Charles LIDBETTER (1807-1860)

and Mary ADFIELD (c1820-?)

Charles Libbeter and Mary Adfield married by banns on 5 October 1844 in Pulborough, Sussex.  He was then a 38 year old bachelor and labourer and she was a 24 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as John Libbeter and John Adfield who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Francis Libbeter and Mary Anne Libbeter.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Charles Lidbetter was baptised on 1 March 1807 in Pulborough, Sussex.  He was the son of John Lidbetter (1771-1848) and Maria Wady (1777-1819).  Charles died aged 53 years and was buried on 30 June 1860 in Pulborough.  In 1841 he was said to be a 35 year old agricultural labourer and he was living with the family of his brother William at Barn House, Pulborough.

Mary Adfield was born about 1820/1 in Wiggonholt, Sussex.  She was most probably the daughter of John Adfield and Elizabeth Harwood, who had married on 15 October 1821 in Wiggonholt.

As Mary Lidbetter, widow, she married George Hayler, widower, by banns on 24 December 1864 in Pulborough.  George was then a labourer.  Their fathers were named as James Hayler and John Adfield and they were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Charles Hayler and Mary Ann Holden.

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living in Pulborough along with their 2 children and Mary's widowed mother, 68 year old Elizabeth Adfield, who was born in Wiggonholt.

Charles Lidbetter and Mary Adfield had 8 known children:

  1. John Libbeter was baptised on 22 June 1845 in Pulborough and buried there as an infant on 17 September 1845.

  2. Charles Lidbetter was baptised on 15 November 1846 in Pulborough.  He was 4 years old when the 1851 census was recorded.  Charles married Jane Brockhurst in 1866 in Pulborough.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Mary Jane Lidbetter was baptised on 21 January 1849 in Pulborough and buried there as an infant on 6 October 1849.

  4. William Lidbetter was baptised on 13 October 1850 in Pulborough.  He was 7 months old when the 1851 census was recorded.

  5. Harriet Lidbetter was baptised on 17 April 1853 in Pulborough.

  6. James Lidbetter was baptised on 9 September 1855 in Pulborough.

  7. Ellen Lidbetter was baptised on 13 October 1857 in Pulborough.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer from Marehill.

  8. Caroline Lidbetter was baptised on 8 April 1860 in Pulborough.
