The
MABB Family of Sussex

So far, I do not have any known Mabb ancestors of my own.
In early December 2003 I received an
email from Denise about Sarah Mabb who married Thomas Baldock
on 2 April 1761 in Wadhurst, Sussex. Sarah may have been born about 1740 and
have been buried on 29 November 1768 in Wadhurst. (Also see my
BALDOCK section.)
In my own family tree,
Thomas Barham
(1748-1808) - son of my 6x Great Grandfather
Nicholas Barham
(1721-1790) - married
Elizabeth Mabb on 22 April 1772 in Wadhurst.
QUESTION: When and where
were Sarah and Elizabeth born/baptised, and were they related?
ANSWER: Probably not
sisters, but maybe cousins or a link even further back.
The East Sussex Baptism Index records
just one possible Sarah Mabb and two Elizabeth Mabb's all baptised in
Wadhurst:
At some point I will check the original
registers and try and work out what became of Sarah and which of the two
Elizabeth's married Thomas Barham. My guess at the moment is
that 1747 Elizabeth married Thomas, as they named a son Edward.
A search of the web came up with the
following database on the RootsWeb/Ancestry site:
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1692572&id=I76799840
which records that 1730 Sarah was the daughter of
Jacob Mabbe and Judith Walters. Again, at some point, I
will look at the original registers to confirm whether Sarah's father was
Jacob or John. A marriage licence for Jacob Mabb of Wadhurst
and Judith Watches was issued on 19 August 1726.
The IGI also records that a Sarah Mabs was baptised in June 1734 in
Donnington, Sussex. She was the daughter of Mark Mabs and
Elizabeth Lockyer, who had married on 13 January 1733 in Donnington.
Mark Mabbs had been baptised on 13 January 1701 in Bosham, Sussex and
was the son of Thomas Mabbs and Elizabeth. Is it
possible that this Sarah moved to Wadhurst and married Thomas
Baldock? Or did she marry John Hooke on 13 September 1756
in Selsey, Sussex?
Another distant Mabb link, is that a
Ruth Mabb
married
Reuben Weeks in 1868. He was the son of
William Weeks (1804-1879) and his second wife Caroline.
