. Joseph Lewry was born about 1837 in Bolney.  He died in 1911.  He was a 4 year old in 1841 living with his parents.  By 1851 he was a 14 year old and living with his parents.  He married Emma Etheridge in the first quarter of 1866.  She was born about 1845 in Bolney or Henfield, Sussex.  Emma died in about 1936 and was buried with her husband at the Providence Chapel in Bolney.  The property at Muttons Corner was inherited by Joseph and was sold around about the time Emma died.  The family were living at Muttons Corner when the 1881 census was recorded.  Joseph and Emma had 7 known children:

      1. Edward Lewry was born about 1867 in Bolney.  At the time of the 1881 census he was 14 years old.  When the 1901 census was recorded he was a 34 year old Under Gamekeeper living in Glynde, Sussex along with his 25 year old wife Alice who had been born in Brighton.

      2. James H Lewry was born about 1869 in Bolney.  He was a 12 year old scholar when the 1881 census was recorded.

      3. Henry Lewry

      4. Thomas Warden Lewry was born about 1873 in Bolney (first quarter).  He was an 8 year old scholar in 1881.  When the 1901 census was recorded he was 28 and the only child living at home with his parents.  He married in the fourth quarter of 1903 in the Steyning registration district.

      5. Mary Elizabeth Lewry was born about 1876 in Bolney (first quarter).  She was 5 in 1881.

      6. Lois Lewry was born in 1878 in Bolney (second quarter).  She was 3 in 1881.

      7. William Ralph Lewry was born in 1883 in Bolney (second quarter).

    Did Thomas and Mary also have a son named Thomas born about 1814 in Bolney?  When the 1861 census was recorded there was a 47 year old Thomas Lewry, wife Ann aged 44 and 7 children living in Bolney at what looks like Shonkett Wood.  Thomas was then a dealer in fowls.  Thomas Lewry married Anna Peacock on 17 September 1836 in Bolney.

  1. William Mansbridge was baptised on 10 June 1792 in Cowfold.  He married Sarah Walder in 1817.  (They have their own page.)

  2. James Mansbridge was baptised on 17 July 1796 in Cowfold.  He died in 1870.  He married Sarah Bartley.  James and Sarah had 1 known son:

    1. Frederick Mansbridge was baptised on 24 April 1844 at the Chapel Royal in Brighton.

  3. Thomas Mansbridge was baptised on 20 April 1799 in Cowfold.  He married Eliza Anscombe in 1832 in Bolney.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Stephen Mansbridge was baptised on 20 June 1802 in Bolney.  He married Ann Baker in 1824.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Michael William Mansbridge was born about 1804 and died in 1875 in Ayr, Scotland.  He was a butler at Sundrum Castle near Ayr.  He married twice, firstly to Lucy Louisa Ward and they had 3 known children:

    1. Louis Henry Mansbridge

    2. James Louis Mansbridge was born in 1834.  He married Margaret Griffin.  They had 1 known son:

      1. William Owen Mansbridge (Was he born on 13 January 1872?  And did he emigrate to Australia where he eventually became a Colonel in the Australian Army?)

    3. Francis Michael Mansbridge was born on 23 October 1836 and baptised on 22 June 1837 at St. Anne Soho, Westminster, London.  He married Elizabeth Barbour on 2 October 1857 in Ayr.  They had 8 known children:

      1. Elizabeth McKail Mansbridge was born on 9 October 1859 in Ayr.

      2. Frances Mansbridge was born on 27 November 1862 in Ayr.

      3. Louisa Ward Mansbridge was born 21 March 1864 in Dumbarton.

      4. Andrew Barbour Mansbridge was born on 17 October 1865 in Dumbarton.

      5. Isabella Mansbridge was born on 8 February 1868 in Dumbarton.

      6. Harriet Mansbridge was born on 17 May 1870 in Dumbarton.

      7. William Mansbridge was born on 5 November 1871 in Dumbarton.

      8. Jane Mansbridge was born on 23 Febrauary 1874 in Dumbarton.

    Michael then married Elizabeth McCormick on 12 November 1848 in Ayr.  They had 8 known children:

    1. Thomas Tam Mansbridge was born on 1 December 1850 in Ayr.  He married Mary Cree.  Thomas and Mary were buried in the Wallacetown Cemetery in Ayr.  They had the following children:

