John LONGLEY (c1570-1639)

and Elizabeth BALCOMBE (c1575-1622)

John Longley and Elizabeth Balcombe may have been my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by licence on 3 March 1616/7 in Balcombe, Sussex.  She was then describe as Elizabeth, widow of Richard Balcombe.  John and Elizabeth's marriage licence was issued on 15 February 1616/7 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which recorded that he was a yeoman and they were both of Balcombe.  John may have married again to Margery Holman by licence on 13 April 1631 at St. Anne's in Lewes, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on the same day and recorded that John was a yeoman and Margery a widow and they were both of Horsted Keynes, Sussex.  Richard Balcombe married Elizabeth Balcombe on 25 November 1595 in Balcombe.

John Longley's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was buried on 22 October 1639 in Balcombe.  John left a will dated 22 October 1639 and proved on 23 November 1639.  In his will he mentioned, son George Longley, daughter Margaret wife of John Turner, 3 grandchildren, Mary, Margaret and John Turner, daughter Jane Longley, cousin John Burte, kinsman William Longly, kinsman John Luxford, cousin John Comber, son William Longley was was appointed sole executor, brother in law John Rapper and John Killingbecke were appointed overseers.

Elizabeth Balcombe may have been baptised on 21 June 1574 in Balcombe, the daughter of Edward Balcombe.  But it would seem her first husband may also have the child of Edward.  She may have been buried on 14 September 1622 in Horsted Keynes.  The burial register just records her name as Elizabeth Longlie.

The Horsted Keynes burial register records that Elnor wife of John Longlye was buried on 10 March 1623/4.

Margery's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

John Longley and wives had 5 known children:

  1. John Longley was baptised on 24 December 1598 in Ardingly.

  2. William Longely was baptised on 27 February 1601/2 in Ardingly.  He was appointed the sole executor of his father's will.

  3. Margeret Longley was baptised on 27 February 1601/2 in Ardingly.

Margaret married John Turner by licence on 22 December 1629 in Horsted Keynes.  Their marriage licence was issued on 17 December 1629 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which recorded that she was a spinster and he a gent and they were both of Horsted Keynes. She was mentioned in her father's will, although lines mentioning her were crossed out.

John and Margaret had the following children:

    1. John Turner was baptised 15 September 1630 in Horsted Keynes and probably died young.

    2. Mary Turner

    3. Margaret Turner was baptised on 19 January 1633/4 in Horsted Keynes.

    4. John Turner was baptised on 14 December 1636 in Horsted Keynes.

    5. Jane Turner was baptised on 26 December 1640 in Horsted Keynes.

    6. Sarah Turner was baptised on 28 December 1643 in Horsted Keynes.

  4. George Longley was baptised on 18 March 1603/4in Balcombe.  He was mentioned in his father's will and left a legacy of 40.

  5. Jane Longley was baptised on 14 January 1620/1 in Horsted Keynes.  She married George Box in 1642.  (They have their own page.)

John Longley and Margery had 2 known children:

  1. Anne Longley was baptised on 13 February 1631/2 in Horsted Keynes.

  2. John Longley was baptised on 18 December 1633 in Horsted Keynes.

Richard Balcombe was a churchwarden of Balcombe in 1614.  He may have been baptised on 28 February 1569/70 in Balcombe, the son of Edward Balcombe.  However, his wife may also have been the daughter of Edward!  So one of them wasn't the child of Edward.  Richard may have been buried on 19 September 1615 in Balcombe, at which time he was of Skannams.

Richard Balcombe and Elizabeth Balcombe had 5 known children:

  1. Joane Balcombe was baptised on 1 January 1597/8 in Balcombe.

  2. Edward Balcombe was baptised on 1 January 1601/2 in Balcombe.

  3. Richard Balcombe was baptised on 1 June 1603 in Balcombe.

  4. Elizabeth Bawlcom was baptised on 2 September 1606 in Balcombe.

  5. Katheryne Bawlcombe was baptised on 29 March 1612 in Balcombe.

I'm not sure if the following was the same John as above.

John Longley had the following child:

  1. George Longley was baptised on 8 March 1603/4 in Balcombe.
