John LONGLEY (c1685-?)

and Elizabeth WHATT (c1690-?)

John Longley and Elizabeth Whatt may have been my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by licence on 27 June 1710 at St. Clements in Hastings, Sussex.  Another John Longley married Mary Wimbell by banns on 8 March 1697/8 in Battle, Sussex.

John Longley's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He may have been buried on 21 November 1716 in Battle, Sussex.  The burial register noted John was a farmer.  Or was he buried on 19 November 1719 in Battle?  Was he the son of John Longley of Battle and Mary Blake, widow who had married on 9 October 1687 at St. Clements in Hastings?  Or might he have been the son of Richard Longley and Mary Marden who married on 14 September 1686 in Battle?  Or maybe of Herbert Longley of Sheffield and Mary Kennard of Warbleton who married on 27 April 1680 in Battle?  Or of Thomas Longly of Beckley and Jane who married on 6 January 1670/1 in Battle?

Elizabeth Whatt may have been baptised on 4 November 1686 at All Saints, Hastings, and have been the daughter of Richard Watts.  He may have married Elizabeth on 5 June 1673 in Hollington, Sussex, at which time he was of Hastings.  An Elizabeth Longley was buried on 11 June 1784 in Battle, the burial register only records her name and nothing to help identify which Elizabeth was buried.

If John died in 1716, might she as Elizabeth Longley have married Thomas Shether by licence on 18 January 1719/20 in Battle?  She was then of Battle and he of Ewhurst, Sussex.  And might Thomas have been baptised on 28 March 1676 in Ewhurst and have been the son of Henry Sheather and Elizabeth Darbie?  An Elizabeth Sheather was buried on 21 October 1742 in Ewhurst, but also at that time in Ewhurst there was an Elizabeth wife of Abraham Sheather.  Abraham was buried on 15 October 1749 and Thomas on 6 July 1750, both in Ewhurst.

Mary Longley, widow was buried on 4 January 1737 in Battle.  (I am assuming she was Mary Wimbell, but was her husband John buried in 1716 or 1719?)

John Longley and Elizabeth Whatt had 4 known children:

  1. Mary Longley was baptised on 11 February 1710/11 in Battle.

  2. Elizabeth Longley, my 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 5 April 1712 in Battle.  The baptism register noted her father was a farmer.  She married 5 156 John Fuller in 1736.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Hannah Longley was baptised on 18 April 1714 in Battle.  The baptism register noted her father was a farmer.

  4. Thomas Longley was baptised on 15 January 1715/6 in Battle.  The baptism register noted his father was a farmer.  Was he buried on 12 February 1729 in Battle or did he marry Mary Wickham by licence on 12 December 1739 in Battle?  They were both then of Battle.

John Longley and Mary Wimbell had 1 known child:

  1. Deborah Longley was baptised on 1 April 1699 in Battle.  The baptism register noted the names of both her parents and that her father was a joiner.

Thomas Sheather and Elizabeth had 2 known sons:

  1. Henry Sheather was baptised on 6 November 1720 in Ewhurst and buried there on 17 July 1721.

  2. Henery Sheather alias Stace was baptised on 19 February 1721/2 in Ewhurst.