      1. James Cree Mansbridge married May Meadows.

      2. Lizzie Mansbridge

      3. Jennifer Mansbridge

      4. Frances Mansbridge

      5. Harry Mansbridge

      6. William Mansbridge was born on 10 May 1884 in Ayr.

      7. Emma Mansbridge

      8. Louis Mansbridge

      9. Louis Henry Mansbridge

    2. Annie Mansbridge

    3. James C Mansbridge

    4. Agnes Mansbridge

    5. Janet Mansbridge was born on 24 February 1855 in Coyton, Ayr.

    6. William Mansbridge was born on 16 April 1857 in Coylton, Ayr.

    7. John Mansbridge was born on 10 June 1863 in Largs, Ayr.

    8. David Mansbridge was born on 12 April 1869 in Ayr.

  6. Henry Mansbridge was born on 7 November 1806 and baptised on 7 December 1806 in Bolney.  His parents were then named as James and Sarah, although I think his mother's name was wrongly recorded.  In Bolney on 26 March 1826 he was most probably the Henry Mansbridge witness to the marriage of Elizabeth Mansbridge, his sister.  Henry died in 1866.

    Henry married Jane Mitchell by banns on 4 June 1831 in Worth, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Worth.  The witnesses were William Howard and Elizabeth Howard.  The couple had 4 known children:

    1. George Mansbridge was baptised on 24 September 1831 in Cowfold.

    2. Peter Mansbridge was born on 9 December 1833 and baptised on 9 February 1834 in Henfield.  He died aged 54 years in the first quarter of 1889 in the Dewsbury registration district.  Peter married Ann Williams on 12 July 1857 at Old Church, St. Pancras, London.  She was born about 1832 in Watford, Hertfordshire.  Ann may have died aged 78 years in the second quarter of 1908 in the Dewsbury district.  When the 1871 census was recored the family were living in South Mimms, Middlesex and Peter was a signalman.  By the time of the 1881 census the family were living in Leeds Road in Gomersal, Yorkshire, where Peter was the station master.  The couple had 6 known children:

      1. George Henry Mansbridge was baptised on 30 January 1859 in Bushey, Hertfordshire.  He was 12 years old when the 1871 census was recorded.  George married Eliza White in the third quarter of 1885 in the Horncastle registration district.  They had 3 daughters baptised in Bardney, Lincolnshire:  Martha Mansbridge (1885-1886), Mary Mansbridge (1885-?) who was living with her Uncle Frederick in 1891 and 1901, and Annie Mansbridge (1887-1888).

      2. Frederick Mansbridge was baptised on 6 January 1861 in Little Wymondley, Hertfordshire.  His birth was registered in the fourth quarter of 1860.  He was a 10 year old in 1871.  He married Sarah Gardner on 6 April 1886 in Bushey, Hertfordshire.  She was baptised on 29 October 1854 in Chorley Wood, Hertfordshire and was the daughter of Charles Gardner and Ann Stevens.  Sarah died in 1898 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.  When the 1891 census was recorded the couple together with their 11 month old daughter Annie Mansbridge (born Boxmoor, Hertfordshire) and 5 year old niece Mary Mansbridge (born Bardney, Lincolnshire) were living in Hemel Hempstead, where Frederick was a baker.  Frederick was still a Baker when the 1901 census was recorded and living in Hemel Hempsted with his 10 year old daughter and 15 year old niece.

      3. Horace Mansbridge was baptised on 14 June 1863 in Little Wymondley.  He was an 18 year old Plater Layer living with his parents when the 1881 census was recorded.  Horace married Mary Ann Hall in the second quarter of 1896 in the Dewsbury district.  When the 1901 census was recorded the couple were living in Drighlington, Yorkshire and Horace was a railway plate layer.  By 1901 they had 4 children:  Horace (7), Percy (5), Ann (4) and Clarence (2).  Mary Ann was born about 1869 in Batley, Yorkshire.

      4. Fanny Mansbridge was baptised on 12 March 1865 in Little Wymondley.  She was a 16 year old Worsted Weaver in 1881 and her name was then recorded in the census as Jenny Mansbridge.

      5. Mark Anthony Mansbridge was born about 1867 in Middlesex.  He was working as a 14 year old factory hand when the 1881 census was recorded.

      6. Frank Mansbridge was born about 1871 in Middlesex.  In 1881 he was a 10 year old scholar.

    3. Harriet Mansbridge was baptised on 23 July 1837 in Slaugham, Sussex.

    4. Walter Mansbridge was baptised on 20 October 1839 in Slaugham.

  7. Elizabeth Mansbridge, my 3x Great Grandmother, was born on 27 November 1808 and baptised on 18 February 1810 in Bolney.  She married John Dowlen (1802-1875) in 1826.  (They have their own page.)
