William LONGHURST (c1670-?)

and Sarah YOUNG (c1675-?)

William Longhurst and Sarah Young may have been my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 19 October 1697 at the parish church of St. Nicholas in Charlwood, Surrey.  William was then of Horsham, Sussex.

William Longhurst's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Although he had 3 children baptised in Horsham, his baptism was not recorded in the Horsham parish registers, nor was his burial.  William was a weaver.  Might he have been baptised on 27 February 1671/2 in Ewhurst, Surrey and have been the son of Joseph Longhurst and Margaret Sture?  They married there on 20 September 1670.  Ewhurst is on the Surrey/Sussex border and near to Charlwood, which is also on the border.  However, the IGI records that that William was buried on 2 January 1694.  I believe his daughter Ann married and settled in Billinghurst, Sussex, but William was not baptised or buried there either.  Might William have had a brother named George Longhurst?  And might they have been the sons of a William Longhurst who was born in Rusper, Sussex in 1647?  Might William have been buried on 13 May 1705 in Ockley, Surrey, although there was a William Longhurst baptised there in August 1704.

Sarah Young's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Her baptism was not recorded in the Horsham parish registers.  A Sarah Longhurst, widow was buried on 18 September 1763 in Horsham, but she may have been the widow of Edward Longhurst.

William Longhurst and Sarah Young had 3 or 4 known children:

  1. William Longhurst was stillborn and was buried on 14 August 1698 in Horsham.  Only his father's name was recorded in the burial register, so I can't be certain he was part of this family.

  2. Sarah Longhurst was baptised on 28 January 1699/1700 in Horsham.  The baptism register recorded that her parents were William and Sarah.

  3. Ann Longhurst may have been my 6x Great Grandmother.  She was baptised on 7 March 1700/1 in Horsham, Sussex and married Jeremiah Oulder in 1727.  (They have their own page.)  The baptism register recorded that her parents were William and Sarah and that her father was a weaver.

  4. George Longhurst was baptised on 18 August 1704 in Horsham.  The baptism register records that he was the son of William and Ann and that his father was a weaver.

A William Longhurst was buried on 18 November 1733 in Horsham.  The burial register noted that he was a young man.
